Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to compare the conditions for the general error-optimality of linear systems developed by Kalman with the conditions for feasibility of linear models of neuromuscular and physiological control systems. Models of three actual physiological systems are tested for both the above criteria. Theoretical analysis presented here shows that there are no simple relationships between the two sets of conditions. Analysis carried out on the physiological systems models suggests the need for a general set of conditions for other optimality criteria, such as time and energy minimization, similar to Kalman's condition for error minimization.

Notes: Abstract A model for the human eye-movement mechanism is derived. The derivation is based on a literature search directed toward identifying and mathematically describing each component through physiological and anatomical considerations. It is felt that although certain parameter values may not be exactly correct (for the data were taken from a wide variety of animals), we can place a great deal of confidence in the configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The author investigates the principal asymptotic expansion of the measure of approximation of particular singular integrals having a non-negative kernel with respect to the approximation of continuous, 2π-periodic functions belonging to theLipschitz classes Lip 2 * 1 (or Lip1 1) and Lip 2 * 2. A simple connection between the measure of approximation of a singular integral and the moments of the corresponding kernel enables one to calculate these expansions in an elementary way using the associated convergence factors. Thereby a more precise comparison of the quality of approximation by various kernels is possible. In particular the first generalized kernel ofJackson andFejér's kernel are considered.

Notes: Abstract The spectral emissivity of titanium has been measured over a temperature range from 1100 °K to approximately the melting point. Discrepancies in the data as reported by several authors are discussed with respect to the surface conditions of the metal investigated.

Notes: Summary Ectopic eyes were produced on the fleshfly,Sarcophaga bullata by transplantation of imaginal eye discs. Electrophysiological and histological observations of these supernumerary eyes indicate the absence of synaptic connections between retinular cells and higher order neurons.

Notes: Abstract The 1.4–22.4 Å range of the soft X-ray spectrum includes a multitude of emission lines which are important for the diagnosis of plasmas in the 1.5–50 million degree temperature range. In particular, the hydrogen and helium-like ions of all abundant solar elements with Z 〉 7 have their primary transitions in this region and these are especially useful for solar flare and active region studies. The soft X-ray polychromator (XRP) is a high resolution experiment working in this spectral region. The XRP consists of two instruments with a common control, data handling and power system. The bent crystal spectrometer is designed for high time resolution studies in lines of Fe i-Fe xxvi and Ca xix. The flat crystal scanning spectrometer provides for 7 channel polychromatic mapping of flares and active regions in the resonance lines of O viii, Ne ix, Mg xi, Si xiii, S xv, Ca xix, and Fe xxv with 14″ spatial resolution. In its spectral scanning mode it covers essentially the entire 1.4–22.5 Å region. This paper summarizes the scientific objectives of the XRP experiment and describes the characteristics and capabilities of the two instruments. Sufficient technical information for experiment feasibility studies is included and the resources and procedures planned for the use of the XRP within the context of the Solar Maximum Mission is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the quantum size effect (QSE) in very thin Pd and Au films (0.5〈d〈10 [nm]) deposited on glass tips is studied by means of field emission at various anode potentials. The thickness-dependent field emission current characteristics show short periodic variations with a period of about 0.3 nm for both Pd and Au. The measured QSE oscillations and their amplitudes differ strongly from those expected qualitatively from model calculations for the smallest thicknesses. A model for the metal film based on a modification of the uniform background model is presented, and the thickness dependence of the conductance and the field emission current density are qualitatively discussed. Possible explanations of some discrepancies between calculations and the measured field emission current characteristics are proposed.
