    Notes: Closed-ampoule Zn diffusion in InP results in a net acceptor concentration that is much smaller than the Zn concentration. After subsequent annealing of InP in an atmosphere without Zn, the Zn and net acceptor concentrations have become almost identical, due to a decreased Zn concentration and an increased net acceptor concentration. The annealing treatment gives rise to a decreased contact resistivity. The diffusion depth has not changed. Annealing with a SiN cap on the InP surface does not have this effect on the concentrations. These annealing effects also take place in InGaAsP on InP layers. The results can be explained quantitatively by assuming that Zn is incorporated as both substitutional acceptors and interstitial donors and that only the interstitial Zn is driven out by the annealing, owing to its large diffusion coefficient. Profiles calculated with this interstitial-substitutional model can be fitted to experimental profiles assuming Zn to diffuse as singly ionized interstitial donors. This model can also describe earlier reported results on Zn diffusion in n-type InP for which a profile cutoff is found at a depth where the acceptor concentration equals the background donor concentration and in which the acceptor solubility is higher than in undoped InP.

    Notes: Summary The major pathways of energy flow in Lake Nakuru (East Africa) are presented. The trophic structure of this equatorial alkaline-saline lake shows no predictable long term continuity. During the five years of this study it had a bloom of Spirulina platensis that persisted at least two years, it had periods with low algal densities and in addition it had various transitional phases with dramatic fluctuations of species composition and density. The Spirulina platensis bloom is characterized by a rich and almost unialgal bloom of the cyanophyte Spirulina platensis minor, with a mean biomass of 3,500 kJ m-3 (20 kJ ≈ 1 g dry weight). Net photosynthetic rates were very high at depths with optimal light conditions (230 kJ m-3 h-1), but algal self-shading made integrated rates modest (45 kJ m-3 24 h-1) relative to the high biomass. Of the eight primary consumers only five species contributed significantly to the consumer biomass of 220 kJ m-3: the flamingo Phoeniconaias minor, the cichlid fish Sarotherodon alcalicus grahami, the copepod Lovenula africana, the dipteran larva Leptochironomus deribae, and the rotifer Brachionus dimidiatus. Consumption rates were ≈50% of net photosynthetic rates, production rates ≈10%. Secondary consumers (90% being the pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus and the Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber) had a biomass of about 6.8 kJ m-3. Pelicans consumed almost the whole fish production (7.5 metric tons wet weight/day). At low algal densities the lake had a more diverse algal population but a reduced mean biomass of 1,500 kJ m-3 and mean net photosynthetic rates of 12 kJ m-3 24 h-1. Primary consumer species diversity and biomass were also reduced. Consumption rates sometimes exceeded primary production rates. Rotifers probably contributed ≈50% to total consumption and ≈75% to total secondary production but the estimates of their role is speculative as the relative contributions of algae, bacteria and detritus to rotifer consumption are not known. Transitional phases are characterized by rapidly changing abiotic and biotic conditions with algal breakdowns and sudden population peaks at all levels. Rotifers dominated secondary consumers, they contributed 25% to the total biomass of 380 kJ m-3, 90% to the total consumption rate of 290 kJ m-3d-1 and 95% to the total production of 41 kJ m-3d-1. The discussion focusses on problems of measuring primary production in alkaline-saline lakes, and the control of producer and consumer densities. The difficulty in assessing the importance of bacteria and rotifers is emphasized. Also questions of ecological stability and efficiency are addressed. Finally, some recommendations for conservational policy are included.

    Notes: Summary A putty-clay vintage model has been estimated for five industrial sectors: food, beverages and tobacco manufacturing; textiles, clothing and footwear manufacturing; chemical industry and oil refineries; metal manufacturing, and total manufacturing. Substitutabilityex ante between labour and capital appeared to be small in the first four sectors, with textiles, clothing and footwear manufacturing as an exception. Substitutabilityex ante in total manufacturing industry is rather high: an elasticity of substitution of −0.74. Embodied technical progress is strong in all industrial sectors. In textiles, clothing and footwear manufacturing and in total manufacturing it is both labour- and capital-augmenting in nature. In the other sectors it is mainly of the labour-augmenting variety.

    Notes: We report a developmental sequence in the type and frequency of behaviours of neurons differentiating in vitro. We characterised these changes with extensive analysis of time-lapse sequence from both the continuing cell line phenochromocytoma PC12 and primary mixed cell culture of cat and mouse central nervous system. PC12 cells activated by nerve growth factor (NGF) differentiate in a uniform and synchronous manner. This allowed the first quantification of changes in different neuron behaviours during morphogenesis.Shortly after NGF activation, PC12 cells are highly labile in morphology and exhibit a large variety of morphological behaviours. During the first week of differentiation, the frequency of these behaviours declines, and gross morphology becomes more stable. The frequency of neurite initiation after 1 week in NGF is one-seventh what it was after 2 days in NGF. Over the same period, neurite retraction declines to one-third, and somal migration ceases altogether. Growthcone activity does not decline during development. These behaviour changes correlate with published data on the differentiation of the neurite cytoskeleton.A qualitatively similar ontogeny was noted in the differentiation of CNS neurons in mixed cell culture. Major differnces occur in the relative timing of changes in behaviours. Mature, stable morphology is not detected in these cultures until 7 weeks in vitro.
