Notes: Abstract The complete description of two-wave interaction in photorefractive crystals involves two sets of differential equations: the materials equations and the field equations, although, when calculating the transients, the field equations are often omitted. The accuracy of these approximations is studied by calculating numerically the diffraction efficiency from both the exact and approximate equations for a set of coupling coefficients. It is shown that for large coupling, the discrepancy may be quite large. In particular, the time required for erasure will substantially increase when beam coupling is taken into account.

Notes: Abstract The emergence of higher diffracted orders when a slightly wedged BSO crystal is illuminated by a single coherent beam is studied with input power and applied voltage as parameters. It is shown that the power spreads gradually towards the higher orders and that the temporal variation of the power in each beam is qualitatively the same as in the case of two-wave interaction.

Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional vector velocimeter is proposed on the basis of the time-varying spatial filtering method using a rotating disk with two transmission gratings. The filtering characteristics of the spatial filter used in the velocimeter were studied theoretically. A preliminary experiment was performed to measure the velocity vector of a rotating random pattern. The experimental results show the usefulness of the present velocimeter for measurements of the velocity.

Notes: Abstract We present a simple analytical method to study birefringence and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of graded-core stress-applied polarization-maintaining fibers. It is based on the equivalent step-index-fiber method. It is shown that the agreement between present results and the results obtained using the finite-element method is very good. Polarization characteristics of stress-applied polarization-maintaining fibers having a dip in the refractive index at the center of the core are also investigated.

Notes: Abstract We present an experimental technique for measuring small product yield increments in a specially designed time-of-flight mass spectrometer with a supersonic jet. Advantages of this technique are demonstrated in measuring the photodissociation IR spectrum (990–1050 cm−1) of CF3I molecules with vibrational energy at the threshold value. The differential technique has enabled us to reveal an anomalously narrow width of the $$\tilde v_1$$ spike of thev 1 band of CF3I. We discuss this anomaly.

Notes: Abstract Mechanical forces can be measured over a range of 6 decades by applying the photoelastic effect inside the laser cavity. Our experiments with a modular test setup (633nm) demonstrate proportional force-to-frequency conversion from 1·10−4N up to 80N with the noise equivalent resolution of 3·10−5N. The frequency response of our test setup was established from dc up to some kilohertz. Measurement range and resolution can be extended to 10−6N or smaller values by applying improved laser stabilization and miniaturizing cavity length and size of photoelastic material. The upper limit of the scale factor is calculated to be of the order of 25MHz/N.

Notes: Abstract Pyroelectric detection of a CO2 laser beam has been investigated by using organic copolymers such as VDF/TrFE- and VDCN/VAc copolymers, and compared with that of PVDF polymer. The voltage responsitiviesR v are 40 mV/W for VDF/TrFE and 2 mV/W for VDCN/VAc at room temperature and at a chopping frequency of 200 Hz. (For comparison, the value of PVDF is 20 mV/W.) From the frequency dependence of the detected output, the electric time constant τE is evaluated to be about 6.4 ms and 2.6 ms for the former and latter copolymers with the detection area 3×3 mm2, respectively. Some theoretical discussion is also given of the responsivity, frequency dependence and temperature dependence obtained.

Notes: Abstract In the system (poly-(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK): trinitrofluorenone (TNF) a photoconductive complex is formed. Thin metal films are sputtered on BK7 glass substrates, forming two electrodes with 1 mm separation. The photoconductive complex is deposited from a solution in chlorobenzene/tetrahydrofurane on the glass substrate between the electrodes, forming a photoconductive detector. Photoconductivity of these planar detectors is studied using He-Ne laser light (λ=633 nm) as a function of electric field and for different TNF concentrations. An increase of photosensitivity is found for high TNF concentrations. Time resolution of the photoconductive PVK:TNF detector is investigated using a ruby pulse laser (λ=694 nm). The possible use of such detectors in combination with other polymer lightguides is demonstrated. Compared to most polymer waveguide materials PVK exhibits a rather high refractive index ofn=1.7. Thus the coupling of light into the photoconductive film is achieved directly. The planar structure allows further integration of polymeric components for optoelectronics.

