    Description: Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Australia: Neoseptorioides eucalypti gen. & sp. nov. from Eucalyptus radiata leaves, Phytophthora gondwanensis from soil, Diaporthe tulliensis from rotted stem ends of Theobroma cacao fruit, Diaporthe vawdreyi from fruit rot of Psidium guajava, Magnaporthiopsis agrostidis from rotted roots of Agrostis stolonifera and Semifissispora natalis from Eucalyptus leaf litter. Furthermore, Neopestalotiopsis egyptiaca is described from Mangifera indica leaves (Egypt), Roussoella mexicana from Coffea arabica leaves (Mexico), Calonectria monticola from soil (Thailand), Hygrocybe jackmanii from littoral sand dunes (Canada), Lindgomyces madisonensis from submerged decorticated wood (USA), Neofabraea brasiliensis from Malus domestica (Brazil), Geastrum diosiae from litter (Argentina), Ganoderma wiiroense on angiosperms (Ghana), Arthrinium gutiae from the gut of a grasshopper (India), Pyrenochaeta telephoni from the screen of a mobile phone (India) and Xenoleptographium phialoconidium gen. & sp. nov. on exposed xylem tissues of Gmelina arborea (Indonesia). Several novelties are introduced from Spain, namely Psathyrella complutensis on loamy soil, Chlorophyllum lusitanicum on nitrified grasslands (incl. Chlorophyllum arizonicum comb. nov.), Aspergillus citocrescens from cave sediment and Lotinia verna gen. & sp. nov. from muddy soil. Novel foliicolous taxa from South Africa include Phyllosticta carissicola from Carissa macrocarpa, Pseudopyricularia hagahagae from Cyperaceae and Zeloasperisporium searsiae from Searsia chirindensis. Furthermore, Neophaeococcomyces is introduced as a novel genus, with two new combinations, N. aloes and N. catenatus. Several foliicolous novelties are recorded from La Réunion, France, namely Ochroconis pandanicola from Pandanus utilis, Neosulcatispora agaves gen. & sp. nov. from Agave vera-cruz, Pilidium eucalyptorum from Eucalyptus robusta, Strelitziana syzygii from Syzygium jambos (incl. Strelitzianaceae fam. nov.) and Pseudobeltrania ocoteae from Ocotea obtusata (Beltraniaceae emend.). Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS DNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.

    Description: The discrepancy between global loss and local constant species richness has led to debates over data quality, systematic biases in monitoring programmes and the adequacy of species richness to capture changes in biodiversity. We show that, more fundamentally, null expectations of stable richness can be wrong, despite independent yet equal colonization and extinction. We analysed fish and bird time series and found an overall richness increase. This increase reflects a systematic bias towards an earlier detection of colonizations than extinctions. To understand how much this bias influences richness trends, we simulated time series using a neutral model controlling for equilibrium richness and temporal autocorrelation (that is, no trend expected). These simulated time series showed significant changes in richness, highlighting the effect of temporal autocorrelation on the expected baseline for species richness changes. The finite nature of time series, the long persistence of declining populations and the potential strong dispersal limitation probably lead to richness changes when changing conditions promote compositional turnover. Temporal analyses of richness should incorporate this bias by considering appropriate neutral baselines for richness changes. Absence of richness trends over time, as previously reported, can actually reflect a negative deviation from the positive biodiversity trend expected by default.

    Notes: A new method for the optical cross-section measurement of deep levels in junctions is presented. It is based on the measurement of the capacitance and conductance of the junction under illumination, as a function of the photon energy hν and the frequency of the measuring signal. This technique has been applied to the measurement of the optical capture cross section σon of the Au acceptor level corresponding to the emission of electrons to the conduction band.

    Notes: A real (nonabrupt) p-n junction has been theoretically analyzed. It consists of a graded profile of shallow dopant atoms and a uniform profile of deep impurities, their relative concentrations varying along the structure (i.e., there are regions where deep impurity concentration is highest and others where dopant concentration dominates). This type of structure was excited by majority-carrier pulses, which allowed us to describe and explain new components in the charge distribution through the junction. The change in the interpretation of results from the application of capacitance techniques to these samples is quite remarkable. The validity of the theory is verified by comparison with experimental results obtained for silicon p-n junctions highly doped with platinum. The detailed analysis of the electrical model of a gradual junction with two deep levels, located in both halves of the band gap has allowed us to explain the following: (a) the disappearance of peaks in deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), (b) the existence of both positive and negative signals in a majority-DLTS spectrum, and (c) decreasing capacitance and voltage transients due to the emission of majority carriers or transients in which rising and falling sections are combined. The last two points cannot be explained by using the extended model of p+-n or n+-p junctions even if the deep-level concentration NT is assumed to be of the same order as the free carrier concentration.

    Notes: Optical electron and hole capture cross sections for the deep levels Ec−0.22 eV and Ev+0.33 eV associated to Pd in Si have been measured using constant-capacitance deep level optical spectroscopy and optical admittance spectroscopy. The experimental results fit well to the model of Lucovsky. The threshold energies obtained for the electron and hole emission from the Ec−0.22 eV level are 250 and 890 meV, respectively. The threshold energies obtained for the electron and hole emission from the Ev+0.33 eV level are 820 and 330 meV, respectively.

    Notes: Fermi levels, electron densities, electrostatic potential, and exchange and correlation potentials are self-consistently calculated. A jellium model is used for the positive charge. The thin metal film of thickness L is put between infinitely high potential walls at a distance D of each other. Periodic boundary conditions are used parallel to the surfaces. In order to keep down the number of basis functions used, self-consistent Fermi levels are determined as a function of D and then are extrapolated. In spite of the strong nonlocal character of the electrostatic potential self-consistent results are achieved treating this potential in a direct way, this fact allows to watch the role of this potential in connection with other variables of physical interest. Therefore this model seems to be suitable to be used within more general problems, such as those trying to describe metal–electrolyte interfaces.

    Notes: New positron lifetime data in a series of isothermally crystallized polyethylene pairs with known concentrations of chain defects, having a lamellar structure, have been measured. The materials were characterized by small-angle and wide-angle x-ray scattering techniques. Positron lifetime data were computer analyzed and only three components could be resolved. It is shown that the annihilation mechanisms can be understood in terms of average distance between lamellar crystals (long period), crystal thickness, and chain defect concentration. The present results confirm, in consonance with the conclusions of other authors, the longest component to be due to ortho-positronium pick-off annihilation. The intermediate component may be ascribed to positronium trapped at the crystal-amorphous interface. The application of a three-state trapping model yields a lifetime of about 900 ps for this state. It is suggested that the shortest component may be due to free positron annihilation, para-positronium self-annihilation, and annihilation of positrons from a tightly bound state localized at the chain defects. An approximate calculation provides lifetime values around 250 ps for this short-lived state.
