Notes: Abstract  The product of the Wilms' tumor gene WT1 is a transcription factor overexpressed not only in leukemic blast cells of almost all patients with acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoid leukemia, and chronic myeloid leukemia, but also in various types of solid tumor cells. Thus, it is suggested that the WT1 gene plays an important role in both leukemogenesis and tumorigenesis. Here we tested the potential of WT1 to serve as a target for immunotherapy against leukemia and solid tumors. Four 9-mer WT1 peptides that contain HLA-A2.1-binding anchor motifs were synthesized. Two of them, Db126 and WH187, were determined to bind to HLA-A2.1 molecules in a binding assay using transporter associated with antigen processing-deficient T2 cells. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from an HLA-A2.1-positive healthy donor were repeatedly sensitized in vitro with T2 cells pulsed with each of these two WT1 peptides, and CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) that specifically lyse WT1 peptide-pulsed T2 cells in an HLA-A2.1-restricted fashion were induced. The CTLs also exerted specific lysis against WT1-expressing, HLA-A2.1-positive leukemia cells, but not against WT1-expressing, HLA-A2.1-negative leukemia cells, or WT1-nonexpressing, HLA-A2.1-positive B-lymphoblastoid cells. These data provide the first evidence of human CTL responses specific for the WT1 peptides, and provide a rationale for developing WT1 peptide-based adoptive T-cell therapy and vaccination against leukemia and solid tumors.

Notes: Abstract The localization of DNA in the condensed interphase chromosomes of Euglena was determined by immunoelectron microscopy. Deposits of gold particles that coincided with the localization of DNA followed threads that corresponded to the chromatin fibers. The threads were 55–80 nm in diameter and were assumed to be supersolenoids. The localization of gold deposits on chromosomes that had been sectioned in various directions suggested that the chromatin fibers coiled around the surface of chromosomes, with a wide central axial region of the chromosomes remaining free of DNA. These findings are discussed in relation to current models of chromosomal structure.

Notes: Abstract. We describe the deposition and characterization of Bi12SiO20 (bismuth silicon oxide; BSO) thin films on Y-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and SiO2 glass substrates by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) for the application of an electric field sensor. It was found that all films deposited on YSZ substrates heated at 400 °C and more were crystallized and the (310) plane was perpendicular to the substrate normal. The highly (310) oriented crystallized films were even deposited on SiO2 glass substrates, and this will make it possible to grow the crystallized films on the end surface of a SiO2 glass fiber.

Notes: Abstract High-order Raman parametric generation was excited in the visible and near-IR regions on the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines of Y3Al5O12 single crystals and nanocrystalline ceramics. All generation components, as well as the χ(3)-active vibrational modes of these materials, were identified. In connection with the extensive use of the Nd3+-and Yb3+-doped Y3Al5O12 crystals and, in recent years, nanocrystalline Y3Al5O12: Nd3+ ceramics in laser physics and quantum electronics, the applied aspect of the observed nonlinear properties of these materials is outlined.

Notes: Reduced absorption coefficients have been measured for the collision-induced-dipole (CID) absorption bands associated with the 5s–4d transition of atomic strontium perturbed by He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Sr. The main CID absorption band, assigned to 5sΣ–4dΣ, extends from the position of the atomic 5s–4d transition towards the shorter-wavelength side for every perturber. For Xe and Kr, an additional small absorption band is seen at the foot of the atomic 5s–4d transition. The former 5sΣ–4dΣ band is interpreted to result from collisional mixing of the 5p state of atomic Sr into the molecular 4dΣ state for small internuclear separations, while the latter band is interpreted to result from the collisional quadrupole (strontium)–dipole (Xe or Kr) interaction.

Notes: We have observed many collision-induced-dipole (CID) absorption bands arising from the transitions between quasimolecular ground and high-lying (n≤10) states in the strontium–rare-gas systems. For each absorption band, we have measured the energy shift of the absorption peak from the energy of the correlating atomic forbidden transition and the effective oscillator strength per unit perturber density fCID/Np. The shift is roughly proportional to the electron scattering length L0 for each rare-gas atom, whereas the fCID/Np is roughly proportional to L20. The shift decreases in general as the principal quantum number n increases, and increases as one goes from the s state to the d state, and to the degenerate manifold state with l≥3. These general features of the shift and fCID/Np are consistent with the predictions by a simple Fermi-potential model, suggesting the important role of the interaction between a Rydberg electron and a rare-gas atom in the CID absorption processes.

Notes: We have determined reduced absorption coefficients on far wings of the Ba 6s2 1S0–5d6p 1P1 line broadened by He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Using the unified Franck–Condon theory, we analyzed the blue satellite band observed for each of the He, Ne, and Ar perturbers and obtained the position and the height of the extremum of the difference potential-energy curve to be 6.5±1.5 A and 251±4 cm−1 for He, 7.6±2 A and 114±2 cm−1 for Ne, and 7.4±2 A and 70±2 cm−1 for Ar. We have also observed the collision-induced–dipole absorption bands associated with the Ba 6s2 1S0–6s7s 1S0 forbidden transition for all rare-gas perturbers.

Notes: Reduced absorption coefficients γBaBa were measured for the far-wing absorption of the self-broadened Ba6s2 1S0–5d6p 1P1 line, Ba(6s2 1S0) +Ba(6s2 1S0)+(h-dash-bar)ω → Ba*(5d6p 1P1)+Ba(6s21 S0)and the pair absorption Ba(6s2 1S0)+Ba(6s2 1 S0) +(h-dash-bar)ω→Ba*(6s6p 1P1 +Ba*(6s5d 1D2). The self-broadening shows the red-shaded asymmetric profile: γBaBa on the red wing is proportional to Δν−3/2, where Δν is the detuning from the line center. The pair absorption shows a broad asymmetric peak having a blue tail and a blue satellite. The estimated γBaBa, which is based on the quasistatic line-broadening theory and the long-range dipole–dipole interaction between the relevant atomic excited levels, shows reasonable agreement for the red wing of the self-absorption whereas it gives larger values by a factor of 3 for the blue tail of the main peak for the pair absorption.
