Beschreibung: Cosmic-ray muon radiography is a technique for imaging the variation of density inside the top few 100m of a volcanic cone. With resolutions up to 10s of meters in optimal detection conditions, muon radiography can provide images of the top region of a volcano edifice with a resolution that is considerably better than that typically achieved with conventional methods. Such precise measurements are expected to provide us with information on anomalies in the rock density distribution, like those expected from dense lava conduits, low density magma supply paths or the compression with depth of the overlying soil. The MU-RAY project aims at the construction of muon telescopes and the development of new analysis tools for muon radiography. The telescopes are required to be able to work in harsh environment and to have low power consumption, good angular and time resolutions, large active area and modularity. The telescope consists of two X–Y planes of 2x2 square meters area made by plastic scintillator strips of triangular shape. Each strip is read by a fast WLS fiber coupled to a silicon photomultiplier. The readout electronics is based on the SPIROC chip.

Beschreibung: The MU-RAY project has the challenging aim of performing muon radiography of the summit cone of Mt. Vesuvius. The muon telescopes developed for this purpose will be available for the radiography of other volcanoes, in particular Stromboli. The scientific goals, the strategy for their implementation and the baseline detector design are discussed in detail. A tentative time schedule for the project is drawn.

Notizen: Temperature dependence of magnetism in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic instability point of amorphous Fe has been investigated on the basis of the finite temperature theory of amorphous metallic magnetism which takes into account the transverse spin degrees of freedom. The theory is based on the functional integral technique to the degenerate-band Hubbard Hamiltonian and the distribution function method for local magnetic moments with structural disorder. Numerical calculations have been performed with decreasing temperature near the boundary between the ferromagnetic and the spin glass phases. It is shown that the amorphous metals around Fe exhibit the transition from the collinear to the noncollinear ferromagnetic state at a temperature lower than the Curie temperature, due to the freezing of transverse spin components. The present results are consistent with those of recent Mössbauer measurements on Fe-rich amorphous transition metal alloys. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Noncollinear magnetism in the vicinity of amorphous Fe has been investigated by developing the finite temperature theory of amorphous metallic magnetism which takes into account the transverse spin fluctuations. The theory is based on the functional integral technique to the degenerate-band Hubbard Hamiltonian with Hund's rule coupling and the distribution function method for local magnetic moments with structural disorder. It is shown that an isotropic spin-glass is realized in amorphous Fe, by taking into account the transverse components of local magnetic moments. The origin of the spin-glass around amorphous Fe is explained by the nonlinear magnetic couplings between Fe local moments and the local environment effects on the amplitude of Fe local moments. When the d electron number N is increased, the isotropic spin-glass changes to a noncollinear ferromagnet at N=7.40 and finally changes to a collinear ferromagnet beyond N=7.47 at 35 K. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Spontaneous magnetization and paramagnetic susceptibility have been measured for the Rn+1Co3n+5B2n compounds with R=Y, Gd, and Dy and n=1, 2, and 3 in the temperature range from 4.2 up to 1000 K in fields up to 20 kOe. The data on the Gd system are analyzed based on the molecular field model. The exchange field at the Gd site from the Co sublattice is estimated. The averaged exchange field at T=0 K is estimated to be 101 T for n=1, 75T for n=2, and 56 T for n=3. Paramagnetic susceptibilities are fairly well expressed by the superposition of the Co- and the Gd-sublattice contributions. Other magnetic properties of the Y and the Gd system are also reported. Only magnetic data are given for the Dy system. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Novel deposition behavior was observed when 1,4-dicyanobenzene was sublimed onto copper micropatterns on silicon wafer. On the patterns copper-phthalocyanine whiskers and debris of similar size were formed and preferentially oriented along or perpendicular to the copper lines. The directional growth was confirmed to have nothing to do with crystal axis of the silicon, but was considered to be due to the periodic structure of the copper lines.

Notizen: We describe the effect of back reflections on the relaxation-oscillation peaks of low threshold (〈6 mA), high intrinsic bandwidth (31 GHz) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. With the largest feedback possible with our experimental arrangement, x=−5.8 dB, the relaxation-oscillation peak breaks up into a series of sharp resonances with the spacing corresponding to the round tip frequency of the external cavity. In contrast to edge emitting lasers, no effect of reflections is observed for feedback levels x〈−12.9 dB. This relative immunity of vertical cavity lasers to reflection noise is expected to be of interest for their applications to fiber communications.

Notizen: We report room-temperature measurements of the spontaneous emission factor β in high-quality gain-guided GaAs/AlGaAs vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. In devices with 6-μm diameter we obtain β=2.8×10−3. The measured scaling of β with the cavity volume agrees well with classical electromagnetic model of dipole radiation. The magnitude of β exceeds that predicted by classical theory by approximately a factor of 2.

Notizen: We describe a simple technique to precisely measure the reflectivity spectra of the Bragg mirrors in individual vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. Detailed reflectivity spectra are obtained by measuring the response of the active layer junction to light impinging upon the output mirror, corrected by the active layer response spectrum. Precise measurements of the emission spectrum of the laser with respect to the Fabry–Perot notch are then possible. In the temperature range of 20–100 °C we measure the rates of 0.56 and 0.62A(ring)/°C for the mirror stack and the lasing wavelength, respectively.
