Beschreibung: A significant minority of high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) candidates show extremely red broad-band colours and remain undetected in emission lines after optical ‘discovery’ spectroscopy. In this paper, we present deep GTC optical imaging and spectroscopy of one such radio galaxy, 5C 7.245, with the aim of better understanding the nature of these enigmatic objects. Our g -band image shows no significant emission coincident with the stellar emission of the host galaxy, but does reveal faint emission offset by ~3 arcsec (26 kpc) therefrom along a similar position angle to that of the radio jets, reminiscent of the ‘alignment effect’ often seen in the optically luminous HzRGs. This offset g -band source is also detected in several UV emission lines, giving it a redshift of 1.609, with emission line flux ratios inconsistent with photoionization by young stars or an AGN, but consistent with ionization by fast shocks. Based on its unusual gas geometry, we argue that in 5C 7.245 we are witnessing a rare (or rarely observed) phase in the evolution of quasar hosts when stellar mass assembly, accretion on to the back hole, and powerful feedback activity has eradicated its cold gas from the central ~20 kpc, but is still in the process of cleansing cold gas from its extended halo.

Beschreibung: In this communication, the measured behaviour of a lead-acid battery bank within a stand-alone residential solar photovoltaic (PV)-genset-battery hybrid power system in Canada is presented and discussed. In order to capture rare field-based battery performance data, a newly commissioned lead-acid battery bank was equipped with a battery monitoring device capable of logging voltage, current, temperature and amp-hours every 30 s for the life of the battery. The measured data captures a severe loss of battery capacity due to a combination of short-term deep discharge and extended partial state of charge operation—conditions not unusual during winter season PV-genset-battery hybrid power system operation. Subsequent manual override of the system control set points to encourage gradual battery overcharge are shown to recover the lead-acid battery bank’s performance over the following three months. Limitations of the power conversion system’s battery management approach are discussed and a novel closed loop control system for improving lead-acid based PV-genset-battery hybrid system performance is rationalized and proposed for further research.

Beschreibung: We present the results of a deep, wide-area variability survey in the Southern hemisphere, the first of its kind. As part of the Catalina Sky Surveys, the Siding Spring Survey (SSS) has covered 14 800 deg 2 in the declination range of –75° ≤ ≤ –15°. To mine the enormous SSS data set efficiently, we have developed two algorithms: automatic period selection (APS) and automatic Fourier decomposition (AFD), which aim to sharpen the period estimation and produce robust light-curve models. Armed with the APS and AFD outputs, we classify 10 540 ab-type RR Lyrae (RRab) stars (~90 per cent of which are new) across the southern sky. As well as the positional information we supply photometric metallicities, and unreddened distances. For the RRab stars in the halo, a study of the photometric metallicity distribution reveals a nearly Gaussian shape with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = –1.4 dex and a dispersion of 0.3 dex. A spatial study of the RRab metallicities shows no significant radial gradient in the first ~7 kpc from the Galaxy centre. However, further out, a small negative gradient is clearly present. This is complemented by a very obvious correlation of the mean RR Lyrae metallicity with distance above the Galactic plane, z . We have also carried out an initial sub-structure search using the discovered RRab, and present the properties of the candidates with significance greater than 2. Most prominent among these is a southern extension of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy's stream system, reaching down to declinations ~ -40 °.

Beschreibung: Addiction profoundly alters motivational circuits so that drugs become powerful reinforcers of behavior. The interoceptive system continuously updates homeostatic and emotional information that are important elements in motivational decisions. We tested the idea that interoceptive information is essential in drug craving and in the behavioral signs of malaise. We inactivated the primary interoceptive cortex in amphetamine-experienced rats, which prevented the urge to seek amphetamine in a place preference task. Interoceptive insula inactivation also blunted the signs of malaise induced by acute lithium administration. Drug-seeking and malaise both induced Fos expression, a marker of neuronal activation, in the insula. We conclude that the insular cortex is a key structure in the perception of bodily needs that provides direction to motivated behaviors.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Contreras, Marco -- Ceric, Francisco -- Torrealba, Fernando -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2007 Oct 26;318(5850):655-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Departamento de Fisiologia, Facultad de Ciencias Biologicas, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Santiago 6513677, Chile.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17962567" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Arabinosylcytosine, a compound that inhibits DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells, stimulates fetal hemoglobin in adult baboons and produces significant perturbations in the pools of erythroid progenitors. It appears that changes in the kinetics of erythroid cell differentiation rather than direct action on the gamma genes underlie stimulation of fetal hemoglobin in the adult animals in vivo. These results also suggest that chemotherapeutic agents selected for their low carcinogenic or mutagenic potential could be used for therapeutic induction of fetal hemoglobin in patients with sickle cell anemia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Papayannopoulou, T -- Torrealba de Ron, A -- Veith, R -- Knitter, G -- Stamatoyannopoulos, G -- GM 15253/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- HL-07093/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- HL-20899/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 May 11;224(4649):617-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6200940" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: As remote sensing (RS) applications and resources continue to expand, their importance for ecology and conservation increases – and so does the need for effective and successful training of professionals working in those fields. Methodological and applied courses often form part of university curricula, but their practical and long-term benefits only become clear afterwards. Having recently received such training in an interdisciplinary master's programme, we provide our perspectives on our shared education. Through an online survey we include experiences of students and professionals in different fields. Most participants perceive their RS education as useful for their career, but express a need for more training at university level. Hands-on projects are considered the most effective learning method. Besides methodological knowledge, soft skills are clear gains, including problem solving, self-learning and finding individual solutions, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams. The largest identified gaps in current RS training concern the application regarding policy making, methodology and conservation. To successfully prepare students for a career, study programmes need to provide RS courses based on state-of-the-art methods, including programming, and interdisciplinary projects linking research and practice supported by a sound technical background. The benefits of academic remote sensing education become clear only after graduation, when technical and soft skills are applied. Being in this situation ourselves and including an online survey, we share crucial learnings and gaps of current remote sensing training for conservation and ecology. To successfully prepare students for a career, remote sensing (RS) education needs to teach and apply state-of-the-art methods in interdisciplinary projects, especially with regard to policy making, linking research and practice and methodology and ecology, and fostering the development of soft skills.

Beschreibung: We announce the discovery of the Aquarius 2 dwarf galaxy, a new distant satellite of the Milky Way, detected on the fringes of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) ATLAS and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) surveys. The object was originally identified as an overdensity of red giant branch stars, but chosen for subsequent follow-up based on the presence of a strong blue horizontal branch, which was also used to measure its distance of ~110 kpc. Using deeper imaging from the Inamori-Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph camera on the 6.5m Baade and spectroscopy with DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on Keck, we measured the satellite's half-light radius 5.1 ± 0.8 arcmin, or ~160 pc at this distance, and its stellar velocity dispersion of $5.4^{+3.4}_{-0.9}$ km s –1 . With μ = 30.2 mag arcsec –2 and M V  = –4.36, the new satellite lies close to two important detection limits: one in surface brightness; and one in luminosity at a given distance, thereby making Aquarius 2 one of the hardest dwarfs to find.
