Notes: We analyze a model recently introduced by Imbihl et al. to describe the kinetic oscillations in the catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt(100). However we describe the surface reconstruction by a time dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation. With realistic values of the rate constants the region of oscillations in the PCO×PO2 diagram extends to very low values of the partial pressures (PCO=1.5×10−6 Torr, PO2=2.7×10−5 Torr) in agreement with the experimental results. In the investigation of the critical points and of the dynamics it has been possible to identify both saddle-node infinite period (SNIPER) and Hopf bifurcations.

Notes: A model for the homogeneous kinetic oscillations in the CO oxidation on Pt(100) is extended to describe space dependent situations by the introduction of two diffusive-like processes. As is well known these increase the size of the instability domain. Depending on the values of the diffusion coefficients, they lead to the existence, when the surface is homogeneous, of stationary periodic space patterns besides the uniform oscillating solutions. This may be shown both theoretically through linear stability analysis or numerical computation.

Notes: Secular terms occur in many perturbative solutions of nonlinear equation systems. In this work, an investigation is made of which cases they may occur in as the result of the application of the linear Carleman embedding to a system of nonlinear equations. The solution for the embedded system is written in a form that makes it convenient to see how these terms originate. Their occurrence for the general case is discussed and the results are exemplified by working out the Hénon–Heiles system.

Notes: Summary The use of butyl-methyl-methacrylate embedding and the application of the silver methenamine (SM) method as a poststaining of the immunoperoxidase-DAB (IP) procedure led to the standardization of several useful methods for the visualization of tissue antigents at the light and electron microscope level. These procedures included: 1) Standardization of the actual methacrylate embedding; 2) The IP-SM method with an without periodic acid oxidation, which provided 100% intensification of the IP staining; 3) The IP-SM method made it possible to stain semithin sections (0.5 μm), and this in turn, permitted a) clear visualization under the light microscope of the intracellular distribution of antigens and, b) staining, in several adjacent sections, of roughly the same cytoplasmic region of the same cell with different primary antisera; 4) a double immunostaining whereby the first antigen in the sequence was revealed by the IP-SM method and the second by the IP procedure: 5) standardization of the IP and the IP-SM methods for post-embedding staining of ultrathin methacrylate sections. The combined application of methacrylate embedding and the IP-SM, and the use of an appropriate fixative, resulted in an ultrastructural immunocytochemical procedure characterized by a good immunoreactivity of the tissue sections, a strong and selective immunoreaction and a well preserved ultrastructure.

Notes: Abstract The preturbulent region of the Lorenz model is investigated with the aim to determine the attractive region around the stable fixed points as a function of the Rayleigh parameterr. Close to the turbulent threshold, i.e. for small deviations ɛ=r T−r, the attractive region is a highly anisotropic ellipsoid in the phase space. Its volumeV obays the power lawV(ε)=const ɛα with the critical exponent α=5/2. A Landau type approximation, on the other hand, leads to α-3/2. The reason for this discrepancy is discussed. In addition we develop a series expression which allows to calculate the maximal domain of attraction also for large deviations ε. Numerical results from the two lowest terms of the series are represented for 0〈ε≲6.

Notes: Abstract. We analyze the ferromagnetic Ising model on non-Euclidean scale invariant lattices with aperiodic interactions (J A ,J B ,J C ,J D ) defined by Rudin-Shapiro substitution rules with Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization (MKR) and transfer matrix (TM) techniques. The analysis of the invariant sets of the zero-field MKR transformation indicates that the critical behavior, completely distinct from the one of the uniform model, is described by a new off-diagonal fixed point. This contrasts with other aperiodic models where the new critical behavior is described by a period-two cycle. With the new fixed point, values for the thermal critical exponents, $\alpha $ and $\nu$ , as well as the period of log-periodic oscillations, are obtained. Exact recursive maps for all thermodynamical functions are derived within the TM approach. The explicit dependence of the thermodynamical functions with respect to temperature is evaluated by the numerical iteration of the set of maps until a previously chosen convergence is achieved. They also indicate that, depending on the actual choice for the aperiodic coupling constants, the magnetic exponents ( $\beta $ and $\gamma$ ) assume different values. However the Rushbrook relation is always satisfied.

Notes: Abstract Coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) of volatiles produced by male and female West Indian sugarcane weevils (WISW), Metamasius hemipterus sericeus (Oliv.), revealed eight male specific, EAD-active compounds: 3-pentanol (1), 2-methyl-4-heptanol (2), 2-methyl-4-octanol (3), 4-methyl-5-nonanol (4), and the corresponding ketones. In field experiments in Florida, alcohols 1–4 in combination with sugarcane were most attractive, whereas addition of the ketones or replacement of alcohols with ketones significantly reduced attraction. In Costa Rica field experiments testing alcohols 1–4 singly and in all binary, ternary, and quaternary combinations revealed 4 in combination with 2 was the major aggregation pheromone, equally attracting male and female WISW. Stereoisomeric 4 and (4S,5S)-4, the only isomer produced by WISW, were equally attractive. Addition of 4S-, 4R- or (±)-2 to (4S,5S)-4 significantly enhanced attraction. Sugarcane stalks in combination with 2 plus 4 (ratio of 1:8) were highly synergistic, whereas EAD-active sugarcane volatiles ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate, or ethyl butyrate only moderately increased attractiveness of the pheromone lure.

Notes: Summary  We investigate whether the rainfall distribution of a drought prone region is characterized by different scaling properties in comparison to those in temperate regions of the world. We present a Rescaled Range (R/S) analysis of precipitation time series for 21 stations in northeast Brazil. In order to avoid the inclusion of short term variability, the data were smoothed by a moving average procedure. Three different algorithms were applied to the data: the empirical procedure proposed by Hurst; the evaluation of the standard mean deviation around the average profile; the evaluation ofthe mean deviation around the best fit line. The latter two methods have also been used for the evaluation of the nature of surface irregularities (rugosity) in surface profiles. The results obtained by the R/S method point to an average value H=0.709 〉 0.5. This value indicates that the records show a degree of persistence quite close to that found for 10 stations in Spain. It also shows that drought occurrence does not alter the persistence of the rainfall distribution.
