    Description: New lithostratigraphic Standard is proposed for the Quaternary volcanic succession at Deception Island, South Shetland Islands (West Antarctica). The succession is subdivided into the older Foster Group (redefined group) which includes pre-caldera volcanics, and the younger Hawkes Group (new group) which includes syn-caldera and post-caldera volcanics and volcanic forms. The Foster Group consists of four formations (new units): the Entrance Fm. (basallic and basaltic andesite lavas and pyroclastics); the Cathcdral Fm. (agglomerates); the Stonethrow Fm. (basaltic andesite lavas alternating with agglomerates); and the Window Fm. (trachybasalt dykes). The Hawkes Group consists of seven formations (new units): the Murature Fm. (andesitic lapilli tuff, destroyed ring tephra cones); the Ronald Fm. (trachydacite lava and plug); the Collins F/n. (trachydacite lava flows, tuffs, craters and destroyed cones); the Chacao Fm. (basaltic andesite tephra cones and maars); the Casco Fm. (basaltic andesite tephra cones with craters); the Kirkwood Fm. (basaltic lavas and tephra; fissure eruptions and craters); and the Telefon Fm. (andesitic tephra cones, lavas and tephra cover associated with fissure eruptions, maars). The Telefon Fm. (three phases) relates to the 1967-1970 volcanic activity; the Kirkwood Fm. includes the 1842 event and the events between 1829 and 1912; all older formations pre-date 1829.

    Description: Age and growth were estimated in the European squid, Loligo vulgaris, by examining growth increments in the statoliths of 203 specimens collected from off the French Mediterranean coast. Length and increment data were analyzed assuming that the increments were formed daily. The relationships between age and length showed that: growth rate varied considerably among individuals; growth was double exponential; the squids grew on average to 240 mm ML at 240 d from hatching, with a maximum of 350 mm at 240 d; the life span is probably about one year.

    Description: Some of the limits to the use of serology to identify prey species in the digestive tracts of cephalopods have been evaluated. Cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, were given meals of krill slurry (Euphausia superba). Protein extracts of contents from four regions of the digestive tract, stomach, caecum, digestive gland and intestine, were tested for prey antigenicity. Digestion times (loss of antigenicity) ranged from 1 to 8 h depending on sampling site. Stomach and caecum emptied rapidly, but meal antigenicity persisted longer in the digestive gland. The Sepia experiments provide a basis for interpretation of results from natural predation by cephalopods).

    Description: Distribution and abundance of the horned octopus Eledone cirrhosa in the Tyrrhenian Sea are described on the basis of stratified-random bottom trawl surveys in spring and summer of the years 1985–1987. Specimens were caught between 25 and 630 m depth (higher densities between 50 and 200 m depth); mature males were found to prefer deeper bottoms than mature females. Young specimens occurred in spring samples from the Western Ligurian Sea and in summer samples from the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, but were scarcely represented in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea. Thus recruitment seems to be progressively delayed later in the season from north to south. The greatest abundance was recorded in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea; wide seasonal variations of minimum stock biomass estimates have been observed and total biomass decreased from 1985 to 1987 in the surveyed areas.

    Description: Samples of the squid Martialia hyadesi were collected aboard two Japanese squid-jigging vessels carrying out commercial fishing trials at the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone, north Scotia Sea, in February 1989. The dissected stomachs of 61 specimens were classified according to fullness and the contents were examined visually. Identifiable food items included fish sagittal otoliths, crustacean eyes, the lappets on euphausiid first antennule segments and cephalopod sucker rings. The most frequent items in the squid's diet were the myctophid fishes Krefftichthys anderssoni and Electrona carlsbergi, the euphausiid Euphausia superba and a hyperiid amphipod, probably Themisto gaudichaudi. A small proportion of the sample had been feeding cannibalistically. Total lengths of the fish prey were estimated from sagittal otolith size using published relationships. All fish were relatively small; 7 to 35% of squid mantle-length. However, it is possible that some heads of larger fish are discarded by the squid and so are not represented by otoliths in the stomach contents. Over the size range of squid in the sample there was no relationship between size of fish prey and size of squid. Similarly, when the squid sample was divided into groups according to prey categories: crustaceans, crustaceans+fish, fish, cephalopod, there was no evidence that dietary preference was related to squid size. The prevalence of copepod-feeding myctophids in the diet of this squid, which is itself a major prey item of some higher predators in the Scotia Sea, suggests that a previously unrecognised food chain: copepod-myctophid-M. hyadesi-higher predator, may be an important component of the Antarctic oceanic ecosystem.

    Description: The main types of reproductive system structure, development and functions in cephalopods are described from personal observations and use of the literature. There is one type in males and three in females which are order specific. These have provided a basis for examining possible evolutionary trends in reproductive system development and in reproductive strategies within coleoid cephalopods and for developing a general scale for maturity staging for males and females. Development of the cephalopod reproductive system consists of two main phases. The first includes sexual cell differentiation, growth and maturation (i.e. juvenile phase and physiological maturation). The second begins after maturation of sexual cells. It includes their transport and accumulation in different parts of the reproductive system and their conversion into spermatophores in males and eggs with protective coverings in females (i.e. physiological maturity, functional maturation and maturity). It was found that species with different life styles within each order have similar reproductive systems. This may be attributable to the relative youth in an evolutionary sense of the main groups of living cephalopods. A general scale of seven maturity stages for cephalopods was developed. Distinct characteristics of each stage are described and supplemented with a generalized drawing of gonad structure. In the first phase of reproductive system development, maturity stages are distinguished by the degree of development of the gonad and accessory glands. In the second phase maturity stages are distinguished by the fate of the mature sexual cells, particularly by their transport and location in different parts of the reproductive system up to the time of spawning

    Description: The diet of the Wandering Albatross at Subantarctic Marion Island was studied by inducing recently fed chicks to regurgitate and by stomach flushing adults about to feed chicks. Liquid comprised 70.2% of stomach content mass recovered from chicks. Solid material comprised cephalopods (58.6% by mass), fish (36.5%) and crustacean, cetacean and seabird material as minor items. Twenty-three taxa of cephalopods were identified, the onychcteuthid squid Kondakovia longimana being the most important. Estimated average mass of squid was 694 g with a maximum of over 8 kg. Diet of the Wandering Albatross at Marion Island was broadly similar to that at other studied localities. The high proportion of cephalopods known to float after death in the diet, and the deep-water habits of the few fish identified, suggest that scavenging plays an important role in foraging behaviour.

    Description: The reproductive strategy of the cirrate octopods Opisthoteuthis agassizii and O. vossi (collected off Namibia from 1988 to 1990) was analyzed. Ovarian oocyte size frequency analysis for both species revealed continuous egg production over the entire adult life span. Mature eggs were stored in the single oviducal gland and distal oviduct, but oviducal gland fullness was not related to body size (p〉0.2). All O. agassizii male specimens from 95 to 5400 g total weight were sexually mature, as were all females from 190 to 1650 g, indicating that considerable growth takes place after the onset of sexual maturity. “Continuous spawning” is defined as a single, extended and continuous period of egg maturation and spawning. This model of reproductive strategy is previously unreported in cephalopods. All O. vossi male specimens from 750 to 3050 g total weight, and females from 800 to 1300 g, were sexually mature. Mature males and females of both species were collected in all seasons of the year. The adaptation of cirrate octopods to non-scasonal deep-sea environments is considered. The sexual maturity characteristics of males were analyzed, and examination of the spermatophore revealed opercular structures previously unreported in cephalopods. For females, the micropyle of the eggs are described and the mineral analysis of the egg shell disclosed that sulphur was the major element present.

    Description: The beaks of 9,994 cephalopods of 61 species, obtained mainly from chick regurgitations of wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans L.) at Gough, Auckland, Antipodes, Prince Edward and Macquarie Islands and South Georgia, were used to specify and calculate the biomass of cephalopods consumed. Histioteuthidae were most important by numbers and biomass at Gough Island (in warmest seas), but Onycboteuthidae increasingly superseded them southwards; Kondakovia longimana formed 59 to 75% of biomass eaten at the three localities nearest the Antarctic Polar Front. Other important families were Octopoteuthidae, Cranchiidae, Architeuthidae (juveniles) and Ommastrephidae (South Georgia only). Most frequently eaten were Histioteuthis atlantica 13.7%, Galiteuthis glacialis 12.4%, H. eltaninae 12.0% and Kondakovia longimana 11.6%. Wandering albatrosses rearing chicks can forage at least to 3,000 km in a single foray, and may exploit an important food source about 1200 km from the nest (as in the probable commensalism of South Georgian birds with the Falkland Islands fishery). They feed, sometimes opportunistically, on cephalopods active or moribund at the surface, or discarded or lost by trawlers, cetaceans or seals. Vertically migrating cephalopods, especially bioluminescent species, are disproportionately frequent in their non-commensal diet, suggesting that they often feed at night.

    Description: During a study of Dark-romped Petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia) breeding biology in the Galapagos Islands, we collected over 80 samples of food regurgitated by petrel chicks. We identified the prey to the lowest possible taxonomic level and determined the relative importance of each food class in the petrel's diet. We also monitored the daily changes in mass of 14 chicks on Floreana Island to determine the quantity of food delivered as well as the food delivery rate. Dark-romped Petrel hatchlings were fed a mixture of stomach oils, semi-digested fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. On the basis of mass composition, about 46% of the diet was cephalopods, about 37% fish, and about 17% crustaceans. Cephalopods, of at least 16 families, occurred with the greatest regularity. Fish were present in the samples more frequently than Crustacea: seven and five families, respectively. Feeding rates were highest in the month after hatching and lowest before fledging. Estimated food loads averaged 68 g and did not increase in size over the growth period. Dark-romped Petrels fed on mainly mesopelagic prey, taken presumably at night, while ranging up to 2,000 km from the colonies, largely southwards.

