Notes: Abstract— From the engineering point of view no reliable lifetime prediction method exists, which would enable the life expectancy of structures to be calculated with sufficient accuracy. One of the primary drawbacks of current approaches is their obvious inability to adequately include into an engineering calculation scheme basic knowledge of the microstructural response to cyclic loads during each of the stages of the fatigue process. This article gives a brief introduction into the Consecutive Wöhler Curve Approach which, it is suggested, is capable of predicting with enhanced accuracy fatigue life under varying amplitude conditions. The load interaction behaviour, which is intimately connected with the material's microstructure, is included through “fatigue functions” which are derived from two-step Wöhler tests.

Description / Table of Contents: The GRIGNARD reaction between silicon halides and alkyl-Mg-halides with steric hindering alkyl groups does not run in the usual manner. Thus from SiBr4 and secondary or tertiary butyl—MgBr only the corresponding butyl-tribromosilanes (C4H9)SiBr3 could be prepared in low yields. To a great extent, there are side reactions which produce silanes with Si—H-bonds by developing butene (C4H8) and high molecular polysilanes with, Si—Si-bonds by cleaving off octane (C8H18).

Description / Table of Contents: By reaction of sulphates with boric acid and sulphur trioxide bis(sulphato)borates: MeI[B(SO4)2]2, MeII[B2O(SO4)2]2 and tris(sulphato)diborates: MeII[B2O(SO4)3], could be prepared. These substances are very hygroscopic and sensitive to hydrolysis. Probably they are ionic compounds with high-polymeric anions.

Description / Table of Contents: The reactivities of the Si—H-, Ge—H-, and Sn—H-bond regarding the alkaline solvolysis are investigated on equal conditions and compared. From this results a great solvolysis sensibility of the stannanes, a surprisingly great resistivity however of the germanes in alkaline solution. Silanes and stannanes have different reaction mechanisms of solvolysis.

Description / Table of Contents: The reactions during the thermial treatment (200°C) of p-substituted diphenyl-silanediols are investigated. Besides the normal condensation of silanoles, a cleavage of Si—C bonds by means of silanolysis is found. The dependence of the partial reactions on the substituents of the organogroups is explored and interpreted by I- and M-effects.

Description / Table of Contents: By means of several trialkyl and differently substituted triphenyl silanes of the general formula R3SiH, systematic investigations on the hydrolysis velocity and its dependence from R have been undertaken. The rate constants show an evident and partly great gradation regarding the different model substances. From this, deductions are made about the character of the Si - H-bond and the reaction mechanism of solvolysis.
