Notes: Abstract New photoresponsive crown ethers (1H+) having a crown ring and an ammoniumalkyl (H3N+(CH2)n −, n=4,6,10) group attached to the two sides of an azobenzene have been synthesized. Photoresponsive properties (thermal isomerization, metal extraction, membrane transport, etc.) were examined, and the results were compared with those of other photoresponsive crown ethers and complexons.

Notes: Summary A male Japanese infant was found to have a chromosomal aberration of del(21)(qter→q22.1-2) and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in erythrocytes and polymorphonuclear and mononuclear leukocytes. The cuprozinc enzyme (SOD-1) level was 40–50% of normal, while the cyanide-insensitive managanese enzyme (SOD-2) activity was within the normal range. Determination of SOD activity in blood cells is a valuable method of classification of the syndrome.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Thiazolylazophenol mit einer Methyl- bzw.
Notes: Summary Thiazolylazophenols containing a methyl or a phenyl group in the thiazole ring were synthesized and their potential for the spectrophotometric determination of iron were studied. These dyes react with iron(II) to form brownish complexes, which show a characteristic absorption in near-infrared region. Among them, 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-4-methoxyphenol is most suitable and the iron(II) complex has the absorption maximum at 815 nm in chloroform. The optimum pH for iron extraction lies between 5.5–9.5 and Beer's law holds up to 6 ppm of iron, with a molar absorptivity of 1.47×104 1 mol−1 cm−1. The composition and the extraction constant of the complex was found to be Fe∶BTAMP=1∶2 and log Kex=−0.76±0.12, respectively. Many kinds of ions can be tolerated even in the presence of large amounts. The method has been applied to the determination of iron in mixtures containing 3d type metal ions, natural waters and native sulfurs with satisfactory results.

Notes: Abstract Many electrophoretic variants of hemolymph inhibitors of proteases from Aspergillus mellus and pancreatic α-chymotrypsin were found using 126 silkworm strains. Six inhibitors of the fungal protease were detected and eight of chymotryspin; the distribution of inhibitors among Japanese, Chinese, and European races was investigated. Comparison of electrophoretic patterns from F1 hybrids and parents showed that the offspring produce inhibitors of both parental types. Segregation in F2 and backcrossing suggest that the expression of each inhibitor is controlled in most cases by a pair of alleles which are responsible for strong and null bands. Two bands of fungal protease inhibitors C and D were controlled by codominant alleles. These results suggest that polymorphism of hemolymph protease inhibitors in the silkworm would be a useful experimental system for the study of the genetic control of protease inhibitors.

Notes: Summary Cells of a green alga,Pleurotaenium nodosum, were tied off with thin fibers, after which development of daughter semicells from the small tied mother semicells was examined with a light microscope. Semicells slightly shortened due to tying mostly developed normal sized daughter semicells with four nodes. However, semicells shorter than 1/2 the normal size developed small daughter semicells with fewer nodes. This was interpreted that the daughter semicells of shortened semicells had not enlarged sufficiently to allow formation of four nodes on the cell surface at the initial stage of node formation. The initiation of node formation was recognized as taking place in the contact region between the plasma membrane and the cell wall in plasmolyzed cells. The distance between two neighbouring contact regions was consistent at about 6 μm.

Notes: Summary Primary leaves of intact bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) were treated with benzyladenine (BA) at different stages of growth. Changes in the ultrastructure of chloroplasts and the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid, and protein (soluble and insoluble) in leaves with different treatments were followed and compared. When BA was applied from an early stage, it increased the chloroplast size and the number of grana per chloroplast without any pronounced effect on the grana size. When BA treatment was stopped at the early stage, these effects remained for a while and then diminished. When BA treatment was begun at a late stage, such marked effects were not observed, suggesting that only young leaves could respond to BA in that manner. However, the late treatment efficiently prevented the process of the last stage of leaf senescence characterized by disintegration of thylakoids with concomitant increase in the plastoglobule size. Chlorophyll, carotenoid, and insoluble protein contents per leaf followed similar changes in chloroplast length and the number of grana per chloroplast section.

Notes: Summary Genetic recombination in the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans was first reported by Kumar (1962) and confirmed by Bazin (1968). Although genetic transformation in this organism was demonstrated by Shestakov and Khyen (1970) and Herdman (1973), conjugation does not seem to have been reported so far. In Escherichia coli, one common mode of gene transfer involves conjugation between donor and recipient cells. This conjugation is mediated by the formation of a pilus or conjugation tube through which the chromosome of the male cell passes into the recipient (female) cell (Hayes 1962).
