Notes: The first OCTOPUS electron cyclstron resonance (ECR) multicharged heavy ion source was built in 1985 at the Centre de Recherches du Cyclotron of the University of Louvain (Belgium). This first source used an ECR frequency of 14.3 GHz in the injector stage and 8.5 GHz in the main confinement stage. A new OCTOPUS source has now been built for a new cyclotron to be installed at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). The design of this new OCTOPUS source is identical to the first OCTOPUS source, but uses an ECR frequency of 6.4 GHz in the main confinement stage. The experimental results are described, and a comparison is made between the two sources. However, the available data does not allow any clear conclusion to be drawn on frequency scaling.

Notes: The formation process of point defect clusters in high-purity (99.999%) iron as a typical bcc metal under the irradiation with low-energy (5 keV)He+ is studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Using conventional TEM techniques, clusters induced by the irradiation are determined to be interstitial-type dislocation loops (I loops) at temperatures ranging from 85 to 770 K and cavities from 300 to 770 K. Most of the I loops are determined to lie on {100} planes, and their Burgers vector are determined to be a[100]. The temporal variation in the volume density of I loops is measured by stereomicroscopy at several temperatures. The volume density of I loops is about two orders of magnitude higher in comparison with the case of high-energy electron irradiation at the same dpa rate; hence, it is deduced that helium atoms have an effect enhancing the nucleation of I loops. The depth distribution of the loop densities becomes broad above around 235 K at which vacancies become thermally mobile, and the dependence of loop formation on He+ beam flux is weak. From these results, it is suggested that helium-vacancy complexes act as trapping sites of self-interstitial atoms and I-loop nucleation is enhanced. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source under development since. 1994 has a solenoid coil between a pair of mirror coils to vary the mirror ratio over a wide range. The solenoid coil of the original design formed a small bump in the bottom of the mirror field profile when the source parameters were optimized for high charge states. Source performance in generating highly charged ions improved with a number of minor changes on the vacuum, the gas feed, and the beam extraction system. The maximum beam current of Ar16+ was 2 enA, which was much lower than that expected from the microwave frequency and the magnetic field strength. Little effect of a biased disk on intensities of highly charged ions and dependence of the charge state distribution on the solenoid coil current suggested that the bump divided plasma into two regions and limited the source performance. The bump was removed by halving the solenoid coil length, and the beam current of Ar16+ increased to 1.3 eμA as a result. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A beam chopping system for a cyclotron is in operation at the JAERI cyclotron facility. A combination of a pulse voltage chopper in the injection line and a sinusoidal voltage chopper after the exit of the cyclotron is adopted to produce beam pulses spaced at 1 μs–1 ms intervals from natural cyclotron beams. The chopping system was designed according to a simple formulation of the chopping process in which the multiturn extraction was taken into account. Performance of the chopping system was experimentally proved to satisfy requirements of the design. In actual operation to produce beam pulses at long intervals, however, the number of the multiturn extraction is usually larger than the assumed value in the design because of a large phase acceptance of the cyclotron. Careful tuning of the acceleration phase width or the base magnetic field of the cyclotron is necessary to reduce it. It is essential to strictly define the acceleration phase of injected beams in the central region of the cyclotron to improve this situation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source for multiply charged ions was constructed and is now in operation. A new distribution of the mirror field was adopted, and minimum strength is varied by a solenoid coil installed between the mirror coils. The measured mirror field distribution is close to the designed distribution and its maximum strength exceeds 1.4 T. The source is now being tuned by use of Ar ion generation. The relatively high base pressure in the plasma chamber has been improved by installing an additional vacuum pump. The source performance has been maturing gradually with the vacuum and Ar ions with charge states of up to 13+ have been observed so far. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a time pickup system for monitoring the beam bursts from a cyclotron. The time pickup can measure the phase and the width of the beam bursts by detecting secondary electrons emitted from a foil or a wire target inserted into the beam with time resolutions around 200 ps full width at half maximum in spite of its simple structure. By using the foil and the wire targets appropriately, monitoring the bursts of a variety of beams can be achieved. In addition, by adjusting the position of the target, a high enough detection rate of the beam burst is obtained with a minimum of interference with the beam. The present investigation shows that it is needed to adjust the collection voltage of the time pickup because the optimum collection voltages for high resolution measurement are in the range from −0.5 to −1.0 kV and those for high efficiency measurement are not less than −4.0 kV. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A study was performed to examine whether or not betaine (glycinebetaine), a compatible solute, is accumulated in response to cold stress and is involved in mechanisms that protect plants from freezing injury. For this purpose, we used near-isogenic lines of barley, with each line differing only in a single gene for the spring type of growth habit; the various lines were produced by back-crosses to a recurrent cultivar of the winter type. The winter type of growth habit requires a low temperature for triggering of flower development (vernalization), whereas the spring type does not. Betaine was accumulated to five times the basal level over the course of 3 weeks at low temperature (5 °C) in the winter-type cultivar and in a spring-sh line having the sh gene for the spring-type growth habit, but the level was only doubled in the spring-Sh3 line, which carried the Sh3 gene for the spring-type growth habit. Among near-isogenic lines of the same cultivar, the levels of betaine accumulated in leaves at low temperature were well correlated with the percentages (on a dry weight basis) of green leaves that survived freezing injury (-5 °C). This observation indicates the possibility, separate from the recognized role of betaine in the response to salinity and/or drought, that betaine accumulates in response to cold stress and that the accumulation of betaine during cold acclimation is associated to some extent with freezing tolerance in leaves of barley plants.

Notes: Seasonal evaluation of total soluble protein fractions extracted from cortical parenchyma cells of mulberry (Morus bombycis Koidz.) tree identified a predominant 18 kDa protein that was directly correlated to periods of cold acclimation. The 18 kDa protein, designated as WAP18 (winter accumulating 18 kDa proteins) increased from September to December and then gradually decreased until June. The maximum levels of WAP18 were detected in mid-winter, which corresponds to the maximum freeze tolerance in cortical parenchyma cells of mulberry tree. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis confirmed that WAP18 consists of at least three proteins that range between an isoelectric point of 5.0 and 6.0. All three proteins reacted with anti-WAP18 antibodies, thereby suggesting that they represent individual isoforms. Furthermore, N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis demonstrated that all three proteins contain high sequence similarity to each other and high homology to pathogenesis-related (PR) −10/Bet v 1 protein families. The purified WAP18 exhibited in vitro cryoprotective activity for the freeze labile l-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme. These results suggest that WAP18 may function in the freezing tolerance mechanism of cortical parenchyma cells of mulberry tree during winter.
