    Description: In this study, we combine the fuzzy customer information problem with the multicommodity multimodal routing with schedule-based services which was explored in our previous study [1]. The fuzzy characteristics of the customer information are embodied in the demanded volumes of the multiple commodities and the time windows of their due dates. When the schedule-based services are considered in the routing, schedule constraints emerge because the operations of block container trains should follow their predetermined schedules. This will restrict the routes selection from space-time feasibility. To solve this combinatorial optimization problem, we first build a fuzzy chance-constrained nonlinear programming model based on fuzzy possibility theory. We then use a crisp equivalent method and a linearization method to transform the proposed model into the classical linear programming model that can be effectively solved by the standard mathematical programming software. Finally, a numerical case is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The sensitivity of the best solution with respect to the values of the confidence levels is also examined.

    Description: Understanding cement hydration is of crucial importance for the application of cementitious materials, including cemented paste backfill. In this work, the adsorption of a single water molecule on an M3-C3S (111) surface is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption energies for 14 starting geometries are calculated and the electronic properties of the reaction are analysed. Two adsorption mechanisms, molecular adsorption and dissociative adsorption, are observed and six adsorption configurations are found. The results indicate that spontaneous dissociative adsorption is energetically favored over molecular adsorption. Electrons are transferred from the surface to the water molecule during adsorption. The density of states (DOS) reveals the bonding mechanisms between water and the surface. This study provides an insight into the adsorption mechanism at an atomic level, and can significantly promote the understanding of cement hydration within such systems.

    Description: Hyperspectral imagery provides detailed spectral information that can be used for tree species discrimination. The aim of this study is to assess spectral–spatial complexity reduction techniques for tree species classification using an airborne prism experiment (APEX) hyperspectral image. The methodology comprised the following main steps: (1) preprocessing (removing noisy bands) and masking out non-forested areas; (2) applying dimensionality reduction techniques, namely, independent component analysis (ICA), principal component analysis (PCA), and minimum noise fraction transformation (MNF), and stacking the selected dimensionality-reduced (DR) components to create new data cubes; (3) super-pixel segmentation on the original image and on each of the dimensionality-reduced data cubes; (4) tree species classification using a random forest (RF) classifier; and (5) accuracy assessment. The results revealed that tree species classification using the APEX hyperspectral imagery and DR data cubes yielded good results (with an overall accuracy of 80% for the APEX imagery and an overall accuracy of more than 90% for the DR data cubes). Among the classification results of the DR data cubes, the ICA-transformed components performed best, followed by the MNF-transformed components and the PCA-transformed components. The best class performance (according to producer’s and user’s accuracy) belonged to Picea abies and Salix alba. The other classes (Populus x (hybrid), Alnus incana, Fraxinus excelsior, and Quercus robur) performed differently depending on the different DR data cubes used as the input to the RF classifier.

    Description: Recently, China has witnessed a continuously increasing Debt-to-GDP ratio and a vigorously expanding shadow banking sector. Housing prices hovering at a high level seriously affect the lives of ordinary residents. Disappointingly, a variety of activities such as intense deleveraging campaigns and tight monetary controls produce little effect. Why do these seemingly rightful implementations hardly work? What should governments do to stop the incessant expansion of asset bubbles? What role ought financial supervisors to play in regulating credit markets and facilitating a sustainable and inclusive economic growth? This paper sets off from the pledgeability of asset bubbles and constructs a generalized overlapping generation (OLG) model incorporating financial frictions and collateral constraints, in order to explore the bubble evolution under the alterations of market interest rates and credit conditions. The results show a unique bubble equilibrium, in which the steady-state bubble size expands when interest rate increases. Numerical results further reveal that the bubble-inflation effect of a higher interest rate is reinforced by a more stringent collateral constraint. Our research contributes to an explanation of the inefficacy of present policies and provides the following policy implications: The combination of an interest rate elevation and a strong loan restriction is in fact undesirable for suppressing asset bubbles. Not merely does it strike productivity and capital formation, but it also fosters investors to hold more risky assets to solve liquidity shortage under constrained borrowing capacity.

    Description: The double-deck tunnel is well known as smart infrastructure because multiple sections can be used for various purposes. Although the stability of a double-deck tunnel is mainly governed by the intermediate slab, the effect of various governing factors on tunnel structural stability has not been fully investigated. In this study, performance-based evaluation method for a double-deck tunnel is suggested as a three-dimensional matrix considering the life cycle of a double-deck tunnel. Moreover, a customized software for design and maintenance of a double-deck tunnel is developed. A structural analysis solver based on a beam–spring model for a double-deck tunnel was embedded in this code. The effects of connection type as well as depth of tunnel, ground stiffness and traffic load on structural behavior of tunnel were investigated. From the analysis, it was found that the connection type between segment lining and intermediate slab significantly affects the behavior of segment lining: simply connected condition causes lesser stress and moment than fully fixed condition. The deeper the tunnel depth, the greater the member force of segment lining. In addition, as both the tunnel depth and the ground stiffness increase, the influence of connection type on the structural stability of the double-deck tunnel becomes insignificant.

