    Notes: Abstract  Despite the increasing interest in the South Atlantic Ocean as a key area of the heat exchange between the southern and the northern hemisphere, information about its palaeoceanographic conditions during transitions from glacial to interglacial stages, the so-called Terminations, are not well understood. Herein we attempt to increase this information by studying the calcareous dinoflagellate cysts and the shells of Thoracosphaera heimii (calcareous cysts) of five Late Quaternary South Atlantic Ocean cores. Extremely high accumulation rates of calcareous cysts at the Terminations might be due to a combined effect of increased cyst production and better preservation as result of calm, oligotrophic conditions in the upper water layers. Low relative abundance of Sphaerodinella albatrosiana compared with Sphaerodinella tuberosa in the Cape Basin may be the result of the relatively colder environmental conditions in this region compared with the equatorial Atlantic Ocean with high relative abundance of S. albatrosiana. Furthermore, the predominance of S. tuberosa during glacials and interglacials at the observed site of the western Atlantic Ocean reflects decreased salinity in the upper water layer.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉In this article, we are proposing an Identification Key for recognition of Quaternary 〈span〉Spiniferites〈/span〉 species and some morphologically close Quaternary taxa of some related genera. We summarize the morphological features of 43 taxa (including three subspecies and one variety) based on the original description of the holotypes and sometimes supplemented by our observations. In addition to the Identification Key, we refer to published illustrations that feature both typical and atypical specimens for each taxon. The compilation of this key gave us the opportunity to reconsider some taxonomic concepts, which resulted in two new combinations and an emendation: 〈span〉Hafniasphaera granulata〈/span〉 (Mao 〈a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/palynology#CIT0065"〉1989〈/a〉) comb. nov., emend. and 〈span〉Hafniasphaera multisphaera〈/span〉 (Price and Pospelova 〈a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/palynology#CIT0101"〉2014〈/a〉) comb. nov. In addition, we recommend that the names 〈span〉Spiniferites nodosus〈/span〉 and 〈span〉Spiniferites pseudofurcatus〈/span〉 subsp. 〈span〉obliquus〈/span〉 be restricted to their holotype.〈/span〉

    Description: The first online modern organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst determination key has been launched at www.marum.de/dinocystkey.html . This key is based on easily recognisable morphological features of dinoflagellate cysts that can be observed using standard transmitted light microscopy. To date, the key includes 96 cyst species that can be found in late Quaternary marine sediments. This key is free of charge to users, and will be continuously updated and improved by the authors. For each individual species of dinoflagellate cyst, the website provides information on its defining morphological characteristics and the cyst–motile stage relationship. It gives a comparison with other morphologically similar taxa, links to publications with original cyst descriptions and outlines their modern global distribution where this information is available. All species descriptions are illustrated by line drawings showing their most distinctive characteristics, and accompanied by high-quality bright-field photomicrographs. The key is compatible with all major computing platforms (including smartphones) and software.

    Description: To obtain insight into the character and forcing of southern Italian climate change during the ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’ ( c . ad 900–1200), marine sediments deposited between ad 990 and 1200 from the Gulf of Taranto have been analyzed for their dinoflagellate cyst content with a 3.5 yr resolution. The reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) appears to be lower than today. We observe a clear 11.4 yr cyclicity in the reconstructed SST series. Furthermore, there is a good matching between SST and global 14 C anomalies. This suggests that solar activity might have had an important influence on the local climate during Medieval time. Short-term fluctuations in accumulation rates of aerobic degradation resistant species that react sensitively on the trophic state of the upper waters and/or are characteristic for river plume waters indicate that the trophic state of the upper waters is closely linked to river discharge, which in turn is strongly related to precipitation in Italy. We reconstruct low river discharge/precipitations in the Adriatic area synchronous to widespread drought events in other nearby subtropical regions. We attribute this to NAO and ENSO related large-scale ocean–atmosphere circulation shifts during the Medieval period. Furthermore, we suggest that eruptions of southern Italian volcanoes might have influenced the local upper water nutrient conditions as well.

    Description: In tropical Eastern Africa, vegetation distribution is largely controlled by regional hydrology which has varied over the past 20 000 years. Therefore, accurate reconstructions of past vegetation and hydrological changes are crucial to better understand climate variability in the tropical Eastern African region. Through high-resolution pollen records from a marine sediment core recovered offshore the Rufiji River, our data show significant shifts in pollen assemblages during the last deglaciation identifying, through respective changes in both upland and lowland vegetation, specific responses of plant communities to atmospheric (precipitation) and coastal (coastal dynamics/sea level changes) alterations. Specifically, an interval of maximum pollen representation of dry and open vegetation occurred during the Northern Hemisphere cold Heinrich event 1 (H1) suggesting the expansion of drier upland vegetation under arid conditions. This dry spell is followed by an interval in which forest and humid woodland expanded, indicating a hydrologic shift towards more humid conditions. Droughts during H1 and the return to humid conditions around ~14.8 kyr BP in the uplands are primarily attributed to latitudinal shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) driven by high-latitude Northern Hemisphere climatic fluctuations. Additionally, our results show that the lowland vegetation, consisting of a well developed salt marshes and mangroves in a successional pattern typical for vegetation occurring in intertidal habitats, has responded mainly to local coastal dynamics related to marine inundation frequencies and soil salinity in the Rufiji Delta as well as the local moisture availability. Lowland vegetation shows a substantial expansion of mangrove trees after ~14.8 kyr BP suggesting also an increased moisture availability and river runoff in the coastal area. The results of this study highlight the de-coupled climatic and environmental processes to which the vegetation in the uplands and the Rufiji Delta has responded during the last deglaciation.

    Description: A valid assessment of selective aerobic degradation on organic matter (OM) and its impact on OM-based proxies is vital to produce accurate environmental reconstructions. However, most studies investigating these effects suffer from inherent environmental heterogeneities. This includes differences in the initial OM composition, as a result of variable upper water column conditions, or from those induced by selective aerobic degradation. In this study, we used surface samples collected along two meter-scale transects and one longer transect in the northeastern Arabian Sea to constrain initial OM heterogeneity, in order to evaluate selective aerobic degradation on temperature, productivity and alteration indices at the sediment-water interface. All of the alteration indices, the higher plant alkane index, alcohol preservation index, and diol oxidation index, demonstrated that they are sensitive indicators for changes in oxygen content at the sediment-water interface. The export production indices, a cholesterol-based stanol/stenol and dinoflagellate lipid- and cyst-based ratios, showed significant (more than 20%) change over the lateral oxygen gradients. Therefore, they do not exclusively reflect surface water productivity, but can be altered after deposition with varying oxygen content at the sediment-water interface. Two of the investigated proxies, the glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGT) based TEX86 sea surface temperature indices and a productivity index based on phytol, phytane and pristane, did not show any trends related to oxygen concentration at the sediment-water interface. Nevertheless, unrealistic sea surface temperatures were obtained after application of the TEX86, TEX86L, and TEX86H proxies. The phytol-based ratios were likely modified by the sedimentary production of pristane. Our results demonstrate the rapid and selective impact of aerobic organic matter degradation on the lipid and palynomorph composition of surface sediments on a small spatial scale and suggests useful tracers of changing redox conditions along the sediment-water interface.
