    Description / Table of Contents: This Atlas and accompanying CD-ROM contains oceanographic data collected by the scientific specialists of the Academy of Sciences, Ministery of Fisheries, and the Hydrometeorological Service of Russia in the Sea of Azov and the adjacent part of the Black Sea during 1913 - 2004. Monthly data distribution plots are provided for each year. Monthly climatic maps of temperature and salinity at the sea surface and depth levels of 5 and 10 meters are computed using opjective analysis. Intra-annual variability of temperature and salinity of the Sea of Azov is discussed with respect to the quality control of the primary data. The Atlas also includes, in electronic format, selected copies of rare books and articles about the history of the Sea of Azov exploration and climate studies as well as photos, which provide information about the people and environment of this region.

    Description / Table of Contents: Lithological, faunal, radiocarbon and amino acid data are presented for ten new occurences of in situ or redeposited pre-Holocene marine material in western Greenland, and further data on four previously described ones, bringing the total known occurences to 22 - 23. The new and older data suggest that this material dates from a number of periods of marine inundation from the Early to Late Quaternary, the exact number being uncertain. A succession of marine events are designated for two regions of western Greenland. From the occurence of the Chlamys islandica - Mytilus edulis faunal assemblage the subarctic West Greenland Current is considered to have existed during several of these marine events of different age.

Dezember 1982 wurde das Eis brechende Forschungs- und Versorgungsschiff POLARSTERN nach nur 15 Monaten Bauzeit – bei Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel und Werft Nobiskrug in Rendsburg – in Dienst gestellt. Inzwischen – 25 Jahre ununterbrochen für die Wissenschaft im harten Einsatz in den schwierigen Fahrtgebieten der Arktis und Antarktis – ist POLARSTERN eine Erfolgsgeschichte für die deutsche Meeres- und Polarforschung. Eigens als multidisziplinäres Forschungsschiff für den Einsatz speziell im Packeis der Arktis und Antarktis gebaut und eingerichtet als schwimmendes Forschungsinstitut, hat die POLARSTERN gehalten, was man sich von ihr versprochen hat: Sie ist immer noch das weltweit leistungsfähigste Polarforschungsschiff und damit auch das wichtigste Großgerät der deutschen Polarforschung, die auf dieser Basis weltweit beachtete Ergebnisse erzielt hat. Betrieben wird die POLARSTERN von der Stiftung Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI) in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (HGF) in enger Abstimmung und Zusammenarbeit mit Forschergruppen aus Universitäten und anderen Forschungsinstituten. POLARSTERN hat für die Meeres- und Polarforschung eine Vielzahl von Beiträgen geliefert, um die Polargebiete als sehr empfindliche Schlüsselgebiete der globalen Klimaentwicklung zu erkennen. Es wird erwartet, dass sich Effekte des globalen Klimawandels hier frühzeitiger als in anderen Regionen und besonders intensiv auswirken. Das Buch gibt in zahlreichen Beiträgen einen Überblick über das Schiff und seine technischen Besonderheiten sowie die wissenschaftlichen Labors. Es vermittelt einen Einblick in das Leben und Arbeiten an Bord und in den Verlauf der komplexen, multidisziplinären Forschungsarbeiten. In einer thematisch breiten Auswahl berichten Expeditionsteilnehmer von ihren Forschungsergebnissen aus den atlantischen Sektoren von Arktis und Antarktis.

Sie gehört zur unmittelbaren Umwelt der meisten Lebewesen (Mensch, Tier, Pflanzenwelt) und erhält dadurch und durch viele ihr eigene Prozesse und Eigenschaften eine besondere Bedeutung. Deshalb hat sich auch ein eigenes Teilgebiet der Meteorologie, die Grenzschicht-Meteorologie, entwickelt. Dieses Buch stellt die wesentlichen Grundlagen dieser Disziplin zusammen und erläutert sie. Dabei stehen einerseits physikalische Gesetze der Hydrodynamik (z. B. der Turbulenz) und der Thermodynamik, andererseits die stark interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Mikrometeorologie bzw. Mikroklimatologie im Vordergrund des Interesses. Dieses Buch möchte Leser ansprechen, die an der Meteorologie und vor allem an der bodennahen Atmosphäre interessiert sind. Darüber hinaus wendet es sich an alle, die sich mit der Wechselwirkung zwischen Erdoberfläche und Atmosphäre auseinandersetzen, z. B. an Geographen, Bodenkundler und Pflanzenökologen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The periglacial environment, Third Edition, provides an authoritative overview of the world's cold, non-glacial environments. Emphasis is placed upon the North American and Eurasian polar lowlands. Examples are also drawn from Antarctica, the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau, and the northern mid-latitudes. [...] The Third Edition continues to be a personal interpretation of the frost-induced conditions, geomorphic processes, and landforms that typify periglacial environments. The text is divided into four parts. Part One discusses the periglacial concept and its interactions with geomorphology, geocryology and Quaternary science. It also outlines the range and variability of periglacial climates and the degree to which landscapes are in geomorphic equilibrium with prevailing periglacial conditions. Part Two describes present-day terrain that is either underlain by permafrost or experiencing intense frost action. The roles played by cryogenic weathering, ground ice, mass wasting, running water, wind action, snow and ice, and coastal processes are systematically analysed. Part Three summarizes evidence for the existence of periglacial conditions during the cold periods of the Pleistocene. Special reference is made to the mid-latitudes of Europe and North America. Part Four illustrates the geotechnical problems associated with human activity and resource development in periglacial environments, and discusses the potential impact of global climate change in the northern high latitudes.
