Notes: A study of the efficiencies of two plate distillation columns is reported. One column had three rectangular trays with a flow path length of about 1 m, the other was a modified glass Oldershaw column with one tray of 38 mm dia. Tray efficiencies were measured in both columns and point efficiencies were deduced for the rectangular column. The systems studied were ternary and quaternary mixtures of alcohols and water. The results showed that for thermodynamically nonideal systems significant differences existed among the individual component point efficiencies. In the case of an ideal system the component point efficiencies were effectively equal, but tray efficiencies were different due to differing volatilities and composition profiles across the large trays. This study illustrates the need to allow for the above effects in large-column designs for multicomponent systems. The possibility of using laboratory-scale point efficiencies in these designs is explored.

Notes: The chemistry that underlies positive imaging, Image Reversal (ImRe) and Built In Mask (BIM), has been investigated. For this purpose the photoactive compound 2, 1 -diazonaphthoquinone-5-(4-cumylphenyl)-sulfonate (PAC-5), the corresponding indenecarboxylic acid (ICA-5) and the decarboxylated derivative of ICA-5 (indene), were isolated and characterized. The study revealed that dissolution of ICA-5 in aqueous base developers gives rise to the formation of an indenyl carboxylate dianion, which decarboxylates in several hours. In the case that ICA-5 is dissolved in weakly alkaline media or in organic solvents such as methanol, the formation of this ion does not occur, but the rate of decarboxylation is almost the same. It is suggested that the decarboxylation reaction proceeds via the indene carboxylate monoanion, which reacts to indenyl anion. The latter is a strong base and is readily protonated to give indene (two isomers). In the case of aqueous base this leads to precipitation of the indene. In agreement with the finding that the indene derived from ICA-5 does not dissolve in aqueous base developers, it was found that mixing indenes into novolak has a considerable inhibitive effect on the dissolution rate of a layer of this material in aqueous base. After a bake (in ImRe this would be the reversal bake), the dissolution rate is almost the same as for unexposed photoresist. Similar experiments with mixtures of novolak and indenecarboxylic acid revealed that there is no difference in the dissolution rate of such layers as compared with exposed photoresist. This excludes the putative effect of porosity, caused by nitrogen extrusion. In the case that 1-phenyl-3-morpholinotriazene is added to the photoresist (in order to produce a dye in the BIM concept), azo-dyes are formed by coupling of diazonium ions on the 1- and 3-position of 3-indenecarboxylic acid. The paper starts with a brief review of the mechanisms of photolysis of 2, 1 -diazonaphthoqui nones, as have been proposed in the literature. Although the formation of ketene as an intermediate is generally accepted, there appears to be no consensus about the existence of carbene.

Notes: NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopy show that a novel tetrathiol ligand, based on the cavitand diphenylglycoluril, encapsulates a 4Fe-4S cluster and induces asymmetry in it. The cluster gives a weak electrochemical current response in DMF, with a half-wave potential for the 2-/3- reduction vs. Fc+/Fc of -1.7 V. Ba2+ ions are adsorbed, according to X-ray analysis of the SEM image of the electrode, and act as modulator and promoter of the electrochemical response. On the basis of cyclic voltammograms it is proposed that this adsorption creates electroactive sites, changing the type of diffusion controlling the mass transport to the electrode from radial to linear, and that it helps the negatively charged complex, which contains a dipole, to approach the negative electrode in an orientation favourable for electron exchange. This feature makes the complex an important model for ferredoxins, in spite of a difference in redox potential.

Notes: Although fibers are subject to complex deformations during processing and end use, most research has concentrated on tensile properties. We have extended our studies to include the ultimate torsional properties, i.e., the breaking twist angle (BTA), and the flexural fatigue life of single fibers. We now have sufficient data on diverse fiber types that we may compare their mechanical properties. Thus, in this paper we report the mechanical properties of the different starting, untreated, fibers, tested under fiducial conditions. We then develop and consider some interrelationships between these selected single fiber physical properties.

Notes: Thermal lithography on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is carried out by inducing crystallization through selective exposure of amorphous films to Infrared radiation. The obtained images can be smaller than the wavelength of the CO2 laser light. This circumvention of the diffraction limit is accomplished by taking advantage of the non-linear temperature dependence of the crystallization rate. The optical marking process is reversible through simple melting of the crystalline images. The complementary process, selective melting of an initially crystalline film, can also be accomplished. The use as a heat sink of a mask which forms the image pattern is demonstrated.

Notes: Complex hydrodynamic behavior of circulating fluidized beds makes their scale-up very complicated. In particular, large-scale lateral solids segregation causes a complex two-phase flow pattern which influences significantly their performance. Lateral solids segregation has been attributed to direct collisional interactions between particles as well as to interaction between gas-phase eddies and dispersed particles. However, these phenomena have not been investigated thoroughly. This article discusses an advanced 2-D hydrodynamic model developed for circulating fluidized beds based on the two-fluid concept. Because theory to model the interaction between gas-phase eddies and dispersed particles is not available, turbulence was modeled on a macroscopic scale using a modified Prandtl mixing length model. To model the influence of direct particle-particle collisions the kinetic theory for granular flow was applied based on the Chapman-Enskog theory of dense gases. For model validation purposes, a cold flow circulating fluidized bed was employed in which sand was transported with air as fluidizing agent. The column is equipped with pressure transducers to measure the axial pressure profile and with a reflective optical fiber probe to measure the local solids concentration and axial solids velocity. Theoretically calculated solids concentration and axial solids velocity agree satisfactorily with experiment, especially when one realizes that the model contains no adjustable parameters. In general, however, the model slightly underpredicted the experimentally observed lateral solids segregation and yielded a more peaked velocity profile compared to its experimental counterpart.

Notes: Transient phenomena in solid-liquid fluidized-bed systems are important in designing pulsed, countercurrent (multistage) fluidized-bed contactors of the Cloete-Streat type at high-solids flow rate. Of particular interest are the residence times or corresponding velocities of porosity gradients in the bed and the excess or overshoot height of the bed after refluidization. Theory assuming local equilibrium between holdup and velocity of the phases (local-equilibrium model) for stepwise perturbations in the liquid flow is readily available. It is investigated whether the local-equilibrium theory can be used for more complex perturbations and whether inertia effects, such as are encountered in countercurrent multistage fluidized-bed systems, can be ignored. Therefore, the detailed particle-bed model of Foscolo and Gibilaro, which incorporates inertia effects, was applied to investigate the transient behavior of fluidized-bed systems. Transient fluidization experiments were performed with a broad range of water-fluidized particles in a laboratory-scale multistage fluidized-bed contactor. The operating conditions corresponded to those for countercurrent contact.Numerical simulations with the particle-bed model predict satisfactory experimental results. The “overshoot” heights of the fluidized bed were estimated correctly by the particle-bed model, whereas the local-equilibrium model only provides a conservative estimate. However, the local-equilibrium model allows an analytical solution that is more interesting for design, as it avoids tedious calculations. The residence time of the last perturbation before the fluidized bed relaxes to steady state was estimated with similar accuracy by both models.
