Description / Table of Contents: Invariant geomagnetic co-ordinates were calculated for points on a 5° x 5° grid over the earth, at altitudes of 105 km and 250 km. The calculation was based on the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) for 1975, updated to 1977.25 to correspond approximately to the middle of the International Magnetosphere Survey period. Global charts of the invariant co-ordinates at 105 km altitude are presented. The invariant co-ordinates were expanded into a set of spherical harmonic co-efficients and FORTRAN subroutines are described which allow the rapid re-calculation of the invariant co-ordinates form the co-efficients.

Description / Table of Contents: Tables of mean monthly surface temperature and plots of mean annual temperature are presented for most of the permanent Antarctic and Southern Ocean stations. Because of the geographic sparcity of meteorological stations, particularly in the Pacific sector, data from some more northerly stations are also included.

Description / Table of Contents: A computer technique is described for digitising data from the sea ice maps distributed weekly by the U.S. Navy-NOAA Joint Ice Centre. Monthly maps of the Antarctic region outlining extent of sea ice cover have been available from this source since January 1973. Computer programs for the analysis of this data are described. Maps are presented which illustrate the mean, over ten years, of the extent each month and at maximum. These data have been used as climate monitor using the relation between sea ice extent and the distribution of anticyclones, Antarctic and ocean temperatures, and atmospheric CO2 levels which have been the topics of many recent studies. The data are also of revelance to polar transport studies. Ships may need to penetrate, and aircraft may need to overfly, many kilometre of sea ice in order to carry out scientific programs or to gain access to Antarctic stations.

Description / Table of Contents: The atlas shows the known distribution and abundance of each vascular species on Macquarie Island immediately prior to the commencement of control measures against rabbits in 1978. It gives a baseline against which changes in the vegetation can be monitored. The effects of the introduced vertebrates on the vegetation are discussed. Additional data are given on the habitat, gregarious performance and phenology of some species.

Description / Table of Contents: Sixty-four CTD stations were taken during the SIBEX II cruise in January 1985 as a supplement to the krill research program. Casts were made to 1000 m or to near bottom if shallower, along a series of north-south transects from 60°S to the continental shelf of Antarctica between 60°E and 90°E. In situ salinity, temperature and sigma-t are tabulated for standard depths, and shown graphically. T/S plots for each station are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Aspects of man's adaptation and reaction to working in an isolated, cold environment are examined. The number of wintering personnel at Australian stations has increased markedly in the last five years. Building construction, maintenance and related activities have become a major part of station work programs and have introduced new hazards to the work environment. The health of the Davis 1982 expedition was generally good, with 6.2 cases per wintering expeditioner. Forty-five per cent of cases were the result of accidents. Subject and occupational influences on morbidity are discussed. The results of monthly measurements of nine physiological parameters are reported and compared with the findings from two previous Australian expeditions. The fitness of the expedition, calculated using a submaximal work technique, increased as a linear function over the year, including the winter period. Measurements of temperature changes in divers showed that current practices result in only small falls in body temperature and are unlikely to lead to hyperthermia.

Description / Table of Contents: Nitrate, phosphate and silicate concentrations obtained during the ADBEX I cruise to the Prydz Bay region in November and December 1982 are plotted with depth and the raw data are tabulated. Location of the sampling stations and the average concentration of each nutrient in the top 100 m of the water column is mapped.

Description / Table of Contents: During the ADBEX III cruise (September to December 1985) to the western Prydz Bay region, Antarctica, nine shallow hauls (0-200 m), six deep hauls (200-1000 m) and one target trawl were made with a RMT 1+8 net, as well as eleven vertical hauls with an ORI-2000 net. From these samples abundance of euphausiids, notably krill Euphausia superba, and other zooplankton was investigated. A diving program was also carried out to observe and collect Euphausia superba from under the pack-ice. For postlarval krill, size (length, weight), sex and maturity composition are reported.
