    Notes: The thermal degradations of 1-(N-ethylanilino)-3-phenoxyprop-2-yl acetate, trifluroacetate, and methyl ether were studied. Major products were characterized. 1-(N-Ethylanilino)-3-phenoxypropan-2-ol in which the hydroxyl hydrogen was replaced with deuterium was degraded and the extent of deuteration of the one product, N-ethyl-N-methylaniline, was measured by mass spectrometry. The results were used to investigate the mechanism of the thermal degradation of 1-(N-ethylanilino)-3-phenoxy-propan-2-ol, a model compound for the cure linkage in aromatic amine-cured epoxide resins.

    Notes: Poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) was synthesized by free-radical initiation to yield a 1:1 copolymer over a 0.2-0.8 mole fraction range of monomer feed in maleic anhydride. Evidence of 1:1 charge transfer complex between 4-vinylphenylacetate and maleic anhydride was obtained in the UV region at 355 nm. The 13C NMR chemical shifts and 1H NMR integration data indicate that poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) has an alternating and stereoregular structure. The molecular weight of poly(4-vinylphenylacetate-co-maleic anhydride) was controlled by using specific solvents and initiator concentrations.

    Notes: Batch and continuous fermentations with Clostridium thermoaceticum (ATCC 39073) using automatic pH control were conducted. The value of μmax obtained from batch fermentation was about 0.14 h-1; acetate yield, which was both growth and non-growth associated, was about 2 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose, compared with a theoretical maximum value of 3. This low yield, compared with literature data, may be explained by glucose loss through a combination of degradation routes. Continuous fermentation could be sustained for 1600 h or more without contamination problems. Continuous fermentation at high dilution rates indicates that μmax may be well above 0.17 h-1 when fresh feed medium is used. Acetate yields in continuous fermentation were about 77% of theoretical or 2.3 mole of acetic acid/mole of glucose.

    Notes: The degradation in vacuo of the cured resin from stoichiometric amounts of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and p,p′-diaminodiphenylmethane was studied at temperatures of 303.7 and 304.0 ± 0.2°C. The condensible products of the degradation at these temperatures were collected and the major components were isolated as pure compounds. These were identified as water, bisphenol A, 2-(benzofur-5-yl)-2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane, N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-p,p′-diaminodiphenylmethane, phenol, p-isopropylphenol, p-isopropenylphenol, N,N-dimethylaniline, N-methylaniline, N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, benzofuran, and N-methyl-p-toluidine. The presence of 2,2-bis(benzofur-5-yl)propane was suspected. The gaseous degradation products were identified as acetaldehyde, chloromethane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ethane, ethene, and nitrogen. Tentative reaction mechanisms are proposed to account for the formation of the products identified. The possible nature of some of the minor degradation products is discussed. The results are related to those of previous studies of the degradation of the same and similar resin-hardener systems.

Degradation products were characterized. The thermal stability of the glyceryl group relative to that of the cure linkage in aromatic amine-cured epoxide resins is discussed.

    Notes: This paper describes the nonoxidative thermal degradation of an epoxide resin based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A crosslinked with p,p′-diaminodiphenyl methane. Temperatures of degradation lay between 200 and 310°C. and the process was followed concurrently by three means: changes in dielectric properties, changes in infrared spectra, and weight loss. Dielectric properties support the contention that there is a dehydration step during degradation. It is proposed that vacuum curing at high temperature can produce optimum crosslinking. Evidence of phenol and N-methyl aniline as degradation products is advanced, and possible degradation mechanisms are discussed.