Notes: Abstract Our current work on a vacuolar membrane proton ATPase in the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae has revealed that it is a third type of H+-translocating ATPase in the organism. A three-subunit ATPase, which has been purified to near homogeneity from vacuolar membrane vesicles, shares with the native, membrane-bound enzyme common enzymological properties of substrate specificities and inhibitor sensitivities and are clearly distinct from two established types of proton ATPase, the mitochondrial F0F1-type ATP synthase and the plasma membrane E1E2-type H+-ATPase. The vacuolar membrane H+-ATPase is composed of three major subunits, subunita (M r =67 kDa),b (57kDa), andc (20 kDa). Subunita is the catalytic site and subunitc functions as a channel for proton translocation in the enzyme complex. The function of subunitb has not yet been identified. The functional molecular masses of the H+-ATPase under two kinetic conditions have been determined to be 0.9–1.1×105 daltons for single-cycle hydrolysis of ATP and 4.1–5.3×105 daltons for multicycle hydrolysis of ATP, respectively.N,N′-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide does not inhibit the former reaction but strongly inhibits the latter reaction. The kinetics of single-cycle hydrolysis of ATP indicates the formation of an enzyme-ATP complex and subsequent hydrolysis of the bound ATP to ADP and Pi at a 7-chloro-4-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazolesensitive catalytic site. Cloning of structural genes for the three subunits of the H+-ATPase (VMA1, VMA2, andVMA3) and their nucleotide sequence determination have been accomplished, which provide greater advantages for molecular biological studies on the structure-function relationship and biogenesis of the enzyme complex. Bioenergetic aspects of the vacuole as a main, acidic compartment ensuring ionic homeostasis in the cytosol have been described.

Notes: Abstract The fungal plasma membrane contains a proton-translocating ATPase that is closely related, both structurally and functionally, to the [Na+, K+]-, [H+, K+]-, and [Ca2+]-ATPases of animal cells, the plasma-membrane [H+]-ATPase of higher plants, and several bacterial cation-transporting ATPases. This review summarizes currently available information on the molecular genetics, protein structure, and reaction cycle of the fungal enzyme. Recent efforts to dissect structure-function relationships are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract An approach to CARS, with considerable potential as a diagnostic for advanced airbreathing propulsion devices, is described and demonstrated. The technique is capable of providing simultaneous measurements of the major constitutents in H2/air combustion. The method employs both broadband and narrowband Stokes beams to generate CARS via two, two-color and two, three-color wave mixing processes. Temperature and concentration information are simultaneously available from N2, H2, and H2O. This permits the disappearance of fuel and appearance of product to be monitored. An analysis of the technique's capabilities and future improvements are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of phase-modulation on femtosecond time-resolved coherent Raman scattering is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The coherent Raman signal taken as a function of the spectral position shows unexpected temporal oscillations close to time zero. A theoretical analysis of the coherent Raman scattering process indicates that the femtosecond light pulses are amplitude and phase modulated. The pulses are asymmetric in time with more slowly decaying trailing wings. The phase of the pulse amplitude contains quadratic and higher-order contributions.

Notes: Abstract Partial differential equations are set up and solved partly analytically, partly numerically for the spatial and temporal variation of the amplitudes and phases of the four beams participating in four-wave mixing in a linear Passive Phase Conjugate Mirror. The instantaneous frequency of the resonating beam is also determined. It is shown that the duration and main features of the transient regime are determined not only by the properties of the photorefractive crystal but also by the external optical circuit, in particular by the quality factor and detuning of the resonator.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that power exchange is possible in photorefractive materials even though the grating produced by the two incident waves is in phase with their interference pattern. The reason is that the interaction of the principal waves will produced higher order waves and their presence will form further gratings which assist power transfer between the principle beams. Under favourable conditions significant amounts of power may be transferred.

Notes: Abstract Weakly guiding, anisotropic step-index fibers with an elliptical core are investigated for the case that the refractive index tensor is everywhere diagonalized along the axes of fibers. The mode field and its leaky-mode-loss expression are given together with some numerical results which show that the influence of ellipticity is small compared with the effect of fiber anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract We report the successful operation of a novel automatic impedance matching technique (AIMing) and observations of the opto-Hertzian effect. The AIMing system is capable of maintaining efficient RF power delivery to a CO2 waveguide laser over a wide range of operating conditions. The opto-Hertzian signal, produced by circulating laser power fluctuations and detected in the RF reflected power, has some interesting properties and may be used for laser frequency stabilisation.

Notes: Abstract New optogalvanic response relative time features, such as signal growth and decay speeds, are suggested. These criteria can characterize signal time response parameters, as well as determine which particular type of gas internal quantum process is dominant during a given stage of response development. The general theoretical concepts reported here are compared with experimental results which are based on resonant optogalvanic effects in neon discharges and on non-resonant optogalvanic signals in neon and argon prebreakdown discharges. These new time characteristics are conceptually pleasing and permit study of the influence of individual factors such as bias and incident laser irradiation on overall gas response.

