Notes: In the present paper, preconditioning of iterative equation solvers for the Navier-Stokes equations is investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the mixed finite element formulation. The linear equation solvers used are the orthomin and the Bi-CGSTAB algorithms. The storage structure of the equation matrix is given special attention in order to avoid swapping and thereby increase the speed of the preconditioner. The preconditioners considered are Jacobian, SSOR and incomplete LU preconditioning of the matrix associated with the velocities. A new incomplete LU preconditioning with fill-in for the pressure matrix at locations in the matrix where the corner nodes are coupled is designed. For all preconditioners, inner iterations are investigated for possible improvement of the preconditioning. Numerical experiments are executed both in two and three dimensions.

Notes: Procedures for extending the useful scope of the finite difference method in solid mechanics applications are presented. The improvements centre around the introduction of the physical nature of the deformations into the equations used to formulate the approximate solution. This is accomplished by evaluating the coefficients of Taylor series expansions for the displacement approximations in terms of rigid body motions, strains and derivatives of strains. This procedure is demonstrated with plane stress applications. The ability to interpret the derivative approximations physically allows the fictitious nodes typical of the finite difference method to be rationally incorporated into the model as a means of enforcing traction boundary conditions. An example problem is solved using both regular and irregular meshes. The displacements and stresses compare well with finite element solutions.

Notes: The severe restrictions of the Babuška-Brezzi stability criteria permit only a limited number of interpolations for velocities (displacements) and pressure to be used for incompressible behaviour. These restrictions preclude the use of many useful elements. We show in this paper how such difficulties can be side-stepped by seeking the steady state solution through the use of various time marching schemes. This permits a simple iterative approach to incompressible (or nearly incompressible) problems of fluid mechanics or solid mechanics and provides a stimulus for the use of such procedures in metal forming flow, etc.

Notes: In this paper, a new procedure for solving 3-D dynamic problems of unbounded foundations in the frequency domain by using BEM is studied. For simulations of wave propagations due to far field effects, a type of infinite boundary element (IBEM) is presented for modelling a 3-D regular or irregular half space. The wave type considered could be compressional, shear or a combination of the two. Through the analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of 3-D fundamental solutions for elasto dynamics, a rather feasible technique for obtaining singular integral coefficients for dynamic problems has been developed. Through the analysis of the dynamic response for a 3-D square foundation under a uniform load distribution, excellent accuracy has been achieved in agreement with previous numerical solutions. Another example-analysis of the dynamic compliance of a rigid square plate on a half space-has also shown very good results. The development of this infinite boundary element provides a powerful tool for dealing with 3-D structure foundation interaction or wave propagation problems for irregular foundations such as arch dam canyons.

Notes: Contact-impact algorithms, which are sometimes called slideline algorithms, are a computationally time-consuming part of many explicit simulations of non-linear problems because they involve many branches, so they are not amenable to vectorization, which is essential for speed on supercomputers. The pinball algorithm is a simplified slideline algorithm which is readily vectorized. Its major idea is to embed pinballs in surface elements and to enforce the impenetrability condition only to pinballs. It can be implemented in either a Lagrange multiplier or penalty method. It is shown that, in any Lagrange multiplier method, no iterations are needed to define the contact surface. Examples of solutions and running times are given.

Notes: A general Finite Volume Method (FVM) for the analysis of structural problems is presented. It is shown that the FVM can be considered to be a particular case of finite elements with a non-Galerkin weighting. For structural analysis this can readily be interpreted as equivalent to the unit displacement method which involves mainly surface integrals. Both displacement and mixed FV formulations are presented for static and dynamic problems.

Notes: A new eight-node quadrilateral shear-bending Reissner-Mindlin plate finite element for the very thin and thick plates without locking and spurious zero-energy modes is presented. The element has very good convergence characteristics both for thin and thick plates, is hardly insensitive to mesh distortions, and passes the patch tests. The formulation of the element is derived from a displacement variational principle and some general criteria to compute inconsistent transverse shear strains. These criteria have been applied with success to four- and eight-node quadrilateral plate finite elements and could be applied to construct triangular elements. The eight-node quadrilateral shear-bending plate finite element proposed has been found to be very efficient.

Notes: A method is described which constructs three-dimensional unstructured tetrahedral meshes using the Delaunay triangulation criterion. Several automatic point creation techniques will be highlighted and an algorithm will be presented which can ensure that, given an initial surface triangulation which bounds a domain, a valid boundary conforming assembly of tetrahedra will be produced. Statistics of measures of grid quality are presented for several grids. The efficiency of the proposed procedure reduces the computer time for the generation of realistic unstructured tetrahedral grids to the order of minutes on workstations of modest computational capabilities.
