Description: Seven species of Tubificidae are recorded from the Canary Islands, viz. Heterodrilus amplus n. sp., Coralliodrilus leviatriatus Erséus, 1979, Limnodriloides agnes Hrabĕ, 1967, L. janstocki n. sp., Aktedrilus cuneus Erséus, 1984, A. parvithecatus (Erséus, 1978), and Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774); the two latter taxa are reported also from the Cabo Verde Islands. All taxa except T. tubifex are marine and there is no evidence of endemism in the freshwater oligochaete fauna of these islands. Heterodritus amplus has short, spindle-shaped, heavily muscular atria; they are morphologically unique within the genus. Limnodriloides janstocki has modified spermathecal setae; it is distinguished from similar species by its long atrial ducts and deep, elaborate copulatory sacs.

Description: Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo- Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely \xe2\x80\x9csimplex\xe2\x80\x9d- like species (with true sanidasters), and \xe2\x80\x9csarasinorum\xe2\x80\x9d-like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the \xe2\x80\x9csarasinorum\xe2\x80\x9d species group. A key to the West Atlantic species of Asteropus is provided. The family allocation of Asteropus and associated genera in the Coppatiidae Topsent, 1898 is discussed, with the conclusion that the family is undoubtedly a polyphyletic assemblage related to various astrophorid groups (Hooper, 1986; Van Soest, 1991).

Description: During the Amsterdam Expedition to Ascension Island in 1989 eighteen species of polychaetes were collected, fifteen of which were already known to science. One could not be identified to species level and two were new to science: Aricidea (Aedicira) ascensionensis n. sp. and Notodasus arenicola n. sp. Four of the known species are widely distributed, three are circumtropicalsubtropical and one has a tropical-subtropical distribution in the Pacific and in the Atlantic Ocean. Another species is recorded from different regions in the Atlantic Ocean. The rest of the species were \xe2\x80\x93 until now \xe2\x80\x93 only known from their type localities, viz. West Indies, Angola, Persian Gulf, Galapagos Islands, and South Shetland Islands.

Description: From June till December 1987 an inventory of the excavating sponges of the Santa Marta area, Colombian Caribbean, was made by scuba diving to depths not exceeding 18 m. Sixteen species were recorded and compared morphologically, using spicule sizes, papillae shapes, and excavation characteristics. Four littleknown species are fully described and illustrated by submarine color photographs in situ. One appears to be a new species: Axinyssa flavolivescens, belonging to a genus not known to excavate so far. The other three species could not be identified with certainty: Aka \xc3\xa4ff. xamaycaensis, Aka aff. brevitubulata, and Cliona aff. flavifodina. A key to the excavating sponges of the area studied is provided.

Description: The present paper deals with an important Danish paper on the Polyplacophora, published in 1797 by Lorentz Spengler: Udf\xc3\xb6rlig Beskrivelse over det mangeskallede Konkylie-Slaegt, af Linnaeus kaldet Chiton; med endeel nye Arter og Varieteter. -Skrivter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet, 4e Bind, Ie Hefte, VI: 62-103, Tab. VI (Ki\xc3\xb6benhavn). In order to make this historical paper accessible to students of the group, a translation (by Dr J. Knudsen, with the assistance of the late Mrs A. Volsoe) of the original 18th century Danish text into modern English is here presented. A considerable part of the material in the "Museo Spengleriano", on which Spengler based his descriptions, is still extant, being held now in the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. The translated description of every species and/or variety is followed by annotations in a smaller font (by P. Kaas) on the available specimens, including a discussion on their current taxonomic status. Spengler described 27 species and 10 varieties of chitons. He introduced 16 new taxa, of which 6 names are still valid.

The three lepidostomatid species previously known from Sulawesi (Neboiss 1991) are removed from Goerodes and transferred to Lepidostoma. Also, the female of Lepidostoma xylochos (Neboiss) is described for the first time.

Description: The viridis group is proposed for a supposedly monophyletic group of seven New Guinean species of the cicada genus Baeturia St\xc3\xa5l, 1866. Three species (B. brongersmai Bl\xc3\xb6te, B. rufula Bl\xc3\xb6te, and B. viridis Bl\xc3\xb6te) are redescribed and four species (B. furcillata, B. karkarensis, B. lorentzi, and B. turgida) are described as new to science. A key to the males is provided. The phylogenetic position of the viridis group within the genus Baeturia is discussed. The distribution of shared characters suggests a subdivision of the group into two subgroups. One subgroup is restricted to southern and western Irian Jaya, while the other is distributed along the coastal mountain ranges of northern New Guinea, including Karkar Island.

Description: SLUYS, R., 1992. Synopsis of the freshwater triclads of the Caribbean (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Paludicola). Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 71, Amsterdam, 1992: 1-23. An account is given of the five species of freshwater triclads which are known from the Caribbean region, including taxonomic descriptions, karyological, ecological, and biogeographic information, supplemented with remarks on observations of previous workers and comparisons with similar species. Records of unidentified specimens are summarized. Caribbean freshwater planarians belong to the genus Girardia; the phylogenetic relationships within this genus remain to be resolved. It is argued that present distributional patterns in Caribbean Girardia\xe2\x80\x99s may be the result of vicariance caused by a changing geology.

Description: Jean Nicolas S\xc3\xa9bastien Allamand (1713\xe2\x80\x941787), working in Holland, wrote 41 articles about mammals which were not, or only insufficiently, treated by the Count of Buffon in his Histoire naturelle. Allamand\xe2\x80\x99s contributions first appeared between 1769 and 1781 in various volumes of a French edition of the Histoire naturelle published by J.H. Schneider in Amsterdam. These additional articles are analysed to recognize the sources available to Allamand. The new information was mainly derived from animals seen at fairs in Holland, at the inn Blauw Jan in Amsterdam, in the menagerie and museum of Stadholder Willem V near The Hague, in the museum of the University of Leiden, and from observations made in South Africa by R.J. Gordon.

Four species are new to science: A. lagenaria, Ammothella omanensis, Achelia boschi, and Pycnogonum moolenbeeki. Since up to now no littoral Pycnogonida have been recorded from the Arabian peninsula, all other species are new to this region, with the exception of one which was recorded from deeper waters off Oman before.
