    Notes: Non-stoichiometric titanium dioxide (TiO2-x) thin films were obtained by unbalancedreactive pulsed magnetron sputtering and subsequently modified by hydrogen plasma. To investigatethe influence of hydrogen plasma on the properties of the films, time and temperature were changedduring the process with a fixed vacuum pressure of 10 Pa. The film structure, composition, resistanceand blood compatibility were studied. The results that the concentration of Ti4+ decreases with theincreasing of treated time and substrate temperature, which results in existence of oxygen vacancyand increase of conductivity. It is found that Ti-O film treated in 110ºC plasma for 15min representsthe lowest thrombosis risks, which could be mainly attributed to its characteristic of n-typesemiconductor caused by appropriate oxygen vacancy forming in hydrogen plasma treatment

    Notes: CrNx film was widely used in mechanical engineering field because of its excellentanti-wear and corrosion resistance properties. While most of research was focused on mechanicalproperties, little attention had been paid to the corrosion resistance and residual stress of CrNx film .In this paper, CrNx films were deposited on silicon wafer (100) and iron substrate by unbalancedmagnetron sputtering system (UBMS) at different N2 flow. Then the structure, thickness, residualstress, micro-hardness, wear-resistance and anti-corrosion properties of CrNx films were investigated.The results showed that the phase composition of CrNx films transformed from Cr, single phase Cr2N,Cr2N and CrN coexist to single CrN with the N2 flow rate increasing. The CrNx films composed withCr2N phase, which deposited at 6 sccm N2 flow, had the highest microhardness and had highercompressive residual stress. Whereas the CrNx films with CrN and Cr2N phase coexist had the bestwear and corrosion resistance

    Notes: Titanium oxides films were deposited on tensile sample and vascular stents made of 316Lstainless steel by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The effects of structures, deposition temperature,Ti interlayer and thickness on the adhesion of titanium oxide films were investigated by tensile tests.The results revealed that the structure of the Ti-O films affect their adhesion dramatically. TiO filmis brittle and fragile, lacking ability of deformation. Therefore its adhesion was worse than that ofTiO2 film. The higher substrate temperature was helpful to improve adhesion of film, the adhesionof the TiO film deposited at 673K was better than those of the TiO films deposited at 323K and473K. The adhesion of the TiO film with Ti interlayer was better than the one without interlayer.The introduction of Ti interlayer was beneficial to adhesion of film. The adhesion of thinner TiO2film was better than that of thicker one. TiO2 film deposited on stents had good adhesion. Afterexpansion, the film didn’t crack and peel off. TiO2 film has potential application on the vascularstents for improving its blood compatibility

    Notes: Diamond-Like carbon (DLC) films were prepared under different bias voltage by directcurrent magnetic filter cathode vacuum arc deposition (DC-MFCVAD). Bias voltages changed from0 to -200 V. The study intends to investigate the effect on the properties of DLC films forbiomedical applications. X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) was used to investigate compositionof the films. Nano-scratch tests were used to characterize effects of bias voltage to adhesion.Furthermore, the wettability of the DLC films was investigated by contact angle measurementsusing four common liquids. Finally, platelet adhesion experiments were done to evaluate theinteraction of blood with DLC films. The results showed that the adhesion, wettability andhemo-compatibility of DLC films were affected by bias voltage

    Notes: Ti/TiN multilayer films were synthesized on 17-4PH stainless steel using unbalancedmagnetron sputtering. The modulation periods is ranged from 100nm to 350 nm. The microstructureof the multilayer films was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The cross-section views of the multilayerfilms were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The microhardness and wear resistanceof the films were measured by a HXD-1000 microhardness tester and ball-on-disk wear tester. Thecorrosion resistance of the multilayer films was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization scans ina 3% NaCl solution. The results showed that there was TiNx intergradation layer in the films. Themicrohardness and the wear resistance of the multilayer films increased with the layer number. TheTi/TiN multilayer can improve the corrosive resistance of the 17-4PH stainless steel

