    Beschreibung: The new mineral sbacchiite (IMA 2017-097), Ca2AlF7, was found in a fossil fumarole (1944 eruption, T ! 80 !C) at the rim of the crater of the Vesuvius volcano, Napoli, Italy, associated with gearsksutite, usovite, creedite and opal. It forms elongated crystals up to about 60 lm in length. On the basis of powder X-ray diffraction data and chemical analysis, the mineral was recognized to be identical to the corresponding synthetic phase. Crystals are transparent or translucent and colourless, with vitreous lustre and white streak. The tenacity is brittle. The measured density is 3.08(2) g/cm3, the calculated density is 3.116 g/cm3. The empirical formula, (based on 10 atoms per formula unit, apfu) is Ca2.02Mg0.03Al0.99F6.97. Sbacchiite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a = 7.665(2), b = 6.993(1), c = 9.566(2) Å, V = 512.2(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 3.840(45)(200), 3.563(85)(201), 3.499(100)(020), 2.899(55)(013), 2.750(30)(212), 2.281(20)(104), 2.255(52)(302) and 2.173(36)(131). The structure was refined to R = 0.0479 for 457 reflections with I 〉 2r(I). The asymmetric unit contains one Al3+ and two independent Ca2+ cations and five fluorine anions. Aluminium is octahedrally coordinated by six fluorine atoms; the arrangement of F around the 7-coordinated Ca(1) conforms to a distorted pentagonal bipyramid and that around Ca(2) to a very distorted polyhedron (in 7 + 1 coordination). All the fluorine atoms are threefold coordinated. The structure framework shows ‘‘isolated’’ [AlF6] octahedra, whereas the coordination polyhedra around Ca are linked by common edges [sequence: Ca(1)–Ca(2)– Ca(1). . .] along [010] and the same holds for the connection along [001]. Along [100], however, only the pentagonal bipyramids around Ca(1) are connected by bridging corners.

    Beschreibung: Capranicaite, ideally (K,square)(Ca,Na)Al(4)B(4)Si(2)O(18), is a new inosilicate mineral from the Vico volcanic complex collected at Capranica, Viterbo Province, Latium, Italy. It occurs in miarolitic cavities of a feldspathoid-bearing syenite ejectum and formed by late-stage metasomatic processes related to the activity of the Vico volcano.

    Beschreibung: Several aspects of the ecology of Jameson’s green mamba Dendroaspis jamesoni jamesoni (Traill, 1843), a large-sized arboreal elapid snake, are studied in southern Nigeria. This species 18 common and widespread in the region studied. On the basis of the analysis of both the habitats of capture of the various specimens and the results of a logistical regression model, it seems that this species inhabits a wide variety of habitats (including secondary forest patches and the plantation-forest mosaic), and that its local distribution is not influenced by the Presence of any macrohabitat parameter. Green mambas were observed both in the dry and in the wet season, without any statistical bias toward a particular season. Adult sex-ratio was aPproximately 1 : 1. Males were significantly longer than females. All adult mamba dietary records involved warm-blooded prey (mainly birds), whereas young mambas fed also upon lizards and toads. Nearly all the prey eaten by adult mambas were arboreal, and thus there was no support for the recent hypothesis that adult mambas develop an orientation to forage on terrestrial rodents. Male-male combats and matings were observed in December, January, and February (dry season), and gravid females were collected in April, May, and June (wet season). Females produced 7-16 eggs (mean 10.9), and litter size was Positively correlated with maternal length.

    Beschreibung: Pitcher plants of the family Nepenthaceae are vines or subscandent shrubs which produce modified leaf organs that in most species serve to attract, trap, retain and digest animals for nutritional benefit. The sole genus within the family, Nepenthes, is abundant and diverse in Malesia. Previous taxonomic treatments of Nepenthes have relied almost entirely on the morphological features of the plants, with characteristics of the pitchers, inflorescences, leaf blades and indumentum being the most informative. Recent ecological research demonstrates that unique morphological characteristics and trap geometries provide useful taxonomic information, but this is often lost or obscured when specimens are prepared for herbaria by pressing them. In this paper, we demonstrate the value of ecological information in distinguishing between controversial montane Bornean taxa and provide a revised protocol for the collection and preparation of Nepenthes specimens, which is designed to maximise the amount of ecological information retained in herbarium material.