Notes: Abstract The motivation for a digital optical computer is based on the shortcomings inherent in of electronic computers. Optics has solutions to offer especially in interconnects. Devices based on nonlinear optical effects are still in the early stages of their development. Hence at an intermediate stage hybrid opto-electronic computers might emerge. Their architectures should make use of the special attributes of optics. A specific approach called symbolic substitution logic is outlined.

Notes: Abstract The underlying physics of optical switching in bistable diode-laser amplifiers is reviewed. The importance of minimizing the switching energy of optical bistable devices is emphasized. It is shown that conventional diode-laser amplifiers are switched with only thousands of photons in less than a nanosecond. Recent developments in single quantumwell lasers allow switching with total energy (including electronic) less than a picojoule.

Notes: Abstract Room-temperature two-element latching circuits are experimentally demonstrated using GaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) nonlinear etalons under single-wavelength bistable operation. Signal power gains of up to 4 and contrast ratios of 10 have been achieved at milliwatt power levels with 1-μs pulses, which will allow the construction of more complicated digital optical circuits using diode lasers as the light sources. The problems of applying these nonlinear etalons to fast optical signal processing are also discussed. Numerical simulations show that the gain vanishes as the pulse duration decreases and approaches the carrier lifetime.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports and discusses, for the first time, the all-optical remote monitoring method for spilled dispersals or leakages in air of city gas through the nearinfrared absorption of CH4 gaseous molecules as one of its major constituents, using a very low-loss optical fiber network and compact absorption cells in conjunction with high radiant InGaAsP light-emitting diodes (LEDs). For this new application, the near-infrared absorption spectra of city gas (Sendai, Japan) were measured and analyzed to find a relatively strong absorption due to thev 2 + 2v 3 combination band of CH4 molecules around the wavelength region of 1.33 μm. By using a 2-km long very low-loss silica optical fiber link, this fully optical system was demonstrated to be feasible, safe and capble of achieving reproducibly the detection sensitivity of nearly 1 Torr of CH4 gas in air, i.e., 2.6% of the lower explosion limit of CH4 density in air. This result supports the conclusion that the alloptical remote sensing system incorporating very low-loss optical fiber networks and LEDs or laser diodes (LDs) in the near-infrared region can be extensively utilized for the real-time detection and surveillance of spills or leakages of the city gas or any other gas mixtures as well as various combustible, explosive, dangerous, and toxic gases not onlyin industrial and mining complexes but also in urban and residential areas.

Notes: Abstract The newly proposed anisotropic fiber structures with cylindrical polar principal axes appear to be an interesting novel class of special lightguides. In this paper, some interesting results relating to such fibers are derived which, to the knowledge of this author, have not yet been reported in the literature. It is found that, ifn φc0 (Δ φ )1/2〉n zc0(Δ r )1/2, TE01 will be the fundament mode with a range of single-mode operation given by 2.61n zc0 (2Δ r )1/2 λ/a〈2.61n φc0(2Δ φ )1/2. On the other hand, ifn zc0 (Δ r )1/2〉n φc0(Δ φ )1/2, then TM01 becomes the fundamental mode whose single-mode operation range is 2.61n φc0 (2Δ φ )1/2 λ/a〈2.61n zc0(2Δ r )1/2.

Notes: Abstract As one of the interesting optical techniques for measurements of the velocity, the spatial-filtering method is treated briefly in this review. The basic theory of the method is examined by analyzing the filtering characteristics of a spatial filter using the power spectral density function. The signal analyses are summarized as one of the techniques used in the spatial filtering method. Various configurations of the spatial filtering velocimeter are classified into typical four groups and outlined according to a variety of spatial filters employed in the velocimeters.

Notes: Abstract A new method to reconstruct smooth refractive-index profiles from measured effective indices is presented. The profile form near the surface and its approach towards the bulk value are explicitely taken into account. Well behaved profiles such as Gaussian or exponential can be reconstructed within experimental accuracy from three modes only, and even two modes may provide useful information. The method is tested for numerical stability.

Notes: Abstract Guided modes of a planar dielectric waveguide which encounter a nondiagonal permittivity tensor are neither TE nor TM, but hybrid. They are described by a pair of coupled second-order differential equations for the transversal electric and magnetic field components. We construct a real-valued function which plays the role of the transversal electric or magnetic field in the uncoupled Sturm-Liouville differential equation for TE or TM modes. The number of zeroes, or nodes, of this function labels the modes. The nodes increase with the prospective propagation constant. This fact is proven by constructing suitable self-adjoint operators and referring to the minimax principle. The nodal properties allow to formulate an efficient bisection algorithm for effective indices and field distributions of guided hybrid modes.

