Beschreibung: The radiation belts of the Earth, filled with energetic electrons, comprise complex and dynamic systems that pose a significant threat to satellite operation. While various models of electron flux both for low and relativistic energies have been developed, the behavior of medium energy (120–600 keV) electrons, especially in the MEO region, remains poorly quantified. At these energies, electrons are driven by both convective and diffusive transport, and their prediction usually requires sophisticated 4D modeling codes. In this paper, we present an alternative approach using the Light Gradient Boosting (LightGBM) machine learning algorithm. The Medium Energy electRon fLux In Earth's outer radiatioN belt (MERLIN) model takes as input the satellite position, a combination of geomagnetic indices and solar wind parameters including the time history of velocity, and does not use persistence. MERLIN is trained on 〉15 years of the GPS electron flux data and tested on more than 1.5 years of measurements. Tenfold cross validation yields that the model predicts the MEO radiation environment well, both in terms of dynamics and amplitudes o f flux. Evaluation on the test set shows high correlation between the predicted and observed electron flux (0.8) and low values of absolute error. The MERLIN model can have wide space weather applications, providing information for the scientific community in the form of radiation belts reconstructions, as well as industry for satellite mission design, nowcast of the MEO environment, and surface charging analysis.
Beschreibung: Plain Language Summary: The radiation belts of the Earth, which are the zones of charged energetic particles trapped by the geomagnetic field, comprise complex and dynamic systems posing a significant threat to a variety of commercial and military satellites. While the inner belt is relatively stable, the outer belt is highly variable and depends substantially on solar activity; therefore, accurate and improved models of electron flux in the outer radiation belt are essential to understand the underlying physical processes. Although many models have been developed for the geostationary orbit and relativistic energies, prediction of electron flux in the 120–600 keV energy range still remains challenging. We present a data‐driven model of the medium energies (120–600 keV) differentialelectron flux in the outer radiation belt based on machine learning. We use 17 years of electron observations by Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. We set up a 3D model for flux prediction in terms of L‐values, MLT, and magnetic latitude. The model gives reliable predictions of the radiation environment in the outer radiation belt and has wide space weather applications.

Notizen: The acceleration of charged particles to suprathermal energies is investigated in the context of magnetospheric substorms. Ion and electron test particle orbits are studied in dynamically evolving fields obtained from a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of reconnection in the near magnetotail. The simulation leads to plasmoid formation and ejection into the distant tail and an earthward collapse of the field in the inner tail. Energization of particles takes place predominantly in the inner tail region earthward of the neutral line, rather than in the vicinity of the neutral line. The test particle studies reproduce major observed characteristics of energetic particle flux increases ("injections") in the inner magnetotail; a fast rise, a limited energy range of the flux increases, and spatially varying delays between the onsets of ion and electron injections. Acceleration mechanisms include a "quasipotential" acceleration, resulting from nonadiabatic particle motion in the direction of the cross-tail electric field, as well as betatron and Fermi-type acceleration. The major source region for accelerated ions (electrons) in the hundreds of keV range is the central plasma sheet at the dawn (dusk) flank, outside the reconnection site. Since this source plasma is already hot and dense, a moderate energization by a factor of approximately 2 is sufficient to explain the observed increases in the energetic particle fluxes. Differences between ions and electrons at energies of a few tens of keV are found to be associated with differences in the bounce periods, which enables ions to circumvent the acceleration region, so that only electron fluxes in that energy range become enhanced. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Tl-based superconducting thick films deposited on large-area (11.4 cm2) Ag alloy (Consil 995) substrates have been characterized by surface resistance measurements yielding values of 4 and 14 mΩ at 4 and 77 K, respectively, as measured in an 18 GHz Cu cavity; corresponding Cu values are 8 and 21 mΩ. Utilizing a Nb cavity, the dependence of surface resistance on microwave power was also measured. The surface resistance begins to rise in microwave magnetic fields of 1–10 Oe and saturates in 20–60 Oe, the exact values depending on the degree of c-axis texturing of the polycrystalline films. Enhanced texturing sharpens the high-frequency transition into the superconducting state and also weakens the dependence of surface resistance on microwave magnetic field. These results are significant for high temperature superconductor applications such as microwave cavities.

Notizen: Surface resistance measurements on Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O thick films (∼15 μm) magnetron sputtered onto BaF2-buffered, silver-based (Consil 995) substrates have been made at a microwave frequency of 22 GHz. The relatively large-area films (∼5 cm2) are characterized by surface resistance values of 6.9±2 mΩ at 11.3 K and 30.2±1 mΩ at 77 K; the corresponding values for Cu are 10 and 22 mΩ, respectively. These results demonstrate that Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O can be deposited onto large-area, metallic substrates with characteristic surface resistance values lower than Cu at 4 K. Orientation of the film should improve the surface resistance at 77 K, thereby making the fabrication of microwave cavities that are superior to Cu possible.

Notizen: Rapid thermal vacuum processing (RTVP) has been employed to form silicides of titanium on both single and polycrystalline silicon. Resistivity values as low as 13 μΩ cm were obtained for reaction temperatures in the range 600–900 °C for various times (≤30 s). For the lower temperature (600 °C) the conversion to TiSi2 was observed through both physical (Rutherford backscattering) and electrical (four-point-probe) techniques. The native oxide of silicon was also seen to be broken up by the thermal treatment and the oxide moving to the surface to form a stable thin TiO2 surface layer. Unlike previous reports of the formation of titanium silicides in gas we have observed a clean sharp silicon-silicide interface.

Notizen: The resistivity and interfacial characteristics of Pd/Zn/Pd/Au and Pd/Zn/Au/LaB6/Au contacts to p-In0.53Ga0.47As have been investigated. Annealing of the contacts at 375–425 °C yielded a minimum in specific contact resistance, ρc, of 2×10−7 Ω cm2 for the Pd/Zn/Pd/Au contacts and 1×10−6 Ω cm2 for the Pd/Zn/Au/LaB6/Au configuration. The measurement of ρc for the Pd/Zn/Pd/Au system is the lowest reported for an ohmic contact to p-In0.53Ga0.47As doped to ≤1×1019 cm−3. In the Pd/Zn/Au/LaB6/Au scheme, the minimum in ρc was the same whether the Zn was incorporated as a structural layer or as Zn ions implanted into the interfacial Pd. At ≥375 °C, the LaB6 layer limited the indiffusion of Au and the degradation of the In0.53Ga0.47As substrate. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The diffusion behavior of arsenic implanted into silicides of titanium formed on single and polycrystalline silicon has been investigated. The redistribution of arsenic in the films is significant, and physical and electrical data show that the implanted arsenic moves through the silicide layer, particularly towards the silicide-silicon interface at the 900 °C temperature under study. In the case of single-crystal silicon, accumulation of the mobile arsenic at the TiSi2-Si interface leads to a buildup within the silicide and the silicon. By sharp contrast, however, the TiSi2-polysilicon interface appears relatively transparent with no significant accumulation. The resultant dopant profiles outside the silicide show that significantly enhanced diffusion occurs in the single-crystal silicon and is comparable to that of the polycrystalline silicon.