    Description: A link is proposed between the processes that led to the evolution of large species of squid and the highly variable, cyclic recruitment seen in squid fisheries. Maximum growth requires maximal feeding and minimal routine metabolism at optimum temperatures, which decrease as squid grow. Topographically induced upwelling zones, inshore of western boundary currents, provide productive environments with appropriate temperatures for all life stages. Most squid are small and live in the tropics or subtropics; locomotor constraints prevent them from swimming long distances. Long annual migrations to spawn upstream in current systems require short-lived squids to maximize rates of growth. Therefore, such systems provide the opportunity and a powerful selective advantage for large size and rapid growth. Increased fecundity and cannibalism provide additional directional selection for large individuals. Current systems show food production peaks (blooms); paralarval release must match these to increase survival. Because squid are semelparous, disruption of delicately balanced lifecycles by physical events can virtually annihilate stocks. Recovery probably requires that populations of large squid "re-evolve" from smaller, more-stable tropical populations of small squid. This recovery phase may extend the "down-side" of abundance cycles. Studies of squid/current systems have focused on western boundary currents, but the Illex complex also associates with eastern boundaries. Such populations are generally smaller than in larger systems, supporting the hypothesis, but more detailed comparisons are required.

    Description: During a cruise in March 1988 dedicated to investigation of the marine resources of South Africa's continental slope, 62 species in 22 families of Cephalopoda were collected from the Cape Canyon and Cape Point Valley. Multivariate analysis revealed a clear distinction between cephalopods of the upper and lower continental slope in both benthic and epibenthic habitats. Todaropsis eblanae and Todarodes angolensis were indicator species for the upper slope benthic, from 300 to 500 m, but on the lower slope, in 700–900 m of water, they were replaced by Histioteuthis miranda and Opisthoteuthis agassizii. In the epibenthic, both upper and lower slopes were dominated by Abraliopsis gilchristi and Lycoteuthis ?diadema, but other species characteristic of the lower slope were the oceanic species Mastigoteuthis hjorti, Ctenopteryx sicula and Taonius sp. A. Cranchia scabra indicated the presence of oceanic water at stations 700–900 m deep. Other species of significance in the catches were Todarodes filippovae, Histioteuthis macrohista, Rossia enigmatica and Bathypolypus valdiviae. Species affinities indicate that the cephalopod fauna of the southern African continental slope includes the following zoogeographic components: southern African endemic, circum-Subantarctic species associated with Antarctic Intermediate Water, circum-global southern tropical/subtropical, tropical Indo-Pacific and cosmopolitan tropical/subtropical.

    Description: Literature on trophic relationships in the Benguela ecosystem has stressed the importance of cephalopods as prey of groundfish. The groundfish community of the shelf and upper slope of southern Africa is dominated by the Cape hakes, and the results presented (1984–1991) confirm that both species of hake are important predators of cephalopods, especially taking into consideration the abundance of hake in the ecosystem. However, geographic, seasonal and species variability are evident in the patterns observed. The main prey species are Sepia spp. (predominantly Sepia australis), Loligo vulgaris reynaudii, Todaropsis eblanae and Lycoteuthis ?diadema. The last-named is an important food organism for fish. Its systematic status needs revision, however. Qualitative results of studies of cephalopod predation are also provided for kingklip and monkfish.

    Description: Cephalopods of importance in the Benguela ecosystem include Loligo vulgaris reynaudii, Todarodes angolensis, Todaropsis eblanae, Lycoteuthis ?diadema, Sepia australis, Octopus spp. (up to three species) and Argonauta spp., and possibly also Ocythoe tuberculata and Rossia enigmatica. Species which may prove important as a result of further research are Lolliguncula mercatoris, Ommastrephes bartramii, Todarodes filippovae, Histioteuthis miranda and Abraliopsis gilchristi. "Importance" is defined on the basis of "survey abundance" (including commercial fisheries) and their trophic links with other organisms. Use of the latter criterion indicates that Sepia australis, Todaropsis eblanae and Lycoteuthis ?diadema are sufficiently abundant to be exploited by fisheries. Unknown factors are dispersal, availability and market considerations. The only examples of cephalopods feeding on commercial species of fish are Loligo v. reynaudii feeding on anchovy Engraulis capensis and Cape hakes Merluccius capensis and/or M. paradoxus in the southern Benguela and Todarodes angolensis preying on Cape hake in the northern Benguela. Such feeding is opportunistic and is not believed to threaten the fish stocks. Predators of cephalopods are mostly opportunistic, switching to other prey when cephalopods are not available. There is no evidence that such predators pose a threat to the Loligo fisheries. The opportunistic nature of cephalopods as prey and predators makes quantification of predation (in both directions) difficult. Data for such quantification are, as yet, unavailable.

    Description: The results of ichthyoplankton surveys carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Pesca (INAPE) in the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) in summer 1980 and the winters of 1980–1982 are presented. In addition, the results of joint research with INIDEP, the Argentine and Japan Fisheries Agency, on larvae, juveniles and adults of the short-finned squid Illex argentinus carried out in winter 1989 are given, as are data obtained during the joint sardine and anchovy recruitment project carried out by R.V. Meteor in November/December 1989. The short-finned squid Illex argentinus is the most important cephalopod resource of the area, and an extended fishery is carried out on the Patagonian shelf and in the proximity of the Falkland Islands. The fishing season in the AUCFZ, for pre-spawning and spawning animals, extends from early autumn to winter (March–August). Abundance of rhynchoteuthion larvae (417–485 larvae·10 m−2) was greatest in winter in surface temperatures of 12,1–16,9°C and surface salinities of 34,8 – 35,2 × 10−3. The distribution of the larvae is related to the western boundary of the Brazil Current and the convergence front.

    Description: Cephalopod paralarvae and juveniles were sampled with RMT8 and Bongo nets during 2 cruises of the MV 'Falklands Protector' in the southwest Atlantic Ocean in October/November 1990 and 1991. Each cruise had 2 phases, a northern phase over the Patagonian Shelf edge and adjacent waters, and a southern phase over the shelf around the Falkland Islands. Vertical temperature profiles were used to identify the major fronts and water masses. The subtropical water of the Brazil Current was characterized by the tropical/subtropical Abraliopsis pfefferi and Histioteuthis corona corona, the subtropical/subantarctic H. atlantica and the widespread Taningia danae, species of Brachioteuthis, Chiroteuthis and Galiteuthis, a single specimen of Illex argentinus and an ommastrephid rhynchoteuthion type B. The subantarctic surface water of the Falkland Current contained the richest assemblage of species and was characterised by the subtropical/subantarctic H. atlantica, the subantarctic Batoteuthis skolops, H. eltaninae, H. macrohista and the subantarctic/antarctic Gonatus antarcticus. With the exception of some small Gonatus antarcticus, the polar frontal zone water of the Falkland Current was relatively poor in species. The Falkland Islands Shelf yielded Loligo gahi, Gonatus antarcticus, Martialia hyadesi, Moroteuthis knipovitchi, Batoteuthis skolops, Semirossia patagonica and an Octopus sp. The data provide new information on the life cycles of Martialia hyadesi and Gonatus antarcticus and are consistent with the view that L. gahi reproduces in shallow water around the Falkland Islands with 1 major brood spawning in the late austral winter.

    Description: The question whether the chokka squid Loligo vulgaris reynaudii resource can be managed effectively is examined in the light of developments in the fishery and knowledge of the resource gathered in recent years. The history of the fishery since its inception in 1985, management controls and the current state of knowledge of stock identity, distribution, seasonality and abundance, life cycle and population dynamics are reviewed as a background to a discussion of management alternatives. Long-term measures, such as fleet limitation, seasonal closures and de facto closed areas and size limits, all appropriate in the early stages of a fishery when knowledge is limited, should be replaced by more-flexible alternatives as knowledge improves. Methods of stock assessment, stock-recruitment studies and further basic biological analyses are recognized as being crucial to improving management methods. An explanation embracing physical oceanographic features and plankton productivity in the vicinity of the spawning grounds is advanced for the mechanisms underlying hatchling survival. The possible contribution of trophic studies to squid management is recognized. Effective management of the chokka squid resource is concluded to be possible provided that the specific areas needing attention be addressed by means of goal-orientated research. Rational, but not necessarily optimal, management decisions can, however, be made even in the absence of stock-recruitment data, by the employment of common-sense measures which generally include some form of effort control.

Statolith morphology is similar to that of other species of the subfamily Ommastrephinae and is similar to the sibling species S. oulaniensis. Statolith development includes five stages resembling those of Illex illecebrosus and other ommastrephids. Statolith growth is characterized by negative allometry. Increments visible in ground sections of statoliths can be grouped into four main growth zones, differing mainly in colour and increment width. Age and growth rates of S. pteropus were calculated using increment counts. The life span of females of all size groups does not exceed 1 yr, that of males is 1–2 months shorter, probably due to preliminary mating. Instantaneous relative growth rage (G) of paralarvae is high (up to 16% of body weight (BW)). G values for juveniles decline, but remain relatively high (7–8% BW). Juveniles attain 100–110 mm ML by age 100–110 days. G values for adults are the lowest (1.8–2% BW), but daily growth rates reach maximum values (40–70 g per day in large females of 450–500 mm ML). Each ontogenetic phase of S. pteropus corresponds to features of morphology, growth and microstructure of the statolith.

    Description: Experimental light luring fishing was conducted in west coast of the Gulf of Thailand using a stick-held cast net. A variety of fishes were simultaneously caught with a higher proportion of commercially important Indian squid Loligo duvauceli. Three trends in catch of squid observed might directly be correlated to the catch of other species simultaneously captured. It was clearly shown that the catch of Indian squid reached its maximum level (10-20kg/haul) at the catch of other species approximately 0.5-1.0kg/haul. The relationship between the presence of other species and the amount of squids caught were analyzed in consideration of size structure of both Indian squid L. duvauceli, and Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta, commonly apperaring in the catches. The catch of larger size squid more than about 15cm mantle length seemed to be correlated with the presence of Indian mackerel.

