    Description: We describe the setting up of the first earthquake forecasting experiment for Italy within the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP). CSEP conducts rigorous and truly prospective forecast experiments for different tectonic environments in several forecast testing centers around the globe; forecasts are issued for a future period and also tested only against future observations to avoid any possible bias. As such, experiments need to be completely defined. This includes exact definitions of the testing area, of learning data for the forecast models, and of observation data against which forecasts will be tested to evaluate their performance. Here we present the rules, as taken from the Regional Earthquake Likelihood Models experiment and extended or changed for the Italian experiment. We also present characterizations of learning and observational catalogs that describe the completeness of these catalogs and illuminate inhomogeneities of magnitudes between these catalogs. A particular focus lies on the stability of earthquake recordings of the observational network. These catalog investigations provide guidance for CSEP modelers for developing earthquakes forecasts for submission to the forecast experiment in Italy.

    Description: Since 2004, a continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) network has been operated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) to investigate active tectonic processes in Italy and the surrounding regions, which are still largely debated. This important infrastructure is known as Rete Integrata Nazionale GPS (RING) network, and it consists of about 130 stations that are deployed all over Italy. The development and realization of a stable GPS monumentation, its integration with seismological instruments, and the choice of both satellite and internet data transmission, make this network one of the most innovative and reliable CGPS networks in the world. The technologically advanced development of the RING network has been accompanied by the development of different data processing strategies, which are mainly dependent on the use of different GPS analysis software. The different software-related solutions are here compared at different scales for this large network, and the consistency is evaluated and quantified within an RMS value of 0.3 mm/yr.

    Description: In this work we give information on the characteristics of the Italian National Seismic Network and on the seismicity and main seismic sequences in Italy during 2008. During that year the Italian National Seismic Network localized 6969 events in Italy and neighboring areas, with an apparent minimum magnitude of completeness ML of 2.1. The entire Italian Seismic Bulletin 2008 was obtained using signals from 279 stations belonging to the INGV Italian National Seismic Network and to other local and regional networks, all with real-time connection to the Centro Nazionale Terremoti in Rome. Some evidences confirm the presence of a certain percentage of events due to anthropic activity (explosions), erroneously interpreted as earthquakes of lowmagnitude.We identify 14 areas with the presence of explosions due to surfacemining activity, generating events with ML not exceeding 2.2.