Notes: Abstract A new method is reported for measuring the velocity using a lenticular grating. The principle of the method is theoretically described on the basis of transmission-grating velocimetry. The theoretical studies are performed to estimate the deflection and collection characteristics of the light passing through the lenticular grating. The method is used to measure the velocity of a rotating random pattern. The experimental results show the usefulness of the method for measurements of the velocity.

Notes: Abstract An experimental and theoretical investigation of the fluctuations of the pulses from continuous-wave mode-locked lasers is presented. It is shown that these fluctuations can be detected and quantitatively characterized from measurements of the power spectrum of the light intensity. Such power spectra can be measured with great accuracy by shining the laser output on a suitable photodetector and by processing the detector signal with the use of an electronic spectrum analyzer. Different types of noise such as fluctuations of the pulse energy, pulse repetition time, and pulse duration, can be readily recognized from their characteristic spectral signature. Experimental results of noise measurements are presented for a synchronously mode-locked dye laser pumped by an acousto-optically mode-locked argon ion laser, and also for a colliding pulse passively mode-locked dye laser.

Notes: Abstract The behavior of light in dielectric gratings is discussed in terms of the optical Floquet-Bloch waves (or modes). The emphasis is on the development of a good physical understanding of the nature of these waves, using the wavevector diagram to summarize their spatial dispersion and spectra. It is shown that Floquet-Bloch theory offers some advantages conceptually over the commonly used coupled-wave theory, because the rays of the Floquet-Bloch waves (given by their group velocities) play the same role in a periodic medium as do those of plane waves in isotropic or graded-index media. The effect on power conservation of truncating the Floquet expansions for the Floquet-Bloch waves is considered in detail. Using the greater intuitive power of Floquet-Bloch theory, it is shown (in contrast to recent claims to the contrary) how rigorous coupled-wave theory can be applied to symmetrical reflection gratings, and secondly how the light in these gratings can be viewed in terms of the multiple-beam interference of Floquet-Bloch waves, leading to behavior reminiscent of a low-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity.

Notes: Abstract Intense green and red components generated in a non-polarization preserving optical fibre using a Q-switched and mode-locked cw Nd: YAG laser have been examined spectrally and temporally with picosecond resolution. In addition to the red (four-photon interaction) and green (second-harmonic) components, many other frequency mixing processes were detected. From theoretical considerations, the red component (anti-Stokes) which is generated through parametric four photon mixing should be in the same propagation mode as the Stokes component (ir) and this was confirmed experimentally.

Notes: Abstract Amplitude modulation of the laser beam in a TEM mn mode by means of a mechanical chopper is investigated on the basis of the chopping model represented by a moving system of infinitely long, parallel slots and mark spaces. The cases of rectangular and axial symmetry of the laser beam are both treated. The explicit expressions for the waveform of the modulated normalized transmitted laser power are deduced and their consequences investigated. It is found that in the case of rectangular symmetry, unlike the case of axial symmetry, the TEM mn modes give, for a constant value of the mode numbern and for any value ofm, the same time dependence of the amplitude modulated laser power. The notion of the equivalent modulation widths is introduced and conditions for the efficient amplitude modulation are found.

Notes: Abstract We observed and compared the opto-voltaic signals in CO and CO2 lasers. The signals are obtained capacitively from the water cooling jacket as a low voltage source not influencing the current circuit. We observed from measurement that the output power and the so-called optovoltaic input power have a distinct relationship depending on laser current and cavity parameters. It will be shown that opto-voltaic detection is a very sensitive method especially for CO lasers.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports on a method for measuring the velocity gradient using a laser Doppler phenomenon. The velocity gradient is determined from the velocity difference between two different points of the probing object and is actually obtained from the optical heterodyning of two differently Doppler-shifted scattered light fields from two points of the object having different velocities. The properties of output beat signals are theoretically investigated from their spectral broadening including the effect of the detecting aperture. The preliminary experiment was performed by using a rotating glass disk whose velocity is different from its center to the outside. The experimental results shows the usefulness of the present method for measurements of the velocity gradient.

Notes: Abstract The increase of the interrupting capability of modern SF6 puffer breakers demands a better knowledge of the interaction of the arc with the gas flow. During the current interruption in an SF6 breaker the arc temperature in the stagnation zone is of decisive importance. The temporal evolution of the arc temperature and the diameter is studied by means of interferometry and emission spectroscopy. Experimental results are presented which show the influence of the current slope and the gas pressure on the arc decay. These results are compared with a theoretical model describing the temperature decay after current interruption.