    Description: The myofilament protein compositions of muscle fibres from the transverse muscle mass of the tentacles and the transverse muscle mass of the arms of the loliginid squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana were compared. These two muscle masses are distinct types, differing in their ultrastructural and behavioural properties. The transverse muscle of the tentacles consists of specialized muscle fibres that exhibit cross-striation and unusually short sarcomeres and thick filaments. The transverse muscle of the arms consists of obliquely striated muscle fibres that are typical of cephalopod skeletal muscle in general. The specialization of the tentacle muscle results in a high shortening speed and reflects its role in creating rapid elongation of the tentacles during prey capture. Comparison of samples of myofilament preparations of the two muscle fibre types using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and peptide mapping of myosin heavy chains from the two muscle fibre types, however, showed little evidence of differences in contractile protein isoforms. Thus, specialization for high shortening speed appears to have occurred primarily through changes in the dimensions and arrangement of the myofilament lattice, rather than through changes in biochemistry. The thick filament core protein paramyosin was tentatively identified in the squid muscle fibres. This protein was less abundant in the short thick filament cross-striated tentacle muscle cells than in the obliquely striated arm cells.

    Description: A survey on squid catches was dine in coastal waters off Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia, in 1989 and 1990. Data were taken from three gears: two commercial boats employing jigs and a purse seine, respectively, and a newly developed squid net. Fishing operations were carried out in open water during moonless nights. Emphasis was placed on the catch of the two most common and dominant squids found in the area, Loligo chinensis and Loligo sibogae. It was found that both L. chinensis and L. sibogae can be caught throughout the water column by the purse seine while mainly L. sibogae was obtained from near surface by the squid net. Jigs caught only L. chinensis and these were much bigger than the same species taken by the other two gears.

    Description: Abnormal geopressure results from disequilibrium between excess fluid, which must be removed to maintain normal compaction, and the fluid expelling capacity of sediments. The effects of two factors affecting geopressure, namely compaction and aquathermal pressuring, are studied using a hydrodynamic model based on the solution of simultaneous equations (mainly Darcy's law and Athy's porosity-depth relationship). Geopressures are computed on a one-dimensional sediment profile and based on four environments that may significantly influence the excess pore-fluid volume and the permeability of sediments. The quantitative excess analysis demonstrates that in actual geologic environments, the aquathermal factor has no practical significance in abnormal pressure occurrence.

    Description: The carbon isotopic composition of methane emitted by the Alaskan emergent aquatic plants Arctophila fulva, a tundra mid-lake macrophyte, and Carex rostrata, a tundra lake margin macrophyte, was −58.6 ± 0.5 (n=2) and −66.6±2.5 (n= 6) ‰ respectively. The methane emitted by these species was found to be depleted in 13C by 12‰ and 18‰, relative to methane withdrawn from plant stems 1 to 2 cm below the waterline. As the macrophyte-mediated methane flux represented approximately 97% of the flux from these sites, these results suggest the more rapid transport of 12CH4 relative to 13CH4 through plants to the atmosphere. This preferential release of the light isotope of methane, possibly combined with CH4 oxidation, caused the buildup of the heavy isotope within plant stems. Plant stem methane concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 4.0% ( math formula, 1.4; standard deviation (sd), 0.9; n=28) in Arctophila, with an isotopic composition of −46.1±4.3 ‰ (n = 8). Carex stem methane concentrations were lower, ranging from 150 to 1200 ppm ( math formula, 500; standard deviation, 360; n = 8), with an isotopic composition of −48.3±1.4‰ (n=3). Comparisons of the observed isotopic fractionations with those predicted from gas phase effusion and diffusion coefficients suggest a combination of one or both of these gas transport mechanisms with bulk (non-fractionationating) flow.

    Description: This study compiles results obtained during the years 1984-1989 from a number of field experiments and studies concerning substrate specificity, biomass, population development, growth rates, life cycle and reproduction of Halichondria panicea (Pallas) in Kiel Bight. Data on biomass development of H. panicea during the year show a general increase in biomass from spring to summer and a subsequent decrease during the fall; biomasses and growth rates are higher in shallower water depths, while abundance increases with depth between 6 and 12 m. Sexual reproduction takes place during a short period in early summer by means of larvae. While salinity does not influence reproductive processes, temperature is very important. Low water temperatures in winter and early spring can delay the release of larvae for about one month. Data on the relationship between the sponges and their substrate algae show how differences and changes in the depth distribution and population dynamics of the sessile fauna on red algae can only be interpreted correctly by including data on fauna! growth rates, time and mode of reproduction, as well as biomass, distribution and dynamics of the substrate algae. The merits of different sampling strategies for the acquisition of different kinds of biological information in this biotope are discussed.

    Description: About 1500 photographs from three different areas along the eastern Weddell Sea shelf and slope were analysed with respect to their sponge fauna. On the basis of material collected in concurrent bottom trawls, 34 sponge taxa were identified. Cluster and multidimensional scaling analysis showed the sponges to belong to different associations. Spatial extension of the associations is judged to be between several hundred meters and about 2 km. A deeper association (390–1125 m) on predominantly muddy substrates along a transect at Halley Bay is characterized by four opportunistic demosponge species; a second association on harder substrate in shallower depths (99–225m) off Kapp Norvegia is more diverse, with hexactinellids as one dominant component. A third cluster, comprising both Halley Bay and Kapp Norvegia stations (458–626 m), is dominated by four species which constitute a subcluster within the Kapp Norvegia sponge association. Densities vary strongly within clusters and in between geographically close stations. The species associations are related to different substrates, not to depth. Within single stations most species are patchily distributed. Both association structure and species distribution within single stations can be explained on the basis of the biology of the single sponge species.

    Description: Turbulent fluxes have been measured in the atmospheric surface layer from a boom extending upwind from the Dutch offshore research platform Meetpost Noordwijk (MPN) during HEXMAX (Humidity Exchange over the Sea Main Experiment) in October–November, 1986. We started out to study eddy flux of water vapour, but discrepancies among simultaneous measurements made with three different anemometers led us to develop methods to correct eddy correlation measurements of wind stress for flow distortion by nearby objects. We then found excellent agreement among the corrected wind stress data sets from the three anemometers on the MPN boom and with eddy correlation measurements from a mast on a tripod. Inertial-dissipation techniques gave reliable estimates of wind stress from turbulence spectra, both at MPN and at a nearby ship. The data cover a range of wave ages and the results yield new insights into the variation of sea surface wind stress with sea state; two alternative formulas are given for the nondimensional surface roughness as a function of wave age.

    Description: Burrowing activities of the only European fiddler crab, Uca tangeri, and its resulting influence on biotope in mudflats were investigated during 1989-1990 at Ria Formosa, Portugal. Individuals use the same burrow for ca 1 wk, then occupy another or dig a new one. Overall a burrow is inhabited for ca 3 mo by several individuals before it is abandoned. Vacated burrows decay within 2 to 3 wk. Burrow size and number vary with the season. Burrow density was highest in spring and early summer with ca 17 burrows m-2, and then decreased. Deepest burrows (up to 90 cm long) were found in winter, the shallowest (up to 40 cm long) in summer. Volume of the sediment moved by U. tangen varied monthly between 3000 and 6000 cm3 per m2 of mudflat. Water is only found in the lower third of the burrow. Burrow water contains less oxygen and more nitrate than the surrounding water of the Ria Formosa.

    Description: Studies of laboratory cultures of Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton from southernmost South America revealed that this species has an obligate sexual life history in which a macroscopic sporophyte alternates with a monoecious microscopic gametophyte. Sexual reproduction is isogamous and under photoperiodic control. Gametes are produced only in short days, whereas in long days, asexual zoospores are formed that recycle the gametophyte generation. Unfused gametes develop into gametophytes, and sporophytes originate only from zygotes. Unlike other sexual members of the Chordariales, gametes of C. linearis have a reduced stigma and do not show phototaxis. They are released at the beginning of the night, not in the morning. In nature, C. linearis seems to be regularly infected by a dictyosiphonalean epiphyte resembling the rare arctic species Trachynema groenlandicum (Lund) Pedersen. The epiphyte is responsible for previous contradictory results obtained in laboratory cultures of C. linearis. This is the first record of Trachynema in the southern hemisphere.

