Abstract: This edited volume dedicated to late Prof. P.S. Saklani addresses the multidisciplinary themes pertaining to role of tectonism and magmatism in Crustal Evolution and global distribution of metallic and non metallic mineral deposits. It gives valuable information on geodynamic evolution, structural, petrological, isotopic, metamorphic, geochemical and geochronological attributes of continental and oceanic crust and is challenging reassessments of the existing paradigms. It addresses the implication of magmatism, metallogeny and application of geochronological ages (U-Pb SHRIMP age, Lu-Hf isotopic system; detrital zircons). This book also advocates the role of tectonics in contamination of ground water, and control on drainage pattern and geothermal systems. It explores the vulnerability of earth towards natural hazards viz. earthquakes, floods, cyclones, tsunami, volcanism, cyclones and drought. This volume throws light on the applications of remote sensing, GIS (Geographical Information System) and SRTM data for evaluation of the morphometric and morphotectonic parameters and exploring the susceptibility of river basins toward erosion and flood. It will be beneficial to graduate and post-graduate students as well as professionals and researchers.

Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted to elucidate the effects of chronic low power-level microwave radiation on the immunological systems of rabbits. Fourteen male Belgian white rabbits were exposed to microwave radiation at 5 mW/cm2, 2.1 GHz, 3 h daily, 6 days/week for 3 months in two batches of 7 each in specially designed miniature anechoicchambers. Seven rabbits were subjected to sham exposure for identical duration. The microwave energy was provided through S band standard gain horns connected to a 4K3SJ2 Klystron power amplifier. The first batch of animals were assessed for T lymphocyte-mediated cellular immune response mechanisms and the second batch of animals for B lymphocyte-mediated humoral immune response mechanisms. The peripheral blood samples collected monthly during microwave/sham exposure and during follow-up (5/14 days after termination of exposures, in the second batch animals only) were analysed for T lymphocyte numbers and their mitogen responsiveness to ConA and PHA. Significant suppression of T lymphocyte numbers was noted in the microwave group at 2 months (P〈0.01, Δ% 21.5%) and during follow-up (P〈0.01, Δ% 30.2%). The first batch animals were initially sensitised with BCG and challenged with tuberculin (0.03 ml) at the termination of microwave irradiation/sham exposure and the increase in foot pad thickness (Δ mm), which is a measure of T cell-mediated immunity (delayed type hypersensitivity response, DTH) was noted in both the groups. The microwave group revealed a better response than the control group (Δ%+12.4 vs.+7.54). The animals were sacrified and the tissue T lymphocyte counts (spleen and lymph node) were analysed. No significant variation was observed in the tissue T lymphocyte counts of microwave-irradiated rabbits. From these results it is speculated that the T lymphocytes are sequestered to various lymphoid organs under the influence of microwaves. A sub-population of T cells known as T helper cells (mediating DTH response) are probably not affected by microwave radiation. It is clear from our experiments that although chronic microwave radiation at 5 mW/cm2 leads to suppression of peripheral T lymphocyte numbers, there is no concomitant functional impairment of these cells as evidenced by functional assays.

Notes: Summary Acetylacetone bis-benzoylhydrazone (PhCONHN=CMe)2 CH2(LH2) and acetylacetone bis-isonicotinoylhydrazone (NC5H4CONHN=CMe)2CH2(L′H2) complexes of the types [ML] and [ML′] (M = CoII, NiII, CuII or ZnII) have been prepared and characterized. All the complexes are non-electrolytes and the cobalt(II) complexes are lowspin, the nickel(II) complexes are diamagnetic and the copper(II) complexes are paramagnetic. The ligands chelate via two C=N groups and two deprotonated enolate groups. The e.s.r. spectra of the copper(II) complexes indicate a tetragonally distorted dimeric structure. The X-ray diffraction parameters for [CoL] and [NiL′] correspond to a tetragonal crystal lattice.

I 3 − +nTHF $$\mathop \rightleftharpoons \limits^K$$ AAI+//I 3 − ;GBI+, I 3 + +nTHF $$\mathop \rightleftharpoons \limits^K$$ AAI+//I 3 − ;GBI+//I 3 − . Dabei wurde herausgefunden, daß ein einzelnesTHF-Molekül zwischen Kation und Anion eingeschoben ist.
Notes: Abstract Electrical conductance, refractometric and differential refractometric techniques have been used to study the charge-transfer interaction of some biomolecules with chloranil and iodine, and their ion-pair separation. A mechanism of transformation of outer complex to inner complex has been suggested. The coexistence of intimate and solvent-separated ion-pairs in equilibrium in binary mixtures of dioxan—THF is indicated for these complexes. The equilibrium constant (K) and solvation number (n) for the equilibria;AAI+, I 3 − +nTHF $$\mathop \rightleftharpoons \limits^K$$ AAI+//I 3 − ;GBI+, I 3 − +nTHF $$\mathop \rightleftharpoons \limits^K$$ AAI+//I 3 − ;GBI+//I 3 − , have been calculated and it was found that a singleTHF molecule has managed to intercalate between cation and anion.

Notes: Abstract Since, linking of ovine luteinizing hormone (oLH) to ribosome inactivating protein gelonin (in oLH-gelonin conjugate) occur via the alpha-subunit, αoLH, an attempt has been made to develop a ‘universal’ hormonotoxin for selective targeting to specific cells in the gonads. Four different molar ratios of oLH and N-succinimidyl-3-(2-pyridyldithio) propionate (SPDP) were used to activate the epsilon amino (ψ-NH2) groups of αoLH. The αoLH-SPDP derivatives recombine to native beta subunit of oLH (βoLH) and the purified recombinants retained substantial receptor binding, steroidogenic activity and immunoreactivity to native oLH. The disulfide linked αoLH-S-S-gelonin conjugates prepared by SPDP method were purified by gel filtration chromatography and analysed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). In order to obtain specificity and bioeffectivity, the αoLH-S-S-gelonin conjugates were allowed to recombine to native βoLH and the recombination mixture was further purified by gel-filtration chromatography. The RP-HPLC analysis of these recombinants indicated that αoLH-S-S-gelonin did not recombine to βoLH. The failure of recombination may be due to the reasons. (i) The site of ε-NH2 activation by SPDP may be different in the αoLH than the native oLH. (ii) The activation site may be in close proximity to the annealing site which facilitates the recombination of β-subunit but failured to reassociate to αoLH-S-S-gelonin conjugate. (iii) The introduction of gelonin (30 kDa basic protein) might have induced some steric hinderence for βoLH to recombine to the αoLH site which might have been masked in αoLH-S-S-gelonin conjugates.