    Description: The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) is associated with the clinical outcome of cancer treatment. For several cancers, countries with relatively good health care systems have favorable MIRs. However, the association between lung cancer MIR and health care expenditures or rankings has not been evaluated. We used linear regression to analyze the correlation between lung cancer MIRs and the total expenditures on health/gross domestic product (e/GDP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) rankings. We included 57 countries, for which data of adequate quality were available, and we found high rates of incidence and mortality but low MIRs in more developed regions. Among the continents, North America had the highest rates of incidence and mortality, whereas the highest MIRs were in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Globally, favorable MIRs correlated with high e/GDP and good WHO ranking (regression coefficient, −0.014 and 0.001; p = 0.004, and p = 0.014, respectively). In conclusion, the MIR for lung cancer in different countries varies with the expenditure on health care and health system rankings.

    Description: As places where future citizens are educated, knowledge is (co-)produced and societal developments are critically reflected, higher education institutions (HEIs) can play a key role in addressing sustainability challenges. In order to accelerate mutual learning, shared problem understanding, and joint development of sustainable solutions, interinstitutional exchange and collaboration between HEIs is crucial. However, little research to date has focused on institutional HEI networks in the field of sustainability. More specifically, we still understand little about the concrete development, implementation, and adaptation of such networks. This article explores early-stage HEI networks for sustainability from a conceptual and empirical stance in order to develop a framework that facilitates structured descriptions of these networks, as well as to foster cross-HEI learning on their effective performance. It therefore combines insights from an explorative literature review, two case studies and an interactive workshop at the ISCN Conference 2018. As results, we first suggest an analytical framework to facilitate a systematic characterization of HEI networks. Second, by applying the framework to the two case studies, we present and discuss lessons learned on how a single HEI can contribute to establishing a network and how it can utilize its network membership effectively to strengthen its efforts for sustainability.

    Description: Black pepper is an industrial crop with high economic and export value. However, black pepper production in Vietnam has been seriously affected by the root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. The purpose of this study was to select active endophytic bacteria (EB) for the cost-effective and environmentally friendly management of Meloidogyne sp. Thirty-four EB strains were isolated. Of these, five isolates displayed the highest activity, demonstrating 100% mortality of J2 nematodes. These active EB were identified based on sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene; notably, all the potential endophytic bacterial strains belong to the genus of Bacillus. In greenhouse tests, Bacillus megaterium DS9 significantly reduced nematodes in the soil and pepper plant roots with great inhibition values of 81.86% and 73.11%, respectively, with the lowest rate of nematodes built up at 0.23. This active antinematodes strain also showed good effect on promoting pepper plant growth. Some enzymatic activities, including chitinase and protease activity related to the biocontrol of Meiloidogyne sp., were also detected. The results investigated in the current study suggested that these selected EB strains may be good candidates for biocontrol agents of Meloidogyne sp., and plant promoting effects. The results also enhanced the novel active antinematode endophytic bacterial communities.

    Description: This contribution outlines the design and manufacturing of a microfluidic device implemented as a biosensor for retrieval and detection of bacteria RNA. The device is fully made of Cyclo-Olefin Copolymer (COC), which features low auto-fluorescence, biocompatibility and manufacturability by hot-embossing. The RNA retrieval was carried on after bacteria heat-lysis by an on-chip micro-heater, whose function was characterized at different working parameters. Carbon resistive temperature sensors were tested, characterized and printed on the biochip sealing film to monitor the heating process. Off-chip and on-chip processed RNA were hybridized with capture probes on the reaction chamber surface and identification was achieved by detection of fluorescence tags. The application of the mentioned techniques and materials proved to allow the development of low-cost, disposable albeit multi-functional microfluidic system, performing heating, temperature sensing and chemical reaction processes in the same device. By proving its effectiveness, this device contributes a reference to show the integration potential of fully thermoplastic devices in biosensor systems.

    Description: This paper presents a thermoelectric gas microsensor with improved stability where platinum nanoparticles linked by bifunctional ligands are used as a catalyst. The sensor design provides a homogeneous temperature field over the membrane, an important factor for the long-term stability of the catalyst. A comprehensive study of heat transfer from the chip is performed to evaluate the convection heat loss coefficient and to understand its effect on the homogeneity of the temperature field in a real-time situation. The effect of highly heat-conductive thermopiles is also analyzed by comparing the temperature distribution and power consumption with a thermoresistive sensor of the same dimensions and materials. Despite the thermopiles, the thermoelectric sensor gives better temperature homogeneity and consumes 23% less power than the thermoresistive sensor for 90 °C average temperature on the membrane. A comparative stability analysis among ligand-linked nanoparticles with 5 different ligands and unprotected nanoparticles was done through 3 consecutive 24 h tests under 1.5% continuous hydrogen gas flow. The sensors give very stable output, almost no degradation, through 72 h (3 × 24 h) tests for 3 different ligand-linked nanoparticles. The sensor design provides superb stability to the catalyst: Even catalysts of unprotected nanoparticles withstood more than 24 h and the sensor signal degradation is only 20%.