    Description: Commercial fish species from the east Nigerian coast were examined for external lesions and flesh parasitic infections that may affect their consumability. Altogether, 2 886 specimens from 43 species representing 34 genera were sampled. The occurrence of lymphocystis disease in the pleuronectiform Cynoglossus senegalensis is here reported for the first time from an African marine teleost. Other external lesions of fishes encountered were fin rot, granulomas, pseudotumours and ulcers with total prevalences not exceeding 1%; The following commercial fish species were infected by muscle parasites at the given prevalences: Cynoglossus browni (metacercariae, 18%, Capillaria spinosa eggs, 27%; Echinocephalus sinensis L3 larvae, 9%; Philometra beninensis, 27%); C. senegalensis (Kudoa sp., 10%; metacercariae, 87%); Pseudotolithus brachygnathus (Hysterothylacium sp. larvae, 2%); P. senegalensis (Poecilancistrum cf caryophyllum plerocercoid, 1%; Philometra beninensis, 1% P. typus (Kudoa sp., 3%); Synaptura cadenati (Echinocephalus sinensis, 12%); Stromateus fiatola (trypanorhynch plerocer-coid, 44%); Epinephelus aeneus (didymozoid trematode, 44%; Hysterothylacium sp. larvae, 6%). Capillaria and Echinocephalus, representing helminths with zoonotic potential, present low risks to publie health due to their low prevalences and the local methods of preparing fish for consumption. Apart from C. spinosa eggs in soles and trypanorhynch plerocercoids in S.fiatola, none of the other flesh parasites are likely to affect the market value of their hosts at the recorded levels of occurrence. Carcharhinid sharks influence the occurrence in the locality of most fesh-parasitic helminths for which they serve as definitive hosts. The absence of the third stage larvae of zoonotic Anisakidae common in marine fishes from many other parts of the world is related to the unavailability of suitable hosts. Compared to the results from most temperate locations where similar studies have been carried out, the present study shows remarkably low prevalences and diversity for external lesions and flesh parasites in West African marine fishes

    Description: A vertical flux pulse related to spring phytoplankton development was recorded ·by moored sediment traps at 42°N 06°E in the Gulf of Lions. May 1990 trap samples from 200m to 2000m depth were comprised of freshly produced organic matter and selected microplankton species from the overlaying water column. This vertical flux event was transmitted to the deep sea floor with a high particle sinking velocity of 〉140 m day-1. Maximal vertical fluxes of 35 mg C m-2 day-1 and 1.2 mg chl.a m-2 day-1 recorded during this event are low compared to the exports from collapsing spring blooms at higher latitudes but demonstrate that particle production and degradation within the spring pelagic system were not in balance.

    Description: The presented data on indirect and direct calorimetry in Halicryptus spinulosus, a species with prominent ecological significance in parts of the Baltic Sea, provide a basis for a better understanding of the metabolic adaptation of these animals to low oxygen availability in their environment. Metabolic rates in H. spinulosus were measured respirometrically as oxygen consumption and calorimetrically as heat dissipation. Oxygen uptake rates are in the range of M O2 = 3.81 ± 1.37 μmol O2·g−1 dry mass·h−1. Upon reimmersion into normoxic seawater after an anoxic incubation of 7 days, the animals exhibit an overshoot of oxygen consumption by a factor of 2.4. It takes at least 2 days for the animals to balance their oxygen consumption to previously measured rates. Direct calorimetry exhibits different strategies of H. spinulosus to cope with declining oxygen and anoxia. During the first 2 transitional days to anoxia in the calorimeter, the animals decreased heat dissipation moderately down to 53.4 and 26%, respectively, of aerobic values. The animals are not necessarily quiescent at the beginning of anoxia, but at the end of the experiments after 14 days metabolic rates have dropped substantially down to ≈2% of normoxic values. These findings are discussed with regard to an effective adaption to frequently changing oxygen regimes in deeper parts of the Baltic Sea.

    Description: Trends in the hydrographic properties and nutrient concentrations of the Western Baltic from 1980 to 1990 are identified from national and HELCOM data (GESPA) and compared with those of the preceding decades. Found to be generally weak, these trends are analysed and discussed as integrated effects of the biological and chemical sink capacities of the ecosystem, natural effects (meteorological and hydrographic changes and water exchange), and anthropogenic factors. Measurements in the Kiel Bight are used to study modifications of annual cycles due to climatic fluctuations. It is demonstrated that the Kiel Bight area is representative of a considerable part of the Baltic Sea. The generation of artificial trend signals is discussed as a consequence of non-matching scales of processes and sampling frequencies and of changes in annual cycles, and effects of non-random properties of the data used for statistical treatment. The results of this discussion are used to evaluate the trends observed during the past decades. The congruence of the observed nutrient trends in the Kiel Bight and the descriptive and prognostic results of the Wulff and Stigebrandt budget model for the Baltic Sea and some subareas are examined.

    Description: Canopy regeneration by vegetative regrowth from damaged holdfasts has been examined in two species of rockweed, Fucus vesicu/osus and Fucus evanescens. About 20- 30% of experimentally damaged holdfasts sprouted large numbers of adventitious shoots, even when the basal tissue had been cut to less than 2 mm thickness. Vegetative regrowth was observed from minute amounts of holdfast tissue. This vegetative sprouting appears more important in the F vesiculosus zone than in the F evanescens zone. Comparison of Fucus growth in plots with sterilized or damaged holdfasts provided estimates of the relative importance of recruitment and vegetative regrowth to canopy recovery. We consider that vegetative regrowth from basal tissues may make variable but important contributions to succession in this community, and to the persistence of rockweed populations. We argue that the possibility of vegetative regrowth must be considered in interpreting successional patterns, particularly those which followed a recent, severe ice-scour of exposed seashores near Halifax, Nova Scotia.

    Description: In 1988 and 1989 the occurrence of external diseases in fish from the German part of the Wadden Sea was quantified. Thirty-two stations, located along seven transects including four estuaries, were sampled monthly or at 3-month intervals with shrimp trawlers: more than 124 000 fish were studied. Six percent of the seven dominant fish species of 〉 12 cm length were diseased. In fish species which complete their life cycle in the Wadden Sea (gobies, hooknose, eelpout, sea scorpion) the total disease incidence was below 0.4%. In whiting, plaice and sole it was between 0.5 and 2.5%, while 6–8% of smelt, cod, eel, dab and flounder suffered from external lesions. The incidence of most diseases increased with increasing fish length. Similar geographical patterns in prevalence were observed for: (1) two types of skeletal deformities, (2) lymphocystis in dab and flounder, (3) papillomatosis in smelt and dab and (4) several infectious ulcerative diseases. Most of these ulcerative diseases of cod and flounder occurred on central estuarine stations, suggesting an impact of the relatively low, but greatly variable salinity on disease development. Buccal granulomatosis of smelt and papillomatosis of eels showed the highest incidence in the Elbe estuary as the most heavily polluted region of the Wadden Sea. A causal relationship between disease development and pollution, however, is not yet clear and requires experimental evidence. The disease types found are ranked into three priority groups regarding their indicator value for a pollution monitoring on the basis of fish diseases. There is evidence that the total disease load of fish in the Wadden Sea is higher than in other shallow coastal regions outside the North Sea. Little is known of the effects of these diseases on single fish and fish populations. “Yellow pest” of cod, which was recorded for the first time during this survey, and which occurred with an incidence of up to 14% in single estuarine samples, causes the most serious lesions and is supposed to be lethal. In total, however, the effects of a number of pathogenic parasites on fish survival is considered to be more serious than that of deformities and infectious diseases.

    Description: In tropical and subtropical regions of the world, jellyfish stings cause fatalities by means of venom injecting nematocysts. For nematocyst discharge an adequate combination of chemical and mechanical stimulation is required. In order to test whether skin care products can protect against nematocyst discharge, we tested two sunscreens and one lotion applied to pieces of live human skin and exposed them to Cyanea capillata tentacles. (Test specimens were collected in 1990 along the shore of Rømø, Denmark and in the Flensburger Förde.) The fine structure analysis of the cnidom of C. capillata showed a high grade of variation in shape and size. The basic distinctive characteristic for stomocnides and astomocnides, the terminal opening at the tubule tip, could not be found. The identification of spines at the basal tubule of atrichous isorhizas suggested that these should be characterized as basitrichous isorhizas. An association between nematocyst morphology and a special function such as penetration or entanglement was not observed. All nematocyst types penetrated unprotected skin. Parafilm (an inert material) and unprotected skin substrates served as controls. The discharged nematocysts on the skin and Parafilm surfaces were counted using scanning electron microscopy. The percentage of discharged nematocysts on test substance protected skin surfaces ranged from only 7.7 to 38.2%, compared to 100% on the unprotected control skin. In addition to this marked reduction in nematocyst discharge, the relatively few discharged nematocysts on protected skin showed malfunctions, and the injection of venom would have failed because the tubules of the nematocysts did not penetrate the skin. The results indicate a general possibility that human skin may be protected against nematocyst discharge of jellyfish with the application of sunscreen or lotion.

    Description: The cloud liquid water path, LWP, over the North Sea during the International Cirrus Experiment 1989 (ICE'89) is derived from measurements of the microwave radiometer SSM/I on board.of the polar orbiting satellite DMSP and from measurements of a ground-based 33-GHz-radiometer operating on board of the German research vessel 'Poseldon'. Comparisons of maps of LWP compiled from the SSM/I data with time series computed from the ground-based system show no significant bias and agree within the range of uncertainty caused by the different sampling characteristics of the observing systems. Using a combination of SSM/I data and almost simultaneously recorded METEOSAT-IR data offers the possibility to identify different cloud types, e.g. to seperate cirrus clouds and cirrus with underlying water clouds. Both types may have the same IR-brightness temperature but different microwave brightness temperature because ice clouds have a negligible influence on the microwave radiances.

    Description: CO2 partial pressure in surface water was measured in the Northeast Atlantic and in the Hebride Shelf/North Sea area during a cruise with R.V. Poseidon in June 1991. A mean pCO2 of 303 μatm was found in the Atlantic between 50°N and 60°N. For an atmospheric CO2 content of 357.5 ppm(v) this corresponds to a partial pressure difference of −55 μatm. This supports the view that the subarctic Atlantic is a significant sink within the CO2 cycle between the ocean and the atmosphere. A comparison of our measurements with other data reveals that the pCO2 distribution changes significantly during May/June. This explained by seasonal warming, CO2 exchange with the atmosphere and biomass production. The contribution by each of these processes to the seasonal variations is calculated. It was found that during a plankton bloom the production of biomass is the dominating factor and may lower seawater pCO2 by almost 100 μatm. The shelf areas are charactrized by strong pCO2 gradients which are explained by water exchange with the Atlantic, temperature effects and biomass production.

