    Description: Tensegrity mechanisms (TM) are well-appraised for their compliance and lightweight, making their design theory a hot research topic recently. However, due to unconstrained DOFs, the design and analysis of TMs are generally more complicated than traditional mechanisms composed of rigid links and joints. A compact 3-DOF tensegrity manipulator is introduced and an advanced two-step kinematic modeling method is proposed in this paper. This method is first assumed that bars and cables are rigid to estimate the equilibrium state using the energy-based method. Then, the flexibility of bars and cables is considered, and the force density method equations are solved utilizing the equilibrium state obtained by the previous step as the initial guess of iteration for fast computation. Based on the two-step method, the performances of the TM, such as workspace, manipulability, potential energy, and stiffness, are analyzed. Thereafter, the installation position and size of the manipulator are optimized under the workspace constraint. In the optimization process, discrete points on the prescribed task workspace contour are used to simplify the constraint to improve computational efficiency. Finally, study cases are investigated to validate the proposed method, and the feasibility of the discrete sampling method for constraint simplification is also verified.

    Description: Rotor suspension stability is one of the important performance indexes of a blood pump and the basis of determining whether the blood pump can be used in a clinic. Compared with the traditional magnetic suspension system, a single-winding, bearingless motor has the advantages of a compact structure, simple control system and low power consumption. In this pursuit, the present study aimed to envisage and design the magnetic suspension system coupled with a single-winding bearingless motor and permanent magnet bearings, establish the theoretical models of axial force and electromagnetic torque, and calculate the stiffness of the magnetic suspension system at the equilibrium point. Addressing the problem of the negative axial stiffness of the magnetic suspension system being negative, which leads to the instability of the suspension rotor, the hydrodynamic bearing structure was proposed and designed, and the critical stiffness to realize the stable suspension of the rotor was obtained based on the stability criterion of the rotor dynamics model. The optimal structural parameters of the hydrodynamic bearing are selected by integrating various factors based on the solution of the Reynolds equation and a stiffness analysis. Furthermore, the vibration experiment results proved that the blood pump rotor exhibited a good suspension stability, and the maximum offset under the impact external fluid was no more than 2 μm.

    Description: Laser micro-welding manufacturers face substantial challenges in verifying weldment quality, as the industry and applications are requiring increasingly the miniaturization and compactness of products. The problem is compounded by new stringent demands for personalized products at competitive, low costs and the highest quality levels. High-pressure equipment manufacturers, in particular, rely on ISO 3834:2021 to assure and demonstrate best welding practices but also to manage risks associated with liability issues. ISO 3834:2021, like all conventional quality management systems, offers a one-dimensional, quasi-static overview of welding quality that may fail to deal with these new challenges and underlying complexities required to deal effectively with process variability. This paper presents a framework for welding companies to integrate horizontally their suppliers and customers with their processes and products, which are also integrated vertically in the context of Smart Manufacturing or Industry 4.0. It is focused on the development of a smart quality management system for intelligent digitization of all company manufacturing and business processes. Furthermore, an innovative data-based welding quality management framework is described for laser micro-welding applications and their implementation perspectives. The research is driven by an inductive methodology and based on a seamless integration of engineering-oriented heuristic and empirical approaches that is appropriate for intelligent and autonomous quality management, given the lack of research in this niche, but increasingly important topic area.

    Description: A finite element model of an aero-engine dual-rotor system with intermediate bearing supported by six bearings is set up. Three modes of non-concentricity caused by the assembly process are defined, namely parallel non-concentricity, front deflection angle non-concentricity and rear deflection angle non-concentricity. The influence of the non-concentricity on the vibration characteristics of the dual-rotor system is investigated in detail. The results show that the parallel non-concentricity and the front deflection angle non-concentricity have a significant influence on the bending vibration modals of the high-pressure rotor and the low-pressure rotor, but have little influence on the local vibration modals of the rotors. With the increase in the magnitude of the non-concentricity, the natural frequencies of the bending modals decrease continuously, and the mode shapes of bending modals and that of local modals may be interchanged, leading to the emergence of bending modals in advance. Therefore, the key parameters to be controlled in the assembly process are the parallel non-concentricity and the front deflection angle non-concentricity. In order to prevent the bending modal of the dual-rotor system from appearing in advance, it is necessary to control the parallel non-concentricity within 2 mm and the front deflection angle non-concentricity amount within 0.18°.

    Description: A new algorithm is proposed in order to detect and quantify partially broken bars in induction motors during start-up without load. In the qualification process, no threshold is used. It uses the principle of the harmonic generated by the broken bar in the stator current, it should vary with the slip to confirm the failure and provide more security in the diagnosis. A severity index is also proposed, based on the maximum peaks of the Teager energy operator of the Gaussian filter applied in the stator current signal. Experimental data were used to validate the algorithm, comparing rotors manufactured with one partially bar, one failed bar, and two completely failed bars, arranged in a variety of ways. The results show that the algorithm qualifies correctly the faulty bar, even for a partially broken bar. In the quantification phase, the severity index of the fault shows the higher sensibility in comparison to the state-of-the-art. Its value for a 3 HP motor is: 8.837 × 10−10 for a healthy rotor, 2.553 × 10−8 for a partially broken bar, and 4.058 × 10−7 for one broken bar.

