    Description: The rapid formation of a new proton radiation belt at L approximately = 2.5 following the March 24, 1991 Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC) observed at the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) satellite is modeled using a relativistic guiding center test particle code. The SSC is modeled by a bipolar electric field and associated compression and relaxation in the magnetic field, superimposed on a dipole magnetic field. The source population consists of both solar and trapped inner zone protons. The simulations show that while both populations contribute to drift echoes in the 20-80 MeV range, primary conditions is from the solar protons. Proton acceleration by the SSC differs from relativistic electron acceleration in that different source populations contribute and nonrelativistic conservation of the first adiabatic invariation leads to greater energization of protons for a given decrease in L. Model drift echoes and flux distribution in L at the time of injection compare well with CRRES observations.

    Description: This paper discusses the magnetic field topology (determined by the superposition of dipole, image, and uniform fields) for mapping the cusp to the ionosphere. The model results are compared to both new and published observations and are then used to map the footprint of a flux transfer event caused by a time variation in the merging rate. It is shown that the cusp geometry distorts the field lines mapped from the magnetopause to yield footprints with dawn and dusk protrusions into the region of closed magnetic flux.

    Description: This paper compares the electron spectra and phase space densities measured concurrently by ISEE-3 at 200 R(E), with those measured by DMSP at low altitudes. The field-aligned lobe electron phase space densities above 200 eV at ISEE were found to agree well with the DMSP-measured polar rain phase space densities near the polar cap; the spectral slopes above 200 eV were also similar. Below 100-200 eV, a thermal electron population was measured by ISEE in the distant tail, which arose from local entry of plasma through the distant magnetopause, which is not present at DMSP altitudes. These data show that the suprathermal tail lobe electrons are essentially a test particle population which can move freely along field lines to form polar rain; in contrast, the thermal electrons are bound to the tailward-flowing lobe ion population far down the tail and, thus, cannot reach the polar cap regions.

    Description: Data from the low-altitude DMSP spacecraft were used to compare polar rain electron intensities, energy spectra, and time variations at low altitudes with concurrent bidirectional electron properties in the magnetotail measured by ISEE 3. The DMSP-measured polar rain phase space densities near the polar cap agreed well with the field-aligned magnetotail lobe electron phase space densities above about 200 eV.     Description: Akasofu and Tsurutani (1984) have observed very unusual auroral activity on January 10-11, 1983. They employed visible line scan imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F6 satellite to monitor auroral activity over the northern (winter) polar region. Magnetometer data from the ISEE 3 and IMP 8 spacecraft were used to monitor the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation. A number of auroral features which occurred in coincidence with changes in the IMF orientation were noted. The present paper is mainly concerned with the specific occurrence of a broad transpolar are later on January 11, 1983. During this occurrence, the IMF B(z) and B(y) components were positive and stable in time. This report has the objective to use a fortunate orbital configuration of three low-altitude polar orbiting spacecraft to probe the distribution of precipitating plasma responsible for the arc.