    Description: The constancy of postmoult/premoult ratios of measures of linear size during ontogeny in insect and other arthropods is widely known as Dyar's rule. We tested this rule in nine species of the waterstrider genera Gerris and Aquarius (Heteroptera: Gerridae), using two size variables: head width and a multivariate measure derived from the pattern of multivariate allometry common to the species considered. Allometric patterns were similar in two independent datasets of laboratory-reared and field-caught specimens. Although our data strictly followed Dyar's rule injust a few instances, all growth ratios varied within a limited range only. Growth ratios for head width differed more between moults than those for multivariate size. The relationship between growth ratios for the two size measures conformed to the predictions based on allometry. We discuss hypotheses of the possible adaptive significance of growth ratios, such as their relation to mobility and systematic differences between hemimetabolous and holometabolous insects, and emphasize the importance of allometry. Since Dyar's rule is consistent with available evidence of physiological mechanisms underlying growth and moulting control of insects and crustaceans, it can be used as a general frame of reference to test alternative growth models.

    Description: The activity of four penguin species at sea was studied using new data loggers. One unit was fixed to the bird's backs and recorded swim speed, swim heading and dive depth from which the three dimensional movements of the birds at sea could be constructed by vector calculations. This unit additionally recorded sea temperature and light intensity. A further, single-channel logger was ingested by the birds and recorded stomach temperature during the periods at sea. Drops in stomach temperature were indicative of prey capture and could be ascribed to specific localities.

    Description: Methane seeps in shallow waters in the northern Kattegat off the Danish coast form spectacular submarine landscapes - the 'bubbling reefs' - due to carbonate-cemented sandstone structures which are colonized by brightly coloured animals and plants. These structures may be 100 m2 in area and consist of pavements, complex formations of overlying slab-type layers, and pillars up to 4 m high. The carbonate cement (high-magnesium calcite, dolomite or aragonite) is 13C-depleted, indicating that it originated as a result of microbial methane oxidation. It is believed that the cementation occurred in the subsurface and that the rocks were exposed by subsequent erosion of the surrounding unconsolidated sediment. The formations are interspersed with gas vents that intermittently release gas, primarily methane, at up to 25 1 h-' The methane most likely originated from the microbial decomposition of plant material eposited during the Eemian and early Weichselian periods, i.e. l00 000 to 125 000 years B.P. Aerobic methane oxidation in the sediment was restricted Lo the upper 4 cm in muddy sand and to the upper 13 cm In coarse sand. Maximum aerobic methane oxidation rates ranged from 4.8 to 45.6 pm01 dm-3 d". The rock surfaces and epifauna around the seeps were also sites of methane-oxidizing activity. Integrated sulphate reduction rates for the upper 10 cm of muddy sand gave 4.2 to 26.6 mm01 m-2 d-' These rates are higher than those previously reported from similar water depths in the Kattegat but did not relate to the sediment methane content. Since gas venting occurs over several km2 of the sea floor in the Kattegat it is likely to make a significant local contribution to the cycling of elements in the sediment and the water column. The rocks support a diverse ecosystem ranging from bacteria to macroalgae and anthozoans. Many animals live within the rocks in holes bored by sponges, polychaetes and bivalves. Stable carbon isotope composition (6'") of tissues of invertebrates from the rocks were in the range -17 to -24 'A, indicating that methane-derived carbon makes little direct contribution to their nutrition. Within the sediments surrounding the seeps there is a poor metazoan fauna, in terms of abundance, diversity and biomass. This may be a result of toxicity due to hydrogen sulphide input from the gas.

    Description: During the Bremerhaven Workshop in the southern North Sea, REMOTS sediment profile lmages (SPI) were recorded in order to supplement the benthic component of the workshop and other environmentally relevant parameters investigated along a spatial gradient at an abandoned exploratory drilling site off the Dutch coast. The sampling stations were in accordance with the other studies, but due to bad weather conditions only a small proportion of the intended samples were taken. The profile data were supplemented by video recordings of the sediment surface features taken on a second cruise. The results presented here have important implications for the interpretation of other benthic and sediment samples, and may help to interpret some enigmat~cw orkshop data.

    Description: The Multitracers Experiment studied a transect of water column, sediment trap, and sediment data taken across the California Current to develop quantitative methods for hindcasting paleoproductivity. The experiment used three sediment trap moorings located 120 km, 270 km, and 630 km from shore at the Oregon/California border in North America. We report here about the sedimentation and burial of particulate organic carbon (Corg) and CaCO3. In order to observe how the integrated CaCO3 and Corg burial across the transect has changed since the last glacial maximum, we have correlated core from the three sites using time scales constrained by both radiocarbon and oxygen isotopes. By comparing surface sediments to a two-and-a-half year sediment trap record, we have also defined the modern preservation rates for many of the labile sedimentary materials. Our analysis of the Corg data indicates that significant amounts (20–40%) of the total Corg being buried today in surface sediments is terrestrial. At the last glacial maximum, the terrestrial Corg fraction within 300 km of the coast was about twice as large. Such large fluxes of terrestrial Corg obscure the marine Corg record, which can be interpreted as productivity. When we corrected for the terrestrial organic matter, we found that the mass accumulation rate of marine Corg roughly doubled from the glacial maximum to the present. Because preservation rates of organic carbon are high in the high sedimentation rate cores, corrections for degradation are straightforward and we can be confident that organic carbon rain rate (new productivity) also doubled. As confirmation, the highest burial fluxes of other biogenic components (opal and Ba) also occur in the Holocene. Productivity off Oregon has thus increased dramatically since the last glacial maximum. CaCO3 fluxes also changed radically through the deglaciation; however, they are linked not to CaCO3 production but rather to changes in deepwater carbonate chemistry between 18 Ka and now.

    Description: Digital hydrographic data combined with satellite thermal infrared and visible band remote sensing provide a synoptic climatological view of the shallow planktonic environment. This paper uses wind, hydrographic, and ocean remote sensing data to examine southwest monsoon controls on the foraminiferal faunal composition of Recent seafloor sediments of the northwestern Arabian Sea. Ekman pumping resulting in open-ocean upwelling and coastal upwelling create two distinctly different mixed layer plankton environments in the northwestern Arabian Sea during the summer monsoon. Open-sea upwelling to the northwest of the mean July position of the Findlater Jet axis yields a mixed layer environment with temperatures of less than 25°C to about 26.5°C, phytoplankton pigment concentrations between 1.5 and 5.0 mg/m³, and mixed layer depths less than 50 m. Convergence in the Ekman layer in the central Arabian Sea drives the formation of a mixed layer that is greater than 50 m thick, warmer than about 26.5°C, and has phytoplankton pigment concentrations generally below 2.0 mg/m³. Coastal upwelling creates an extremely eutrophic plankton environment that persists over and immediately adjacent to the Omani shelf and undergoes significant offshore transport only within topographically induced coastal squirts. The foraminiferal faunal composition of upper Pleistocene deep-sea sediments of the northwestern Arabian Sea are mainly controlled by vertical nutrient fluxes caused by Ekman pumping, not coastal upwelling. Transfer functions for late Pleistocene mixed layer depth, temperature, and chlorophyll have been obtained through factor analysis and nonlinear multiple regression between late summer mixed layer environment and Recent sediment faunal observations.

    Description: This paper provides a detailed hydrographic climatology for the shallow northwestern Arabian Sea prior to and during the southwest monsoon, presented as multiple-year composite vertical hydrographic sections based on National Oceanographic Data Center historical ocean station data. Temperature and salinity measurements are used to infer the water masses present in the upper 500 m. The hydrographic evolution depicted on bimonthly sections is inferred to result from wind-driven physical processes. In the northwestern Arabian Sea the water mass in the upper 50 m is the Arabian Sea Surface Water. Waters from 50 to 500 m are formed by mixing of Arabian Sea Surface Water with Antarctic and Indonesian intermediate waters. The inflow of Persian Gulf Water does not significantly influence the hydrography of the northwestern Arabian Sea along the Omani coast. Nitrate has a high inverse correlation with temperature and oxygen in the premonsoon thermocline in the depth interval 50–150 m. During the southwest monsoon, coastal upwelling off Oman and adjacent offshore upward Ekman pumping alter the shallow hydrography.

    Description: The masses of sediment in the Molasse Basins of Switzerland, Germany and Austria total 0.299×1021 g. In the Neogene, other sediment shed north of the Alps went to the Rhine Graben (0.03×1021 g), and on to the northern European plains and North Sea (0.81×1021 g). During the Quaternary, the drainage systems were drastically reorganized, with the Danube capturing streams that drain the German and Austrian Alps, and delivering the sediment to the Pannonian Basin (0.15×1021 g) and on to the Black Sea (0.31×1021 g). Sediment shed to the west has entered the Bresse and Rhone Grabens (0.05×1021 g) and been deposited in the Rhone Delta (0.19×1021 g) and on the floor of the Gulf of Lions (0.24×1021 g). Sediment shed from the south side of the Alps resides in the Po Basin and Adriatic Sea that have total sediment masses of 0.38×1021 g and 0.36×1021 g respectively. Mass balanced reconstructions suggest that during the Chattian and Aquitanian (Late Oligocene-Early Miocene) thrusting in Switzerland, southern Germany and western Austria (Vorarlberg-Tyrol) resulted in mountains of Himalayan height, with elevations up to 7 km. Erosion attacked these mountains, existing sediments in the Molasse basins alone are equivalent to a layer 0.5 km thick, but represent only a fraction of the material originally deposited in them. Sediments equivalent to another 1.7 km thickness occur in the more peripheral basins. Sediment supply was greatly reduced in the middle Early Miocene (Burdigalian) indicating that the elevation of the mountains had decreased more rapidly than can be explained by erosion alone, which, after isostatic adjustment would have reduced the elevations only to about 5 km. The loss of elevation might have been due to a slow (ca. 1 my) flexural response to the narrow load on the southern edge of the European continental block, or to physical collapse of the mountains.