    Description: Neurological diseases may reduce Tibialis Anterior (TA) muscle recruitment capacity causing gait disorders, such as drop foot (DF). The majority of DF patients still retain excitable nerves and muscles which makes Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) an adequate technique to restore lost mobility. Recent studies suggest the need for developing personalized and assist-as-needed control strategies for wearable FES in order to promote natural and functional movements while reducing the early onset of fatigue. This study contributes to a real-time implementation of a trajectory tracking FES control strategy for personalized DF correction. This strategy combines a feedforward Non-Linear Autoregressive Neural Network with Exogenous inputs (NARXNN) with a feedback PD controller. This control strategy advances with a user-specific TA muscle model achieved by the NARXNN’s ability to model dynamic systems relying on the foot angle and angular velocity as inputs. A closed-loop, fully wearable stimulation system was achieved using an ISTim stimulator and wearable inertial sensor for electrical stimulation and user’s kinematic gait sensing, respectively. Results showed that the NARXNN architecture with 2 hidden layers and 10 neurons provided the highest performance for modelling the kinematic behaviour of the TA muscle. The proposed trajectory tracking control revealed a low discrepancy between real and reference foot trajectories (goodness of fit = 77.87%) and time-effectiveness for correctly stimulating the TA muscle towards a natural gait and DF correction.

    Description: The simple act of walking can occasionally cause ankle sprains. Traditionally, the rehabilitation of a sprained ankle involves physical therapy. Physical therapy is one of the health professions that help regain mobility through manual exercises. Aquatic therapy is one of the most potent water-based anti-inflammatory methods currently employed that increases local blood circulation, decreases pain and swelling, and promotes speedy healing. Several studies have demonstrated that ankle rehabilitation robots have immense potential in patients’ rehabilitation and recovery; however, these robots cannot be used underwater. This paper introduces the design, development, and control of a therapeutic robot incorporating aquatic therapy for ankle rehabilitation. Its primary objective is to design and control a one degree of freedom ankle rehabilitation robot that can be used in water and can recirculate hot water to simultaneously perform physical therapy and aquatic therapy. To conduct this study, an ankle rehabilitation robot was designed, modeled, developed, and controlled. The design and control techniques were evaluated by means of simulation and experimental results.

    Description: The heat generated by the ball screw feed system will produce thermal errors, which will cause the positioning accuracy to decrease. The thermal simulation modeling of the ball screw feed system is the basis for compensating thermal errors. The current thermal characteristic modeling method simplifies the reciprocating movement of the nut pair on the screw shaft to varying degrees, which leads to a decrease in simulation accuracy. In this paper, the nut is regarded as a moving heat source, and a novel method is adopted to make the moving process of the heat source closer to the actual nut movement process. The finite difference method is used to simulate the temperature field and thermal error of the ball screw feed system under different working conditions. Firstly, based on the heat transfer theory, the heat conduction differential equation of the feed system is established and discretized. The thermal error model of the ball screw feed system is established. Then, the relationship between nut heat source position and operating time is established to simulate nut reciprocating motion. Finally, the temperature and thermal error experiments of the ball screw feed system were carried out, and the temperature experiment results were compared with the simulation results of the finite difference method. The results show that the maximum simulation error of the average temperature in the operating interval is 11.4%, and the maximum simulation error of thermal error is 16.4%, which verifies the validity and correctness of the method. The thermal characteristic modeling method of the ball screw feed system proposed in this paper has a substantial application value for accurately obtaining the temperature field of the feed system.

    Description: The bearing temperature forecasting provide can provide early detection of the gearbox operating status of wind turbines. To achieve high precision and reliable performance in bearing temperature forecasting, a novel hybrid model is proposed in the paper, which is composed of three phases. Firstly, the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method is employed to decompose raw bearing temperature data into several sub-series with different frequencies. Then, the SAE-GMDH method is utilized as the predictor in the subseries. The stacked autoencoder (SAE) is for the low-latitude features of raw data, while the group method of data handling (GMDH) is applied for the sub-series forecasting. Finally, the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) optimizes the weights for subseries and combines them to achieve the final forecasting results. By analytical investigation and comparing the final prediction results in all experiments, it can be summarized that (1) the proposed model has achieved excellent prediction outcome by integrating optimization algorithms with predictors; (2) the experiment results proved that the proposed model outperformed other selective models, with higher accuracies in all datasets, including three state-of-the-art models.

    Description: This paper focuses on the nonlinear system identification problem, which is a basic premise of control and fault diagnosis. For Hammerstein output-error nonlinear systems, we propose an auxiliary model-based multi-innovation fractional stochastic gradient method. The scalar innovation is extended to the innovation vector for increasing the data use based on the multi-innovation identification theory. By establishing appropriate auxiliary models, the unknown variables are estimated and the improvement in the performance of parameter estimation is achieved owing to the fractional-order calculus theory. Compared with the conventional multi-innovation stochastic gradient algorithm, the proposed method is validated to obtain better estimation accuracy by the simulation results.
