Beschreibung: This book evaluates whether or not we can decide on the best theory of concepts by appealing to the explanatory results of cognitive science. It undertakes an in-depth analysis of different theories of concepts and of the explanations formulated in cognitive science. As a result, two reasons are provided for thinking that an appeal to cognitive science cannot help to decide on the best theory of concepts.

Beschreibung: This book’s research is on online pedagogical approaches devised by teacher educators and researchers to circumvent a face-to-face curriculum delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenge faced by educators was that they were uncertain of how to use digital technologies in teaching, learning and assessment productively. This book reports on case studies on teaching student teachers with technology in a way that advanced not only communication but also the cognitive growth of students in relation to disciplinary knowledge. The scholars from South African universities used both conceptual and empirical methodologies, mostly in qualitative set-ups. The scholarly contributions in this book are varied. They cover theoretical nuances for ICT use in education, considerations for the use of computers in the classroom, pedagogical thinking and pedagogical integration of ICTs in education, affordances of iPads in visible teaching and learning, supporting student cognition in Languages, Mathematics, Science, Engineering Graphics and Design with ICTs. The use of software applications such as GeoGebra and Excel in teaching and learning mathematics is researched, among others. The rich discussions that emerged from their research enable academics to learn from ‘others’ innovative moments that came as a result of pandemic pressure. The recommendations in this book can be used in blended learning beyond the COVID-19 era, as curriculum delivery methods are bound to change. The value of this book is that it reports on pedagogical innovations in using digital technologies in teacher education. Researchers have an opportunity to learn from this book how to deal with the tantalising teaching and learning problem of our time: How can the use of digital technology transform teaching and learning in general and teacher education in particular?

Notizen: A comparative analysis of soils and vegetation from cultivated areas reseeded to native grasses and native prairies that have not been cultivated was conducted to evaluate restoration of southern mixed prairie of the Great Plains over the past 30 to 50 years. Restored sites were within large tracts of native prairie and part of long-term grazing intensity treatments (heavy, moderate, and ungrazed), allowing evaluation of the effects of grazing intensity on prairie restoration. Our objective was to evaluate restored and native sites subjected to heavy and moderate grazing regimes to determine if soil nutrients from reseeded cultivated land recovered after 30 years of management similar to the surrounding prairie and to identify the interactive influence of different levels of grazing and history of cultivation on plant functional group composition and soils in mixed prairies. For this mixed prairie, soil nitrogen and soil carbon on previously cultivated sites was 30 to 40% lower than in uncultivated native prairies, indicating that soils from restored sites have not recovered over the past 30 to 50 years. In addition, it appears that grazing alters the extent of recovery of these grassland soils as indicated by the significant interaction between grazing intensity and cultivation history for soil nitrogen and soil carbon. Management of livestock grazing is likely a critical factor in determining the potential restoration of mixed prairies. Heavy grazing on restored prairies reduces the rate of soil nutrient and organic matter accumulation. These effects are largely due to changes in composition (reduced tallgrasses), reduced litter accumulation, and high cover of bare ground in heavily grazed restored prairies. However, it is evident from this study that regardless of grazing intensity, restoration of native prairie soils requires many decades and possibly external inputs to adequately restore organic matter, soil carbon, and soil nitrogen.

Notizen: Environmental and human health issues associated with outdoor air pollution, such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, and other pollutants in metropolitan regions, are an area of growing concern for both policy officials and the general public. Increasing attention from the news media, new health data, and public debate over the effectiveness of clean air regulations have raised the importance of air quality in the public consciousness. While public perceptions of air quality have been studied thoroughly dating back to the 1960s, little empirical research has been conducted to explain the spatial aspects of these perceptions, particularly at the local level. Although recent studies suggest characteristics of local setting are important in shaping perceptions of air quality, the roles of proximity, neighborhood characteristics, and location have not been clarified. This study seeks to improve understanding of the major factors shaping public perceptions of air quality by examining the spatial pattern of local risk perception, the role of socioeconomic characteristics in forming these perceptions, and the relationship between perceived and scientifically measured air pollution. First, we map the spatial pattern of local air quality perceptions using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) across the Dallas and Houston metropolitan areas. Next, we explain these perceptions through local contextual factors using both bivariate correlations and multivariate regression analysis. Results indicate that perceptions of air quality in the study areas are not significantly correlated with air quality based on readings of air monitoring stations. Instead, perceptions appear to be influenced by setting (urban vs. rural), state identification, access to information, and socioeconomic characteristics such as age, race, and political identification. We discuss the implications of the findings and provide direction on how further research can provide a deeper understanding of the local contextual factors influencing public perceptions.
