Description / Table of Contents: A guide to the Decapoda of the Southern Ocean is presented, with emphasis on those species which have been recorded south of the Antarctic Convergence. Despite being well represented in all other oceans the decapod fauna of Antarctic waters is depauperate, with only eleven species having been reported from south of the Antarctic Convervence (Petalidium foliaceum, Notocrangon antacticus, Pasiphaea longispina, Pasiphaea scotiae, Nematocarcinus longirostris, Nematocarcinus lanceopes, Hymenodora gracilis, Chorismus antarcticus, Lebbeus antarcticus, Acanthephyra pelagica and Paralomis spectabilis). Species found in the subarctic waters north of the Convergence are also included in the key as their ranges may overlap with those of the Antarctic species. A key is also provided to the larvae of decapod families which are known to have Antarctic representatives. Short descriptions, with figures and records of occurence, are presented for each of the eleven Antarctic species to enable the reader to confirm identifications from the keys. A glossary of technical terms has also been compiled.

Description / Table of Contents: Biological studies commenced at the American station Wilkes in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica in 1957. In 1959 station operations were taken over by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) and maintained until 1969 when Casey station was commissioned. This report reviews the information on the fauna obtained by ANARE up to 1980. Studies on invertebrates were limited to ectoparasites of birds and seals. Interest was mostly in the avian and mammalian fauna. Extensive banding of Adélie penguins, southern giant petrels and southern fulmars was undertaken for dispersion and breeding studies. Breeding behaviours of southern fulmars and Antarctic petrels were studied. The main breeding locality of the Weddell seal in the area was located. The southern elephant seal was found to breed at the Windmill Islands, the only known breeding site on the Antarctic continent.

Description / Table of Contents: A comparative study is made on the amount of sea salt (dominantly NaCl) deposited on Macquarie Island due to atmospheric precipitation. It is found that the scavenging of solid salt particles alone cannot account for all the salt budget over certain areas of the Island. It is considered that sea spray droplets carried aloft by winds and scavenged by precipitation in the immediate vicinity of the shoreline is responsible for this deficit.

Description / Table of Contents: A feasibility study on establishing a snow / ice runway in Antarctica for intercontinental flights by wheeled aircraft, has been undertaken in accordance with an agreement between the Australian Antarctic Division and the Russian Antarctic Expedition. In January - February 1996, a field reconnaissance was made to find a snow / ice runway site in the East Antarctic coastal zone between 60°E and 120°E longitude. Historical meteorological data have been analysed. The temperature range, and wind speed and direction were examined to evaluate the frequency of unfavourable weather conditions at four Antarctic stations: Casey, Zhong Shan, Davis and Mawson. The natural conditions at the four prospective sites near Casey, the Larsemann Hills, Druzhnaya IV and Mawson were investigated to identify the most favourable site in relation to both construction and air operation requirements. Four main criteria were applied to determine the best location for snow / ice runway establishment: (1) the absence of crevassing, (2) the potential for aligning the runway parallel with the prevailing wind with no limiting obstacles in the climb path, (3) the suitability of natural surface gradients, and (4) the suitability of snow stratigraphy and the relation of snow accumulation to melting. The information produced demonstrates that the Casey area is the best place for construction and operation of a compacted snow runway. Another prospective site is on the Amery Ice Shelf near Druzhnaya IV. The equipment and logistic facilities required for compacted snow runway construction are summarised.

Description / Table of Contents: The purpose of this paper is to make available transcripts of reports by the first visitors to Heard Island. The sequence of voyages in the vicinity of the island between 1773 and 1858 is described. Discovery is attributed to Captain John J. Heard in the bark Oriental in 1853. This voyage not only broke the news of a new island, but also gave a position that initiated sealing at the Island in 1855. The majority of early visitors were sealers hunting sea-elephant for oil. The industry peaked in 1858 and continued sporadically for another 24 years.

Description / Table of Contents: Phytoplankton samples were collected at hydrographic stations along seven north-south transects during the SIBEX II cruise (December 1984 - February 1985). Phytoplankton pigments were analysed using a high resolution high performance liquid chromatography technique which resolves virtually all known marker pigments. Data are presented for the abundance of twenty-seven pigments in the upper 200 m of the water column at each station. For each major marker pigment, north-south vertical sections are presented, as well as the geographic distribution of each pigment integrated from the surface to 100 m depth and the integrated ratio of that pigment to chlorophyll a. These represent the total abundance of the algal source and its relative proportion in the population, respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: A comprehensive survey of the ice-sheet topography and surface physical characteristics was conducted by ANARE glaciological teams in eastern Wilkes Land during the period 1980-86. Oversnow operations were between 112°E and 132°E extending from the coast to 69°S and covered the elevation range 800-2300 m asl. This report presents the data set collected on the surface topography, and the spatial distribution of snow accumulation rates, snow surface microrelief and surface wind fields, snow surface physical properties and firn temperatures.