Notes: Abstract We describe an extremely sensitive method to investigate nonradiative processes following optical excitation. In a low-temperature calorimeter, the sample is irradiated with monochromatic light. The absorbed energy which is converted into phonons leads to a measurable increase of the sample temperature. The lowest detectable dissipated energy is 2·10−12J at a working temperature of 0.03 K. We demonstrate our method with a calorimetric absorption spectrum of J-aggregate monolayers of 1-methyl-1′-octadecyl-2,2′-cyanine. From this spectrum the emission quantum efficiency is obtained as a function of excitation wavelength. A relative minimum is found at the long wavelength edge of the absorption band at 582.5 nm.

Notes: Abstract Application of gas-phase molecular substances in nonlinear optics appears very promising. The paper reports on the experimental two-photon-resonant four-wave frequency-mixing of Nd: YAG laser radiation inp-terphenyl (PTP) vapors. The nonlinear susceptibility calculated from the experimental data made χ(3)≃10−31 ESU. This value is commensurable with the quasiresonant susceptibility of alkali atoms and is considerably higher than the resonant susceptibilities of simple molecules such as NO and CO. The paper seems to be the first devoted to the nonlinear frequency-mixing in dye vapors.

Notes: Abstract The reduction mechanism of speckles appearing in laser-microscope images is studied theoretically and experimentally when an object is illuminated by laser light through a rotating multimode optical fiber. The principle of the speckle reduction is based on independent addition of microscope images with boiling-like speckles as a result of the rotational motion of the optical fiber used for illumination. Especially, the speckle reduction is evaluated from first-order statistics of the speckle intensity in which its saturation effect is taken into consideration.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports for the first time the fully optical remote monitoring of low-level CH4 gas with a wide area coverage of 10 km in diameter realized by utilizing ultralowloss silica optical fibre link and a compact absorption cell in conjunction with highly radiant InGaAsP and InGaAs light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the near infrared region. For this novel application, the near-infrared absorption spectra of CH4 molecules were measured and studied involving the ν2+2ν3 combination band around 1.33 μm and the 2ν3 overtone band around 1.66 μm. This fibre-optic system was demonstrated to be feasible and sufficiently sensitive and safe as being a practical CH4 gas remote sensor whose detection sensitivity is normally required to be 25% of the lower explosion limit (LEL) of CH4 gas in air. This result verifies a large potential for applying extensively to various strategic points within the environment, such as industrial and mining complexes as well as urban and residential areas, with considerably increased reability, safety and marketability over the presently available techniques.

Notes: Abstract A study of the effects of spatially and partially coherent illumination on the noise performance of an optical processor is presented here. Noise arising from defects in the object plane and the Fourier plane are considered separately. Two important types of noise are analyzed in detail: (a) amplitude noise and (b) ramdom phase noise. The results illustrate that the effects of the object phase noise can be reduced when the requirements on spatial coherence are relaxed. Also, the noise at the Fourier plane can be effectively eliminated when a spatially incoherent light source is employed.

Notes: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has been tested for the isotope-selective determination of trace amounts of plutonium. An atomic beam is formed by evaporating plutonium atoms from a rhenium-filament heated to 1800 °C. The radiation of a pulsed dye laser excites the atoms in a two-photon process (λ=595.2 nm) followed by photoionization of the excited atoms. Mass selectivity is obtained by use of a time-of-flight spectrometer. A resonant signal of239Pu was measured with 1013 atoms deposited on the filament.

Notes: Abstract We show that in the presence of a bandwidth-limiting component intracavity selfphase modulation in high power mode-locked and Q-switched lasers is accompanied by interesting pulse-shaping phenomena. If the phase modulation is properly controlled the pulse duration can approach the limit given by the frequency bandwidth of the laser. For example, for a Nd: YAG laser our calculations predict an intracavity pulse compression by approximately a factor of ten over the typical pulse duration of conventional mode-locking.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the Pt deposition yields on various substrate materials from Pt(PF3)4 in the case where a KrF laser irradiates the solid surface. The data imply that an ample amount of electrons is produced by the laser surface interaction and dissociative electron capture initiates the metal deposition. The metal atom release is completed by a concerted surface reaction at a reduced energy demand. This is evidenced by thermochemical considerations. A simple criterion is derived to estimate the attainable spatial resolution. Sudden melting and evaporation beyond a certain layer thickness interferes with the deposition process. This is in accord to a model given, based on a poor thermal contact at the platinum substrate interface. The results may help to optimize uv laser induced metal deposition with respect to purity, adherence and structure.
