Notes: Summary Since little is known of the number and types of binding sites on α1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) and because drug-drug protein binding interactions often fail to fit a simple model, a study of the effect of 9 known AAG binding drugs on lidocaine free fraction (LFF) was performed. Serum was obtained from 10 healthy males, pooled and various concentrations (from 0.15 to 1 000 µg/ml) of amitriptyline, bupivacaine, chlorpromazine, disopyramide, imipramine, meperidine, nortriptyline, propranolol and quinidine were added. LFF was determined by equilibrium dialysis at an initial lidocaine concentration of 2.0 µg/ml. LFF increased from 0.30±0.019 (mean ± SD) in the absence of displacing agents to maximum values ranging from 0.59 (nortriptyline) to 0.73 (bupivacaine). Plots of LFF vs. the logarithm of displacing drug concentration yielded simple sigmoidal curves in all cases. LFF was increased 50% by an initial bupivacaine concentration of 6.0 µg/ml with all other drugs requiring more than 10 µg/ml to increase LFF to that extent. Lidocaine binding in a 4.5 g/dl albumin solution was unaffected by concentrations of quinidine, meperidine, nortriptyline and bupivacaine up to 200 µg/ml. Addition of AAG to serum reduced LFF as expected. A plot of the reciprocal of bound drug concentration vs. the reciprocal of free drug concentration in the presence and absence of quinidine suggested a competitive binding interaction. These data indicate that the binding interactions between lidocaine and the various displacing compounds are not significantly complicated by cooperative effects and that, with the possible exception of bupivacaine, displacement of lidocaine by any of these drugs is unlikely to be of clinical significance.

Notes: Abstract A general theory of eddy current flaw response, appropriate to both standard low frequency and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) probes, is developed for simple two-dimensional and three-dimensional open and closed surface flaw geometries. This analysis, based on the assumption of a uniform interrogating field applied to the flaw by the probe, shows that flaw opening responses increase with the operating frequency of the probe. Experimental results using both types of probe confirm this result for realistic practical geometries, where variations of crack mouth opening displacement under load provide useful information about crack dimensions.

Notes: Abstract This work deals with the displacement of end-anchored copolymers by the addition of solvent displacer. The adsorption behavior of functionalized polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymers from dilute solution in toluene using silicon wafers as solid substrates is investigated by means of null-ellipsometry. The desorption phenomena are observed by adding displacers of low molecular weight to the mixture. The displacers used are tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetone. The critical composition of the binary solvent mixture at which the desorption is complete, is determined experimentally.

Notes: Abstract Comments are made about the model employed by Chen and Vafai for forced convection in a porous medium channel, with a surface tension effect at the moving interface between two fluids, when one fluid is displaced by the other. A simple situation is analysed, and the circumstances under which surface tension effects are important in this case are clarified.

Notes: This paper presents a substructuring-frontal combined algorithm for the analysis of fully coupled heat, moisture and displacement problems in unsaturated soil. The method adopted for solving the assembled matrix equations has a significant bearing on the computer storage requirement and execution time. Numerical examples are given to validate the proposed model. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Earthquake Early Warning and Rapid Response Systems (EEWRRS) should be a viable complement to other disaster risk reduction strategies, particularly in economically developing countries. The „Early Warning and Impact Forecasting“ group (GFZ, section 2.6) is actively involved in the development of novel strategies to develop scientific and technological solutions that may be efficiently applied in countries with limited resources. The proposed solution includes a risk estimation module that extracts from a portfolio of precomputed impact scenarios those matching the characterization of the event detected by an optimized real-time monitoring network. The real-time network integrates both local, on-site components based on low-cost, smart sensor platforms, as well as regional, sparse strong-motion stations. This hybrid solution allows for the optimization of the lead-time and is tailored to the seismotectonic features of the considered region. A prototype EEWRR System is being developed for the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of the partner CAIAG and in collaboration with the Ministry of Emergency Solutions of the Government of the Kyrygz Republic (MES). Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code AD.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Building monitoring and decentralized, on-site Earthquake Early Warning system for the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek. Several low cost sensors equipped with MEMS accelerometers have been installed in eleven buildings within the urban area of the city. The different sensing units communicate with each other via wireless links and the seismic data are streamed in real-time to data centres at GFZ and the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geoscience (CAIAG) using internet. Since each sensing unit has its own computing capabilities, software for data processing can be installed to perform decentralised actions. In particular, each sensing unit can perform event detection tasks and run software for on-site early warning. If a description for the vulnerability of the building is uploaded to the sensing unit, this can be exploited to introduce the expected probability of damage in the early-warning protocol customized for a specific structure. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code KD.