    Description: Sediments recovered at DSDP Sites 362 and 532 on Walvis Ridge Abutment Plateau and 530 in the southeastern Angola Basin record long-term waxing and waning of upwelling. The amounts of opaline silica and organic carbon in the sediments increase from latest Miocene to latest Pliocene then decline to present. During the late Pliocene, opaline silica accumulated ten times faster than during the late Pleistocene. If the area of accumulation also expanded to include the Abutment Plateau, this region would have been the global silica sink, consuming the equivalent of the entire silica output of the present ocean. The sediments contain light-dark cycles; the dark cycles contain more terrigenous material and on this basis have been interpreted as representing glacials. Before the Pliocene the maximum biological productivity in this region occurred during the glacials, but since then it has occurred during the interglacials, an effect of sea-level change on productivity opposite to that in most parts of the world. The most important factors causing the changes in sedimentation are judged to be threefold. (1) Closing of the Central American Isthmus resulted in salinization of the North Atlantic and caused increased production of NADW, AAIW and AABW. The increased rate of production of these water masses resulted in differentiation of nutrients among them and may have resulted in a shallower pycnocline facilitating upwelling of nutrient-rich water. The production of relatively nutrient-rich AAIW was a prerequisite for the long term increase in productive upwelling recorded by the late Miocene to latest Pliocene sediments. (2) During the Late Miocene northward migration of the subtropical high and ITCZ in response to growth of the Antarctic ice cap may have initiated productive upwelling over the Abutment Plateau. Subsequent southward migration of the ITCZ as the Earth changed from unipolar to bipolar glaciation would have enhanced the Angola Coastal Current and upwelling from the Angola Thermal Dome. A stronger Angola Coastal Current may have carried productive waters from the Angola Dome and focussed advection of productive coastal waters upwelled along the Namibian shelf over the Walvis Ridge Abutment Plateau. The decline in strength of upwelling since 1.7 Ma recorded by the sediments on the Abutment Plateau may reflect southward shift of the upwelling center to its present location near Lüderitz in response to the growth of northern hemisphere ice caps. (3) The desiccation of the Mediterranean drew the ITCZ to its maximum northern position and the reflooding corresponded to the time of change from maximum upwelling productivity coinciding with glacials to its coinciding with interglacials. During glacials, when NADW production was reduced, AAIW was replaced by nutrient-poor NAIW, so that the upwelled water did not become productive. Another possible cause of the general decline in productivity since 1.7 Ma is the that increased Mediterranean saline outflow has resulted in progressive expansion of NAIW into the South Atlantic during glacials.

    Description: The ultimate cause of the onset of glaciations remains elusive, but in the case of northem hemisphere glaciation it is probable that several factors acted in combination. General global cooling resulted from reduction of atmospheric C02 by weathering of silicate rocks exposed by erosion of late Cenozoic uplifts. Uplifts in south Asia, southwestern North America and Scandinavia occurred at distances appropriate for the generation of quasi-permanent Rossby waves in the atmosphere. The resulting winds, given suitable moisture sources, were favourable for causing large-scale precipitation at mid-latitudes on the northern continents. Moisture sources were provided by the closure of the Central American isthmus. Gulf Stream flow increased, carrying warm subtropical waters to high latitudes. The Denmark Strait deepened permitting greater outflow of deep water from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. The relative importance of each of these factors should be investigated by additional atmospheric and ocean climate model sensitivity studies.

    Description: Sixteen samples (588 individuals) of the Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus were collected by commercial vessels from Falkland and surrounding waters (42°06–51°17S) between February and May 1990 and subjected to starch gel electrophoresis. Levels of electrophoretically detectable generic variability and the extent of population differentiation were determined from allele frequencies at 25 enzyme-coding loci. Low levels of genetic variability were detected, with the overall proportion of polymorphic loci, P = 0.28, mean heterozygosities per locus, H1 = 0.011, and the average effective number of alleles, Nc = 1.23. Marked population differentiation was indicated by significant differences in allele frequency among samples, and unbalanced genotypic distributions with heterozygote deficits at most loci. Nei's mean genetic distances (D) and identities (I) ranged from 0.000 to 0.130 and 1.000 to 0.878, respectively, underlining the marked genetic divergence detected. Some evidence of microgeographic differentiation (between replicates within sites) was observed. Individuals collected from northerly limits of the sampled area (42: 06 S, 58:09 W) were most genetically distinct (I = 0.878−0.904), suggesting the existence of a hitherto unrecognised subspecies or species of Illex. Emphasis is placed on the need to delimit putative stock boundaries, and develop appropriate population models to ensure conservation of genetic resources.

    Description: The results of ichthyoplankton surveys carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Pesca (INAPE) in the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) in summer 1980 and the winters of 1980–1982 are presented. In addition, the results of joint research with INIDEP, the Argentine and Japan Fisheries Agency, on larvae, juveniles and adults of the short-finned squid Illex argentinus carried out in winter 1989 are given, as are data obtained during the joint sardine and anchovy recruitment project carried out by R.V. Meteor in November/December 1989. The short-finned squid Illex argentinus is the most important cephalopod resource of the area, and an extended fishery is carried out on the Patagonian shelf and in the proximity of the Falkland Islands. The fishing season in the AUCFZ, for pre-spawning and spawning animals, extends from early autumn to winter (March–August). Abundance of rhynchoteuthion larvae (417–485 larvae·10 m−2) was greatest in winter in surface temperatures of 12,1–16,9°C and surface salinities of 34,8 – 35,2 × 10−3. The distribution of the larvae is related to the western boundary of the Brazil Current and the convergence front.

    Description: In the austral summers of 1986 and 1988–1989, 51 southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) at Husvik, South Georgia (54°10′S; 36°43′W), were stomach lavaged after chemical immobilization. Only cephalopod remains were retrieved, including 1070 lower beaks that were identified and measured. In total these were estimated to represent a wet weight of 187.8 kg. Fourteen species of squid from 11 families and 2 species of octopod from 1 family were present. The most important species overall were the squids Psychroteuthis glacialis in terms of numerical abundance (33.7%) and Moroteuthis knipovitchi in terms of estimated biomass (31.2%). The remaining biomass was mainly comprised of the five large muscular squids, Kondakovia longimana (24.0%), P. glacialis (15.4%), Martialia hyadesi (11.2%), Alluroteuthis antarcticus (10.8%), and Gonatus antarcticus (3.6%). Larger seals of both sexes fed on a wider variety of cephalopod species than smaller seals, with large males taking the greatest diversity. Between the two summers of the study there were some changes in the relative importance of the various cephalopod species consumed; in particular, in 1988–1989 M. knipovitchi and M. hyadesi were less important and P. glacialis was more important. The taxa and size of cephalopods taken by southern elephant seals at South Georgia are almost identical to those taken by the grey-headed albatross (Diomedea chrysostoma), but the relative proportions are quite different. The biogeography of the cephalopods eaten suggests that southern elephant seals sampled at South Georgia do not forage to the north of the Antarctic Polar Front but probably travel southwards towards the Antarctic continent or Peninsula.

    Description: Samples of the squid Martialia hyadesi were collected aboard two Japanese squid-jigging vessels carrying out commercial fishing trials at the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone, north Scotia Sea, in February 1989. The dissected stomachs of 61 specimens were classified according to fullness and the contents were examined visually. Identifiable food items included fish sagittal otoliths, crustacean eyes, the lappets on euphausiid first antennule segments and cephalopod sucker rings. The most frequent items in the squid's diet were the myctophid fishes Krefftichthys anderssoni and Electrona carlsbergi, the euphausiid Euphausia superba and a hyperiid amphipod, probably Themisto gaudichaudi. A small proportion of the sample had been feeding cannibalistically. Total lengths of the fish prey were estimated from sagittal otolith size using published relationships. All fish were relatively small; 7 to 35% of squid mantle-length. However, it is possible that some heads of larger fish are discarded by the squid and so are not represented by otoliths in the stomach contents. Over the size range of squid in the sample there was no relationship between size of fish prey and size of squid. Similarly, when the squid sample was divided into groups according to prey categories: crustaceans, crustaceans+fish, fish, cephalopod, there was no evidence that dietary preference was related to squid size. The prevalence of copepod-feeding myctophids in the diet of this squid, which is itself a major prey item of some higher predators in the Scotia Sea, suggests that a previously unrecognised food chain: copepod-myctophid-M. hyadesi-higher predator, may be an important component of the Antarctic oceanic ecosystem.

    Description: Specimens of the squidAbralia veranyi were collected off the Bahamas in 1989. The bioluminescence of the ventral photophores was recorded on videotape at 11 to 12°C and 24°C, in conjunction with measurements of the spectral emission at the same temperatures. At 11 °C, the spectrum was unimodal, peaking at 490 nm with a narrow bandwidth. At the higher temperature a shoulder at about 440 nm appeared in the emission spectrum. The short, bright flashes from the subocular photophores had a broader bandwidth and a shorter wavelength emission maximum (475 nm) than that of the ventral photophores. Video recordings at the two temperatures showed no changes in either the identities of the luminescing photophores or their relative intensities. One structurally distinct type of photophore was not illuminated. We conclude that the observed spectral changes were produced within one group of photophores, and that recruitment of the unilluminated photophores would produce an additional spectral component, previously reported from another species ofAbralia (A. trigonura).

    Description: The infestation of Weddell seals and several fish species by the anisakid nematodes Contracaecum osculatum and C. radiatum was compared. Nematode numbers in Weddell seal stomachs ranged from 30 560 to 122 640. Third stage larvae from seals and fish were separated into a short and a long type. The short type was related to C. radiatum and the long type to C. osculatum. The short type was more abundant in pelagic fish species, whereas the long type prevailed in benthic fish species. Fish-feeding channichthyids Cryodraco antarcticus and Chionodraco myersi seemed to play an important role as paratenic hosts for the third stage larvae of both Contracaecum species. Different advantageous and detrimental features of a benthic versus a pelagic life cycle under high Antarctic ecological conditions are discussed. Varying abundance of the two nematode species in hosts may be controlled by differences in their life cycles, which follow either a pelagic or a benthic food web. Crucial importance is thus given to the local availability of pelagic versus benthic food resources for Weddell seals.