    Beschreibung: The ecology of the water snake, Grayia smythii (Reptilia: Colubridae) occurring in a seasonal rainforest swamp of the Niger Delta (southern Nigeria) was investigated between December 1998 and March 2000. Females and males were similar in body sizes (SVL) and head sizes, but males had tails significantly longer than females. The diet was constituted only by frogs and fish. The major prey type was Xenopus tropicalis, followed by Tilapia sp. and Clarias sp. Adult sex-ratio was 1:1. Sloughing of skin and ovipositions occurred in dry season, in the humid enclosure of buttress roots amongst leaf litters. Fecundity ranged from 8 to 14 eggs per female, with a mean of 10 eggs (SD = 1.8). The smallest gravid female was 78.2 cm SVL. Eggs were laid in batches of three to four eggs at a site, in at least two to three different sites. The size of the eggs averaged 3.1 cm in length, 2.1 cm in width, and had a fresh weight ranging from 18,2 to 22.1 g. Maternal size influenced significantly the number of eggs produced by female, but not their average size. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between number of eggs and mean egg size. Predators of this snake at the study area were herons and fishermen.

    Beschreibung: Three species of hinge-back tortoises ( (Kinixys belliana nogueyi, Kinixys erosa, Kinixys homeana) are found in simpatry in the rainforests of the Niger Delta, southern Nigeria (west Africa). The seasonal activity patterns and food habits of these tortoises are studied in the present paper. K. erosa and K. homeana have similar activity patterns, with peaks occurring during the wet season. Kinixys belliana was found only during the wet months. There was no evidence of any specific effect of humidity of the air on their activity intensity, and it seems likely that, more than absolute values of air humidity, the crucial factor to force tortoises into high activity is the sudden change between dry days and very wet days at the onset of the rainy season (end of March-early April). K. homeana was significantly more active in the early phase of the wet season. Common items, which were consumed by all three predator species, were: plant matters, fruits and berries, fungi, Oligochaeta, and Gastropoda Pulmonata, whereas Araneidae were also consumed by all species, but much more rarely. Common prey items, which were consumed by K. homeana and not by K. erosa were: Coleoptera larvae, Dermaptera, and termites. K. homeana appeared more generalist than K. erosa, and the respective diets diverged considerably both in dry and in wet seasons. On the other hand, the diets of K. erosa and K. belliana were more similar (at least in wet season).

    Beschreibung: This project was carried out from November 2008 for about two years. Seven laboratories of the research center including: Chromatography, Instrumental Analysis, Aquatic zoology, Sample preparation, Histology, Plankton and Benthos were selected for the accreditation. The quality manual of the test laboratories was written following the general requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. During the establishment of the system standardization of the test methods, calibration of the equipment, test methods validation, uncertainty estimation of measurement and update and improvement of physical conditions of the laboratories were performed. The technical and quality management competence of the laboratories were evaluated by the auditors from DGA (the German Accreditation System for Testing Laboratories), which is signatory of ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation). The laboratories officially accredited by DGA, after the successful completion of the accreditation process (including implementation of corrective actions for the detected nonconformities). The accreditation is valid from 2009-11-12 to 2014-11-11. Production of reliable results of the test methods from national and international scientific organizations' point of view as well as facilitation in development of bilateral and multilateral relations with them can be considered as the advantages of the system establishment. Moreover, exchange of the relevant scientific information and experiences among the researchers will be facilitated.

    Beschreibung: A coastal area is a confluence of land and marine ecosystems and includes the independent biological, ecological, and geological area. Increasing pressure on these areas can decrease the quality of marine habitats, and can even lead to the loss of sensitive habitats (Lund and Wilbur, 2007). In this regard, a “biotope” has been suggested as the most informative operational unit for research and management (Costello, 2009). These biotopes, however, have been specified by the dominant species; they depend on the seabed, they are stable, and sometimes are used synonymously with the word ecology (Madden et al., 2008).

    Beschreibung: The present work deals with the study of fish larvae of coral reef fishes in the Red Sea (Hurghada). It was aimed to study the spatial and temporal variations of fish larvae for management purposes. Sampling stations were chosen at Marina, Sheraton, Magawish and Arabia. The samples were taken monthly throughout the period of the study from August 2014 to July 2015 using plankton nets of different mesh sizes (150, 350, and 500 micron). The highest density of larvae was observed in July when 841 larvae 1000m-3 were collected whereas, the lowest density was recorded in March and October at 11 1000m-3. The highest number of species was recorded in Sheraton with 28 species followed by Magawish with 27 species recorded followed by Marina with 26 species recorded while the lowest was recorded in Arabia with 25 species. Concentration of larvae was significantly different between months and sites. There was a significant difference in the number of species between months but not between stations. Larvae of mullid fish were abundant in summer while larvae of clupeids were observed all year round.
