    Notes: The conductivity and mechanical properties of carbon black (CB) filled polyethylene (PE)composites depend on the conductive filler, molecular structure of polymer matrix, and theprocessing methods which are applied. CB filled high density polyethylene without and with glassfibre (GF) composites have been manufactured using single and twin screws extruder. Thecomposite made from the single screw extruder showed a much higher conductivity than that madefrom twin screws extruder for CB/PE composites with and without glass fibre. The conductivepaths are formed at very low CB content (1wt% CB for GF/CB/PE) when using single screwextruder to manufacture. The microstructure of these composites were analysed using SEM

    Notes: This paper presents the effects of incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNT) into nylon 6 onthermal properties and fire performance of woven glass reinforced CNT/nylon 6 nanocompositelaminates. Incorporation of CNT in nylon 6 improved the thermal stabilities, thermal conductivityand fire performance of laminates without compromising their mechanical properties. The thermalconductivity of laminates with 2 wt% CNT increased up to 42% compared to that without CNT.The ignition time and peak HRR time was delayed approx. 31% and 118%, respectively, inlaminates with 4 wt% CNT in nylon 6 over that without CNT

    Notes: The near-equiatomic TiNi alloy has been demonstrated to possess high wear resistance,which largely benefits from its pseudoelasticity (PE). However, the PE occurs only in a smalltemperature range, which makes the wear resistance of this alloy unstable as temperature changes,caused by environmental instability or frictional heating. Therefore, enlarging the workingtemperature of PE could considerably improve this alloy as a novel wear-resistant material.One possible approach is to develop a self-built temperature-dependent internal stress field bytaking the advance of the difference in thermal expansion between the pseudoelastic matrix and areinforcing phase. Such a T-dependent internal stress could adjust the martensitic transformationtemperature to respond changes in environmental temperature so that the temperature range of PEcould be enlarged, thus leading to a wide temperature range in which the minimum wear loss isretained.Research was conducted to investigate effects of an added second phase having a negativethermal expansion (NTE) coefficient on the wear resistance of a near-equiatomic TiNi alloy. Itwas demonstrated that the temperature range of this modified material in which the wear lossdropped was enlarged. In addition, the wear resistance of such a TiNi-matrix composite was onone order of magnitude higher than that of unmodified TiNi alloy

    Notes: Creatures have evolved extremely intelligent and complex adaptive systemsfor conducting their movements. They are protein motors with typical sizes of a fewtens of nanometers. Protein motors include three major protein families, myosin, kinesinand dynein, which participate in a wide range of cellular processes, using energy fromthe hydrolysis of adenosinetriphosphate ATP. To harness these protein motors to powernanometer-scale devices, we have investigated effective and non-destructive methodsfor immobilizing protein motors on surfaces and to arrange the output of these motors,e.g. force and movement, to be in a defined direction. We found NEB-22 to be usefulfor retaining the abilities of protein motors to support the movement of protein filaments.We fabricated various patterns of tracks of NEB-22 on coverslips and protein motorswere introduced and immobilized on glass surface. The trajectories of protein polymerswere confined to these tracks. Simple patterns readily biased and guide polymermovement confining it to be unidirectional. In addition, having used dynein c purifiedfrom Chlamydomonas flagellar axoneme, we showed that microtubules driven bysurface-bound dynein were self-organized into dynamic streams through collisionsbetween the microtubules and their subsequent joining

    Notes: In this research, surface texture changes of carbon steel AISI 1045 and stainless steel AISI 304 under simultaneous wear and corrosion were investigated. Asolution of 3.5 % wt. NaCl was used as the corrosion agent and a pin-on-disk tribometer was employed to perform wear and corrosion wear tests.Texture investigations of the worn samples have shown texture changes after wear and corrosion-wear tests. In worn carbon steel samples after dry wear test, {011}〈100〉 and {111} fiber texture components were developed in initially random oriented samples, whereas under corrosive-wear conditions, {111}〈011〉 texture and {001}〈110〉 texture were developed. In the stainless steel samples, {112}〈110〉 texture component was observed under both dry and corrosive wear conditions, in the samples that had random grain orientations before corrosion andcorrosion-wear tests

    Notes: The mechanical processing of metals results often in development of preferred orientation of grains or texture. On the other hand, the orientations of grains have a significant effect on the friction and wear behaviour of materials in contact. The objective of this investigation was to determine the crystallographic anisotropy of the coefficient of friction. Medium carbon steel AISI 1045 were selected as the substrate material. Automated orientation imaging analysis system (OIM) was used to identify orientations of grains in polycrystalline specimens. Micro-friction tests werecarried out using a Tribocope, a combination of nano-mechanical probe and atomic force microscope with an electrochemical cell. The micro friction tests were performed along different crystallographic directions inside different grains.The obtained results have shown that the coefficient of friction for individual grains depends on crystallographic orientation, and that the coefficient of friction for higher atomic density planes is lower than that for lower atomic density planes

    Notes: Stiff and tough conductive composites were manufactured using carbon blackcompounded with high and low density polyethylene, as well as linear low density polyethylene. A low percolation threshold value for the composites was achieved at 2 wt% carbon black. The impact strengths of the composites incorporating low density and linear low density polyethylene were found to be almost 16 and 26 times greater, respectively, than that of high density polyethylene composites. On the other hand, the modulus of high density polyethylene filled with carbon blackwas 2 times as high as low and linear low density polyethylene-based composites. Tensile modulus increased with the content of carbon black, however the impact strength of the composites decreased
