Beschreibung: Ferrosilite-fayalite bearing charnockite and biotite-hornblende bearing granite are exposed in Mühling-Hofmannfjella, central Dronning Maud Land of East Antarctica. Both are interpreted as essentially parts of a single pluton in spite of their contrasting mineral assemblages. Based on petrologic and geochemical studies, it is proposed that H2O-undersaturated parent magma with igneous crustal component that fractionated under different oxygen fugacity conditions resulted in the Mühlig-Hofmannfjella granitoids.

Beschreibung: Knowledge of the spatio-temporal changes in the characteristics and distribution of subsurface fluids is key to properly addressing important societal issues, including: sustainable management of energy resources (e.g., hydrocarbons and geothermal energy), management of water resources, and assessment of hazard (e.g., volcanic eruptions). Gravimetry is highly attractive because it can detect changes in subsurface mass, thus providing a window into processes that involve deep fluids. However, high cost and operating features associated with current instrumentation seriously limits the practical field use of this geophysical method. The NEWTON-g project proposes a radical change of paradigm for gravimetry through the development of a fieldcompatible measuring system (the gravity imager), able to real-time monitor the evolution of the subsurface mass changes. This system includes an array of lowcosts microelectromechanical systems-based relative gravimeters, anchored on an absolute quantum gravimeter. It will provide imaging of gravity changes, associated with variations in subsurface fluid properties, with unparalleled spatio-temporal resolution. During the final ∼2 years of NEWTON-g, the gravity imager will be field tested in the summit of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy), where frequent gravity fluctuations, easy access to the active structures and the presence of a multiparameter monitoring system (including traditional gravimeters) ensure an excellent natural laboratory for testing the new tools. Insights from the gravity imager will be used to i) improve our knowledge of the causeeffect relationships between volcanic processes and gravity changes observable at the surface and ii) develop strategies to best incorporate the gravity data into hazards assessments and mitigation plans. A successful implementation of NEWTON-g will open new doors for geophysical exploration.

Beschreibung: A damaging earthquake of Mw 7.7, which struck the Bhuj region of India on January 26, 2001, was followed by a large number of aftershocks. The aftershock data available at Gauribidanur Seismic Array Station (GBA), India, till 869 h following the main shock were compiled. The plot of the aftershocks rate with time was found to be oscillatory decay. There was a sharp decrease of the aftershocks rate in the initial 144 h from the main shock and this paper presents the analysis of the temporal characteristics of aftershock activity during this period. Astatistical best fit for the rate of aftershocks is performed using the generalised Omoris law and the exponential decay law. The statistical errors for the exponential fit are found to be lower than that of the generalised Omori's fit. The superimposed oscillations present in the aftershock activity are extracted by differencing the observed aftershock activity from the statistical fits. The frequencies of these oscillations are found to be 0.062 h1, 0.078 h-1, 0.102 h-1, 0.118 h-1, 0.141 h-1, 0.164 h-1, 0.233 h-1 and 0.476 h-1. Some of the plausible causes for this kind of oscillations present in the aftershock activity are also discussed in this paper.

Notizen: It is shown with correlated magnetic resonance and electrical measurements that the PIn antisite is the prevailing defect in InP grown by molecular-beam epitaxy at low temperature. The first ionization level of the PIn antisite is resonant with the conduction band, which makes the material n-type conducting due to autoionization of the PIn antisite.

Notizen: We have investigated the annealing temperature dependence of structural and electrical properties in heavily arsenic implanted GaAs which has a similar amount of excess arsenic to low temperature GaAs (LT-GaAs). The fundamental properties of this material are quite similar to those of LT-GaAs. High resolution x-ray diffraction measurements have revealed that it has an increased lattice constant, which is reduced to the value of bulk GaAs by annealing between 300 and 400 °C. Electrical conduction in this material is dominated by hopping between deep states, which is also reduced by annealing above 350 °C. In samples annealed at temperatures ranging from 600 to 850 °C, the dominant electron trap is EL2; it has been confirmed by resistivity measurements with n-i-n structures that the Fermi level is pinned by EL2. In samples annealed below 500 °C, the dominant electron trap is not EL2 but the U-band, although electron paramagnetic resonance measurements show the existence of a large concentration of the ionized arsenic antisite defect (AsGa+). This supports the notion that the U-band is formed by AsGa defects with slightly modified carrier emission properties compared with EL2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