    Description: King Penguins are the second largest of all diving birds and share with their congener, Emperor Penguins, breeding habits strikingly different from other penguins. Our purpose was to determine the feeding behavior, energetics of foraging and the prey species, and compare these to other sympatric species of subantarctic divers. We determined: (1) general features of foraging behavior using time—depth recorders, velocity meters, and radio transmitters, (2) energetics by doubly labeled water, (3) food habits and energy content from stomach lavage samples, and (4) resting and swimming metabolic rate by oxygen consumption measurements. The average foraging cycle was ≈6 d, during which the mass gain of 30 birds was ≈2 kg. When at sea, the birds exhibit a marked pattern of shallow dives during the night, whereas deep dives of 〉100 m only occurred during the day. Maximum depth measured from 34 birds and 18 537 dives was 304 m, and maximum dive duration from 23 birds and 11 874 dives was 7.7 min. The frequency distribution of dive depth was bimodal, with few dives between 40 and 100 m. Overall, swim velocities when a bird was at sea averaged 2.1 m/s (N = 5), while descent and ascent rates of change in depth averaged 0.6 m/s for dives 〈60 m (N = 74) and 1.4 m/s for dives 〉150 m (N = 90). Night feeding dives occurred at a rate of ≈20 dives/h, and deep dives occurred at a rate of ≈5 dives/h. The energy consumption rate while resting ashore was 3.3 W/kg (N = 3) or 1.6 times the predicted standard metabolic rate (SMR). The average energy consumption rate while away from the colony was 10 W/kg (N = 8) or 4.6 x SMR, compared to 4.3 x SMR estimated from a time—energy budget. The latter value is based on an average metabolic rate of 4.2 W/kg for three birds while resting in 5°C water and 9.6 W/kg while swimming at 2 m/s, which was extrapolated from the average of three birds swimming at 1 m/s. The average energy intake based on 9 stomach content samples was nearly 24.6 kJ/g dry mass. The main prey by number are myctophid fish of the species Krefftichthys anderssoni and Electrona carlsbergi. It was concluded that: (1) feeding begins ≈28 km from the colony, (2) prey is pursued night and day through its vertical movements, (3) vertical distribution of the prey is reflected closely by diving habits of the birds, (4) deep—diving, for unknown reasons, is an important component of foraging success, (5) diving capacities of King Penguins are remarkable compared to other birds and many pinnipeds, and (6) calculated foraging energetics can be closely estimated from time—energy budgets.

    Description: The diving behaviour of 14 adult southern elephant seals was investigated using time depth recorders. Each of the seals performed some dives that were longer than its theoretical aerobic dive limit. Forty-four percent of all dives made by post-moult females exceeded the calculated limit compared with 7% of those made by postbreeding females and less than 1% of those made by adult males. The extended dives displayed characteristics that suggested that they were predominantly foraging dives, although some were apparently rest dives. Dives longer than the calculated aerobic limits often occurred in bouts; the longest consisted of 63 consecutive dives and lasted 2 days. Postmoult females performed longer bouts of extended dives than postbreeding females. Extended surface periods (longer than 30 min) were not related to the occurrence of extended dives or bouts of extended dives. The possible physiological mechanisms that permit such prolonged continuous dives are discussed. Southern elephant seals may increase the aerobic capacity of dives by lowering their metabolism to approximately 40% of the resting metabolic rate on long dives. There is substantial interseal variability in the methods used to cope with long dives. Some animals appear to use physiological strategies that allow them to prolong the time available to them at the bottom of a dive, while others use alternative strategies that may limit the time available at the bottom of their dives.

    Description: The concentrations of 11 heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) were measured in the tissues (digestive gland, branchial hearts, gills, digestive tract, kidney, genital tract, muscle, skin, shell) of the two cephalopods Eledone cirrhosa (d'Orb.) and Sepia officinalis (L.) collected from the French coast of the English Channel in October 1987. The tissues of both species displayed a similar pattern of heavy-metal accumulation: the digestive gland, branchial hearts and kidney were the major sites of concentration for all 11 metals; the digestive gland accumulated silver, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead and zinc, the branchial hearts high concentrations of copper, nickel and vanadium, and the kidney high concentrations of manganese, nickel and lead. The digestive gland, which constituted 6 to 10% of the whole-animal tissue, contained 〉80% of the total body burden of Ag, Cd and Co and from 40 to 80% of the total body burden of the other metals. The ratios between heavy metal concentrations in the digestive gland and those in the muscle separated the elements into three groups, those with a ratio ≤10 (Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn), those with a ratio 〉10 to 〈50 (Co, Cu, Fe), and those with a ratio ≥50 (Ag, Cd). The digestive gland of cephalopods (carnivorous molluscs whose age can be easily calculated with great accuracy) would seem to constitute a good potential indicator of heavy metal concentrations in the marine environment.

    Description: The domestic butterfish (Peprilus triacanthus) fishery off the Northeast USA has increased in importance in recent years, to the extent that the quantity allocated to foreign countries fishing within USA waters has been decreased to by-catch levels. This restriction resulted in closure of a portion of the foreign squid fishery in 1985, when the by-catch quota for butterfish was exceeded. This analysis is designed to determine co-occurrence between long-finned squid (Loligo pealei) and butterfish particularly in directed fisheries for each species with a view that areal, diel, and/or seasonal regulations of these fisheries may be feasible to reduce the potential adverse effects of high by-catch rates. Squid and butterfish exhibited high degrees of overlap in temperature and depth preferences as indicated by seasonal and spatial distribution data from research and fishery sources. Commercial fishery data, however, suggested that by-catch of butterfish in the directed squid fishery can be maintained at relatively low levels (〈=6%), when the fishery was prosecuted offshore during the winter. The domestic USA fishery, operating with effort directed at either species at various times of the year, has not been limited as to by-catch of either species. If a need develops, it is likely that seasonal and areal management measures could result in significant reductions in the by-catch of either species.

    Description: The accuracy of the tritiated water (HTO) and sodium-22 () turnover methods as estimators of dietary water and sodium intake was evaluated in emperor penguins fed separate diets of squid and fish. Emperor penguins assimilated 76.2% and 81.8% of available energy in the squid and fish diets, respectively. Both isotopes had equilibrated with body water and exchangeable sodium pools by 2 h after intramuscular injection. The tritium method yielded reliable results after blood isotope levels had declined by 35%. On average the tritium method underestimated water intake by 2.9%, with a range of-10.3% to + 11.1%. The method underestimated Na intake on average by 15.9% with the errors among individuals ranging from -37.2% to -1.8%. Discrepancies with turnover were sign ficantly greater with the squid diet than the fish diet. The results confirm the reliability of the tritium method as an estimator of food consumption by free-living emperor penguins (provided seawater and freshwater ingestion is known) and support the adoption of the method to derive an approximation of seawater intake by tritiated emperor penguin chicks and by tritiated adults on foraging trips of short duration.

At Auster a total of 10 963 pairs produced about 6350 fledglings for a breeding success of 58%. At Taylor Glacier about 2900 pairs raised 1774 fledglings for a breeding success of 61%. Fledglings left Taylor Glacier over a period of 33 days at a mean mass of 10.56 kg.

    Description: Plgments are frequently used as biomarkers to study the fate of primary producers in the food web. We evaluated the effectiveness of pigment analysis in the giant aquatic isopod Saduna entomon, an important link in the food chain of the Baltic Sea. Specimens were collected on a transect across Puck Bay (Gulf of Gdansk, Poland) at stations comprising different sedimentary conditions and varying supply of micro- and macroalgal material. In laboratory experiments S. entomon was fed different kinds of prey. Different marker coinbinations were found in the intestlnal tissue, resulting from predation on herbivorous and carnivorous species. Analyses of field samples revealed that S. entomon, living in the sedlment surface, ingests freshly sedimented phytoplankton as well as plant detritus ß-carotene and the xanthophyll echinenone were found in the carapax and gonads, supporting the view that these substances are assimilated and servve as antioxidant protection of lipids and other macromolecules.

    Description: Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) carrying dummy instruments were used to determine field metabolic rates using double-labelled water. All penguins injected with double-labelled water showed a marked loss of body mass (-4.5%) during the period of the experiments (20–131 h), irrespective of the time of the breeding season. Total body water averaged 57.3% and water flux estimates of field metabolic rates correlated with double-labelled water estimates of field metabolic rate (r2=0.68), indicating that Adélie penguins do not ingest significant amounts of sea water. Brooding Adélie penguins had a mean field metabolic rate of 10.1 W·kg-1 and at sea a field metabolic rate of 13.3 W·kg-1, both of which compare well with previously published estimates based on time/activity budgets and respirometry. Mean field metabolic rate in penguins with crèching chicks was 14.1 W·kg-1, and the birds spent 65 h absent from the nest as opposed to previous estimates of 7.1 W·kg-1 and 21 h. The effects of weather, disturbance and manipulation on the behaviour and field metabolic rate of penguins late in the breeding season are discussed. Adélie penguins (crèching chicks) equipped with externally attached instruments spent more time absent from the nest than noninstrumented controls (76 vs 54 h), but had a lower field metabolic rate.

