Notes: Purpose - The authors propose focusing on e-commerce service failure and recovery through the presentation of failure and recovery strategies employed by e-commerce service firms. Design/methodology/approach - The authors employ the critical incident technique using 377 customer responses to present ten e-tail failures and 11 e-tail recovery strategies used by e-commerce service firms. The authors also present data on post-recovery satisfaction levels and propensity to switch behavior. Findings - Findings indicate that: e-tail customers experience different types of service failure relative to traditional retail settings; e-tail firms employ a different series of recovery strategies relative to traditional retail settings; and post-recovery switching by e-tail customers can be high even with satisfying experiences. Originality/value - This paper strengthens the existing failure and recovery literature by presenting data on the largest growing sector of the service industry. These findings will have value to traditional firms looking to expand to e-commerce channels in addition to e-commerce firms currently experiencing customer dissatisfaction.

Notes: Purpose - Seeks to provide empirical support for the "brand personality effect", that is, the direct influence that brand personality will have on a variety of consumer-driven outcomes. Design/methodology/approach - Tests a series of hypotheses using experimental research design with 192 subjects. Findings - Support is found for all proposed hypotheses. These findings indicate that brand personality will have a positive influence on product evaluations and that subjects exposed to a brand's personality will have a significantly greater number of brand associations; significantly greater proportion of brand associations; significantly greater unique brand associations; significantly greater proportion of congruent brand associations; and significantly greater proportion of strong brand associations. Practical implications - This paper conceptually establishes brand personality and empirically demonstrates the brand personality effect on consumer-based outcomes. This finding strengthens the brand personality literature and establishes a baseline study for future empirical research. Originality/value - Brand personality has received levels of research from academics and practitioners alike, but this research presents the first empirical test of the direct effect of brand personality and how it drives consumer behavior.

Notes: Abstract— Residual stress distribution in the vicinity of fatigue cracks was determined experimentally by means of the X-ray method and theoretically calculated by finite element analysis. Both the intensity and the extent of residual stress increase with the increasing stress intensity factor amplitude. There is good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

Notes: High-cycle-fatigue/creep experiments were performed on a 9%Cr-1%Mo temperered marten-site ferritic steel at 873 K in air. The stress ratio R=σmin/σmax ranged from-1 (“pure” fatigue) to 1 (“pure” creep). The maximum stress σmax was kept constant at 240 MPa. The lifetime depends on the stress ratio R in a non-monotonic way.In the stress ratio interval 0.6 〈 R 〈 1.0 both the creep strain rate and the lifetime are controlled by mean stress σmassof the stress cycle. In the stress ratio interval — 1 〈 R 〈 0.2 the lifetime is controlled by the stress amplitude na. The fatigue/creep interaction occurs in between these intervals. The fatigue/creep loading induces transformation of the tempered martensite ferritic structure into an equiaxed subgrain structure. The resulting subgrain size depends strongly on the stress ratio.

Notes: The fact that very small notches (cavities, holes, scratches, etc.) have no effect on the fatigue limit of metallic materials is well known. This paper presents both a qualitative explanation for the existence of non-damaging notches and a quantitative derivation of their critical sizes. The condition for a notch (characterized by the stress concentration factor Kt and the notch root radius ρ) to be non-damaging in a metallic material (characterized by a critical crack size l0) is(K2t− 1)ρ≤ 4.5 l0.The critical crack size can be expressed with good approximation in terms of the threshold stress intensity for fatigue crack growth and the plain fatigue limit. Therefore the above relation can be applied for an engineering evaluation of non-damaging notches. Test results obtained for copper and a pressure vessel steel demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.

Notes: Abstract— The notch size effect (i.e. the decrease of the notched fatigue limit with increasing notch size for the same stress concentration factor) was quantitatively derived by describing the threshold conditions for the propagation of a short semi-elliptical crack nucleated at the notch root. A close relation between the Kitagawa—Takahashi diagram for the short crack threshold stress and the dependence of the notched fatigue limit on the notch size was shown. The derived relation for the notch size effect was experimentally verified for several specimen/notch geometries in the cases of pressure vessel steel and copper.

Notes: Several specific features of high-cycle fatigue (HCF) and ultra-high-cycle fatigue (UHCF) are discussed both on the basis of direct experimental results and on the basis of speculations extrapolating HCF data to the UHCF regions. The following points are dealt with: (i) Extent and distribution of cyclic plastic deformation. (ii) Sensitivity of the fatigue behaviour in the HCF and UHCF regions to the start-up procedure of the test and to the preceding stress–strain history. (iii) Role of persistent slip bands (PSBs) and the microcrack initiation in the HCF and UHCF regions. (iv) Dependence of the notch sensitivity on the amplitude of cycling. (v) Effect of high number of very small amplitude cycles on creep behaviour of superalloy single crystals.

Notes: The effectiveness of employing an elastically bent perfect Si (111) crystal as a monochromator for neutron-diffraction experiments is demonstrated on rocking curves presented for a flat perfect Si (220) crystal and a mosaic Fe (110) crystal, for two different collimations of the incident beam. For the sake of comparison equivalent rocking curves with a conventional mosaic Zn monochromator are also introduced. The experimental results obtained indicate that curved perfect-crystal monochromators may become a useful alternative to mosaic-crystal ones.
