    Description: The weakest explosive volcanic eruptions globally, Strombolian explosions and Hawaiian fountaining, are also the most common. Yet, despite over a hundred years of observations, no classifications have offered a convincing, quantitative way of demarcating these two styles. New observations show that the two styles are distinct in their eruptive time scale, with the duration of Hawaiian fountaining exceeding Strombolian explosions by similar to 300-10,000 s. This reflects the underlying process of whether shallow-exsolved gas remains trapped in the erupting magma or is decoupled from it. We propose here a classification scheme based on the duration of events (brief explosions versus prolonged fountains) with a cutoff at 300 s that separates transient Strombolian explosions from sustained Hawaiian fountains.

    Description: Described are instruments currently under development for measuring thermospheric winds in situ from a cubesat-class platform. While the primary measurement target is 3D winds, the instruments also return temperature and density measurements, as well as composition information. The instruments are based on mechanical modulation of the rammed flow of the ambient gas. They are similar to larger instruments designed for use on larger platforms, but are accommodated for cubesats with less mass, volume, and power. The principles of measurement and performance models are presented and discussed, and compared to the performance of larger instruments. Prototype designs and plans for laboratory testing are described.

    Notes: The restricted-to-free rotator phase transition of fatty acid monolayers has been modeled using a potential which represents the amphiphiles as planar cross sections of fourfold symmetry. Using much larger system sizes than paper I [D. R. Swanson, R. J. Hardy, and C. J. Eckhardt, J. Chem. Phys. 99, 8194 (1993)], Monte Carlo simulations of the isobaric–isothermal ensemble of model systems with varied number of objects were undertaken to study the effect of system size on the characteristics and order of the phase transition. A peak in the specific heat vs temperature curve was observed near the transition. For each system size, the maxima of the peak showed a linear dependence on the area, which is characteristic of a first order transition. The latter is further confirmed from the observation of a small "van der Waals'' loop by increasing the volume at a constant temperature. The result of this simulation matches the qualitative behavior of experimental observations of monolayers, which undergo a weakly first order transition. Additional similarity with experiment was found by the determination that the simulated superfluid phase has the short range translational order and quasilong range bond orientational order characteristic of a hexatic phase. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Model amphiphiles consisting of lines of Lennard-Jones (LJ) centers are investigated to determine the effect of pressure and molecular geometry on ground-state tilting behavior. Both the amphiphile length and the intramolecular distance between LJ centers is varied. The results give guidelines for understanding and controlling tilting behavior in monolayer films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic flux surfaces of the Compact Auburn Torsatron have been experimentally mapped in a variety of magnetic configurations. The magnetic surface mapping was done using the phosphor screen technique. The results are compared with an extensive computer model in order to validate the design coil structure and determine what modifications are needed to correct any minor winding errors. In initial field mapping experiments, a large up–down asymmetry was identified in the vacuum magnetic surfaces. A set of mapping studies was used to characterize the error through addition of terms to the coil winding law. The error was corrected with the use of a radial trim coil.

    Notes: The possibility of a solution of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations as a time-dependent problem in a tokamak geometry at ω∼ωci is studied. The major approximations in the analysis are the following: small Larmor radius relative to the wavelength, particle orbits deviate little from a magnetic surface during the time of the dominant contribution to the orbit integral. This direct integration becomes possible due to a rapid growth of the computing power and the development of multiprocessing. A proper description of the plasma dielectric properties in this time-dependent approach is made. Due to a limited computing power and not completely optimized procedure applied in the analysis, the time evolution of Maxwell equations is limited to cases of relatively small perpendicular wave numbers. The results demonstrate that it is computationally feasible to perform a direct integration of the time-dependent Vlasov–Maxwell equations in a tokamak geometry on a substantially long time interval. The directions of the further optimization of this method are discussed and the suggestions for the further analysis are made. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The propagation and absorption of Alfvén waves at ω(approximate)ωci is studied in a straight nonuniform helical plasma with elliptical cross section, placed in an inhomogeneous l=2 magnetic field created by helical windings. The model antenna with a spectrum of kz induces the m=+1 poloidal harmonic. In a uniform plasma in a uniform magnetic field the antenna excites the m=+1 fast wave fields. These fields are right-handed almost everywhere in the plasma and they are not absorbed by plasma ions. In the nonuniform helical l=2 magnetic field under certain conditions the antenna excites mostly the m=+1 fast wave and left-handed m=−1 slow wave fields. The coupling between these waves in the nonuniform magnetic field leads to the excitation of the left-handed wave field component near the plasma center and to the heating of plasma ions by this wave component. Collisionless absorption by plasma ions is assumed. The power deposition distribution in the plasma is examined for different plasma parameters. Results demonstrate that effective heating of the central part of the plasma at ω=ωci is possible for the low density plasmas in small scale devices. Because of the restrictions in the model, no firm conclusions can be made about the effectiveness of this method for high density plasmas in large scale devices. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