    Description: This paper presents an idea on the possible structuring effect of hex actinellids on Antarctic sponge associations. To this end, information derived from underwater photography performed on the eastern Weddell Sea shelf is reported and original trawl data are presented. Underwater photography shows the existence of different sponge associations; species poor associations are connected to soft bottom, species rich associations exist on substrates characterized by bryozoan debris and especially sponge spicule mats. The trawl. catches show differences in the population structure of a hexactinellid sponge, Rassella racovitzae Topsent at two stations, distinguishable from each other by substrate structure. On average small and therefore probably young specimens were found on bryozoan debris, while a population with larger and probably older specimens was found on solid hexactinellid spicule mats. These observations form the basis for the hypothesis that hexactinellid sponges are a major biological structuring agent for Antarctic sponge associations; they colonize soft substrate and bryozoan debris dominated areas and subsequently change the quality of the substrate by spicule deposition. The ensuing spicule mats are a suitable settling ground for a large number of demosponge species dependent on hard substrates. Mass occurrences of hexactinellids are also found in areas other than Antarctica. The phenomenon recognized in the Weddell Sea probably occurs more widely spread.

    Description: An introduction to the structure of the Antarctic sponge fauna is given with special reference to the position of the hexactinellida. The history of the taxon Hexactinellida is shortly summarized and the circumstances leading to the insatisfactory phylogenetic and taxonomic knowledge on the group in general are explained. Among the most important problems are discrepancies between the taxonomic criteria used by palaeontologists and neontologists respectively and the scanty availability of specimens. While predominantly confined to the deep sea in most parts of the world, hexactinellids in the Antarctic occur in shallow water as well. Most Antarctic hexactinellids have a circumpolar distribution and they dominate many benthic ecosystems in terms of abundance and biomass. At least three different mechanisms by which hexactinellids influence their environment are recognized today: 1. The large hexactinellids add a three-dimensional structure to a predominantly flat environment. 2. They serve as substrate and living space for a variety of associated fauna. 3. After their death their skeletons persist in the habitat; this can lead to profound changes in the structure of the benthic community. The biology of the species Rossel/a racovitzae, occurring in two different morphological variants with different biology is presented as an example for the need for further taxonomic work on Antarctic hexactinellids.

    Description: A method is proposed for cloud detection over sea using a single infrared channel of a high spatial resolution satellite radiometer. The method combines a spatial coherence test and an absolute threshold test for the temperature field. The threshold for the second test is automatically determined by a histogram analysis of data which were preselected by the coherence test. The coherence test used differs from the classical standard deviation test in the way of the test value computation: the weight of the pixel to be investigated is increased. A simulation shows that under conditions of low cloud cover this makes the proposed coherence test more sensitive than the standard deviation test. When applied to real data the test was also found to be very sensitive compared with visible and IR threshold tests. Cloud cover obtained by the whole method is finally compared with that resulting from the visible and IR histogram analysis procedure of Phulpin et al. This comparison indicates a high reliability of the proposed method.

    Description: Routine oxygen consumption of turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, was determined in relation to temperature, salinity, body wet weight, and time of day. The highest routine oxygen consumption rates measured roughly followed a arabolic curve over the temperature range tested (8 to 24°C). The lowest rates showed a more linear refationship over the same temperature range. It is argued that lowest rates correspond to the standard oxygen consumption. Between 16 and 19°C, routine oxygen consumption reached a maximum. It is suggested that these temperatures correspond to the preferred ternerature of the species and are within the range of optimum temperature for growth of specimens weigkng about 100 g. Salinity effect on oxygen consumption rates was studied in five groups acclimated over 4 weeks to 8, 15, 22, 29, and 35%. salinity. Routine oxygen consumption rates were lowest at 8% salinity with no significant differences in higher acclimation salinities. Routine respiration of turbots showed conspicuous daily fluctuations. During spring, summer, and autumn, oxygen Consumption was higher during morning hours and at night. In winter, higher rates were measured only once (during morning and early afternoon). The relationship between routine oxygen consumption and body weight of turbots followed an exponential function with a slope of 0.7, which was lower compared to the slope of 0.8 usually given for roundfish-species.

In experiments with fluorescent microparticles, all particles smaller than 250 pm were ingested regardless of thelr chemical composition. Comparisons of sediment, feeding pellets and faeces showed that U. tangeri feeds primarily on microalgae which are completely extracted from the sediment. It also consumes vascular macrophytes (Arthrocnemum spp.), macroalgae, detritus and fish carcasses.

    Description: North Atlantic air-sea heat and freshwater flux data from several sources are used to estimate the conversion rate of water from one density to another throughout the range of sea surface density. This cross-isopycnal mass flux varies greatly over the ocean, with a maximum of 32.2 × 106 m3 s−1 at σ = 26.1 kg m−3 (toward greater densities) and a minimum of −7.6 × 106 m3 s−1 (toward lesser densities) at σ = 23.0 kg m−3. The air-sea fluxes force water to accumulate in three density bands: one at the lowest sea surface densities generated by heating; one centered near the density of subtropical mode water; and one spanning subpolar mode water densities. The transfer of water to the highest and lowest densities is balanced by mixing, which returns water to the middle density range, and also by boundary sources or sinks. Integrating the cross-isopycnal flux over all densities gives an annual average sinking of about 9 × 1O6 m3 s−1, which presumably escapes across the equator and must be balanced by a similar inflow. Comparison with estimates from tracer studies suggests that the renewal of tracer characteristics at a given density may occur without the existence of an annual average mass source at that density, because along- and cross-isopycnal mixing can renew a tracer without supplying mass.

    Description: Haplogloia andersonii (Farlow) Levring is an anti-tropical species that occurs on cold and warm-temperate Pacific coasts of both Americas. In its habit it resembles the subantarctic species Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton. Culture studies show that the species differ in morphology and ecophysiology of their microscopic gametophytes and in gamete behavior. Details of sporophyte anatomy are presented that also allow the distinction of field plants. In South America, H. andersonii occurs only on the Pacific coast, from central Perú (14°S) to southern Chile (50°S). Chordaria linearis occurs on the Pacific coast from Chiloé Island (43°S) to Cape Horn (56°S). In the shared area the species may co-occur. On the Atlantic coast, C. linearis was newly collected at a locality in northern Patagonia (41°S). In addition, C. linearis occurs in Antarctica. Haplogloia moniliformis Richer, recently described from Macquarie Island, is probably synonymous with Chordaria linearis.

    Description: We examined the temperature tolerance of microscopic phases from geographically disjunct isolates of eight species or closely related, putatively conspecific taxa of temperate brown algae with disjunct distributions. Maximum within-taxon differences were small and ranged from 1.6° to 4.3° C. Desmarestia aculeata and Sphaerotrichia divaricata, both with northern hemisphere amphioceanic distributions, showed little or no significant intraspecific variation between the mean upper survival limits (USL) of Atlantic and Pacific strains (δUSL ≤ 1.4°C), which would agree with a relatively recent separation of the respective populations. Among the plants with bipolar distributions, there was likewise very little difference (δUSL 0–1.1°C) between northern and southern hemisphere strains in Striaria attenuata and in the species pair Desmarestia viridis/D. willii. In Desmarestia ligulata, and in the species pairs Desmarestia firma/D. munda, Dictyosiphon foeniculaceus/D. hirsutus, and Scytothamnus australis/Scytothamnus sp., significant differences occurred, which indicate longer divergence times. δUSL in these cases ranged from 1.7° to 2.7°C, without overlap between strains from the northern and southern hemispheres. All species that passed the equator during cooler epochs had a USL of 26–27°C, at least in some geographical isolates. The NE Asian kelp Undaria pinnatifida, which passed the equator in recent times, had a USL of 29.6°C. We hypothesize that the mechanism of spreading in the amphipolar species studied was migration of vegetative microthalli. The more unlikely alternative hypothesis of continuous populations through the tropics during a cooler epoch would imply a drop in seawater temperatures to approximately 20° C in summer and 15° C in winter, which is not supported by paleoclimatic evidence.

    Description: The effect of spray droplets in the marine surface layer on evaporation is considered. Independent evidence from energy constraints, from visibility and from sea salt content of air is used. The estimation shows that, except perhaps for hurricane wind strength, the increase of total evaporation from evaporating droplets is negligible.     Description: A tephrochronology of the past 5 Ma is constructed based on ash layers contained in Neogene sediments drilled at ODP Leg 121 Site 758 on the northern Ninetyeast Ridge. More than two hundred tephra layers occur in the uppermost 80 m of cores, ranging in thickness from a few millimeters to 34 cm. Seventeen tephra layers, at least one cm thick, were sampled and analyzed for major elements. Ages for the ash layers are estimated from the paleomagnetic and 8180 chronostratigraphies and range from 75,000 ka to more than 5 Ma. The ash layers comprise about 1. 7% by volume of the sediments recovered in the first 72 meters. Median grain size of the ashes is about 75 μm with a maximum of 150 μm. The ash consists of rhyolitic bubble junction and pumice glass shards. Bubble wall shards dominate in the ashes (70%-90%), with blocky and platy shards of even proportions (10%-30%). The layers are always less than 2% crystals by volume, with plagioclase and alkali feldspar present in nearly every layer. Biotite occurs only in the thickest layers. Major element compositions of the glass shards reflect fractionation trends mainly by feldspar crystallization. Three chemical groups of glass compositions suggest several distinct magmatic systems. Dating by 8180 and paleomagnetic reversals suggests that major marine ash-layer-producing eruptions (marine tephra layers 〉 1 cm in thickness) occur roughly every ca. 414,000 years correlating well with land-based stratigraphic correlations and dates of Pleistocene Sumatran tuffs (375,000 yr average eruptive interval). Residence times of the magmatic systems defined by geochemical trends are 1.6 Ma, 2.5 Ma, and 1.4 Ma. The longest time interval starts with the least differentiated magma. The Sunda Arc, specifically Sumatra, is inferred to be the source region for the ashes. Four of the five youngest ash layers recovered correlate in time and in major element chemistry to ashes observed on land at the Toba caldera.