    Notes: The magnetic filed arrangement of unbalance magnetron sputtering can be changedemployed to expand the plasma region and induce more ions to bombard the films for fabricatingexcellent quality films. In this paper, four targets closed-filed unbalance magnetron sputtering wasintroduced, the effect of the different magnetic field arrangement on the titanium oxide filmsproperties was investigated. By changing the distance from target to vacuum center, the differentunbalance state of the magnetic field was formed around the substrate. The titanium oxide films weresynthesized at different unbalance state of the magnetic field. The microstructure of the titaniumoxide films was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and the residual stress measurement for thefilms was determined by grazing incidence XRD. The results revealed that the higher unbalance of themagnetic field around the substrate, the higher ion current of the substrate. Comparing with increasingthe substrate bias voltage, the ion current increased 2~4 times through changing magnetic fieldarrangement to induce higher unbalance of the magnetic field. Ion/atom ratio increase was in favor ofrutile phase formation for titanium oxide film. The unbalance state increase resulted in more highercompressive stress in the films

    Notes: CrN coatings were deposited on cemented carbide substrates by filtered cathodic vacuumarc technique (FCVA). The effect of different deposition parameters: nitrogen partial pressure,substrate-bias voltage and preheating of the substrate, on the structural and mechanical properties ofthe coating was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the structure andcomposition of the coatings. The tribological behaviour and wear properties of the coatings againstSi3N4 ball at different normal loads were studied under reciprocating sliding condition. The resultsshowed that a smooth and dense CrN coating with good properties can be obtained provided a pure Crinterlayer was pre-deposited. The optimal deposition parameters were the nitrogen partial pressure of0.1 Pa, substrate-bias voltage of -100 V. Preheating of the substrate was no good for improving theproperties of the coating. The FCVA CrN coating showed high hardness and good wear resistance,which was probably attributed to its smooth surface and dense microstructure. The wear mechanismof the CrN coating was a combination of abrasion and oxidation. However, the coating flaked off athigh normal load due to the deficient adhesion strength of the coating to the substrate

    Notes: Si-N-O films have drawn researcher’s much attention recently due to their potentialsuperiority in blood compatibility of biomaterials. In this paper, Si-N-O films were synthesized on〈100〉 silicon substrates by pulsed reactive unbalanced magnetron sputtering a single crystal silicontarget with high purity in a mixture atmosphere of Ar and N2. XPS and FTIR results showed theSi-N-O films synthesized at higher N2 flux could be described to random bonding model (RBM). InRBM, the Si2p existed in the form of a-Si3N4 and SiNνO4-ν (ν=0,1,2,3,4) components. Plateletadhesion behavior on Si-N-O films was assessed by platelet adhesion test and Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) assay, qualitatively and quantitatively separately. The correlativity of film chemical structureand blood compatibility was investigated. The results of platelet adhesion and activation showed thatthe RBM film with higher N/O ratio exhibited favorable blood compatibility. It was shown that theSi-N-O film with specific composition and chemical bonding state was superior in bloodcompatibility compared to low temperature isotropic carbon (LTIC)

    Notes: In order to improve the abrasion property of polyoxymethylene (POM),diamond likecarbon (DLC) film was deposited on POM substrate by the method of magnetic filtered cathodicvacuum arc deposition (MFCVAD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the sp3fraction decreased with the negative bias voltages increased. According to the result of thenano-indenter, the hardness of POM plates coated with DLC films was significantly harder thanPOM substrate. The results of ball-on-disc tribological testing demonstrated that the hardest DLCfilm had the lowest friction coefficient (0.11). The evaluation of in vitro platelet adhesion testindicates that the numbers of adhered and activated platelet on the DLC film deposited under thecondition of 0V and 9min were remarkably decreased compared with that of the untreated POM
