Description / Table of Contents: Successful Vaccines -- Immunogenicity and Immunodominance in Antibody Responses -- Immunogen Design -- Adjuvants -- Tools to screen vaccines -- Targeting glycans on human pathogens for vaccine design -- BnAbs and highly antigenically variable pathogens.
Abstract: Vaccines against antigenically stable pathogens, or pathogens that only exist in a limited number of serotypes, have been very successful in the past and have drastically decreased the incidence and lethality of many diseases. However, when it comes to highly variable pathogens or viruses that exist in multiple serotypes, the traditional methods for vaccine development have reached their limits. This volume highlights the development of vaccines against such challenging pathogens. Novel approaches for immunogen design, including structure-guided vaccine development and vaccines targeting glycans, as well as adjuvants and animal models used for testing possible vaccine candidates are outlined and discussed in detail. Given its scope, the book will appeal to scientists in the fields of infectious diseases, microbiology and medicine. .

Abstract: With more than 1,400 species, bats are an incredibly diverse and successful group of mammals that can serve as model systems for many unique evolutionary adaptations. Flight has allowed them to master the sky, while echolocation enables them to navigate in the dark. Being small, secretive, nocturnal creatures has made bats a challenge to study, but over the past 50 years, innovative research has made it possible to dispel some of the mystery and myth surrounding them to give us a better understanding of the role these animals play in the ecosystem. The structure of the book is based on several broad themes across the biological sciences, including the evolution of bats, their ecology and behavior, and conservation of biodiversity. Within these themes are more specific topics on important aspects of bat research, such as morphology, molecular biology, echolocation, taxonomy, systematics, threats to bats, social structure, reproduction, movements, and feeding strategies. Given its scope, the book will appeal to the wider scientific community, environmental organizations, and government policymakers who are interested in the interdisciplinary aspects of biology and nature.

Description / Table of Contents: 1. Introduction -- 2. Inter-national examples of Water Hazards -- 3. Tactics and examples against sea-level rise -- 4. Application of tactics in scenarios -- 5. From risks to opportunities Outcome, outlook.
Abstract: This book presents and discusses a strategy which includes four approaches to dealing with the risk of sea-level rise and other water hazards. It also offers opportunities for cities to explore urban extensions such as marine estates, aquatic food production systems, new sea related industries, maritime transport developments, new oceanic tourist attractions, and the designation of additional coastal ecological zones. The urban interface between Sea and Cities generates, therefore, both burning issues and valuable opportunities and raises the question of whether it is possible to solve the former by exploiting the latter?

Description / Table of Contents: Aerial photographic surveys of Adélie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, were undertaken in January 1982 and December 1988 at Mawson and the Rookery Islands group (Specially Protected Area (SPA) 2), Mac.Robertson Land. Twenty-three islands were photographed. Comparisons with census data collected in 1972-73 indicate a 15% increase in the number of Adélie penguins breeding in the area, from approximately 71 500 ± 7620 pairs in 1972-73 to at least 82 500 ± 8250 pairs in 1988-89. The population on Rookery Island, within the SPA, increased by 46% between 1972-73 and 1988-89, representing almost 85% of the total increase recorded for the entire SPA. The populations on islands near Mawson appear to have remained stable. These results highlight the value of long-term, annual monitoring efforts to explicate population changes.

Description / Table of Contents: A twelve month sampling program was conducted in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica to determine the coastal marine fauna of the area. A species list of the animals inhabiting the benthic, pelagic, planktonic and ice / water interface communities investigated is presented with ecological information about each collection site. Most of the collected species appear to be circumpolar and some information is provided on their distribution within the Vestfold Hills region.
