    Description: The autonomous optical navigation system technology for the Deep Space 1 (DS1) mission is reported on. The DS1 navigation system will be the first to use autonomous navigation in deep space. The systems tasks are to: perform interplanetary cruise orbit determination using images of distant asteroids; control and maintain the orbit of the spacecraft with an ion propulsion system and conventional thrusters, and perform late knowledge updates of target position during close flybys in order to facilitate high quality data return from asteroid MaAuliffe and comet West-Kohoutek-Ikemura. To accomplish these tasks, the following functions are required: picture planning; image processing; dynamical modeling and integration; planetary ephemeris and star catalog handling; orbit determination; data filtering and estimation; maneuver estimation, and spacecraft ephemeris updating. These systems and functions are described and preliminary performance data are presented.

    Description: Orbital elements are presented for the six small satellites of Neptune, 1989N1 through 1989N6, discovered by Voyager 2. Details of the image and orbit analyses are examined. The solution for the orbits of the six satellites is presented in terms of geometric classical Keplerian elements. All six are in nearly circular direct orbits; most of the satellites have low inclinations, except the innermost, 1989N6, which is inclined at 4.7 deg to Neptune's equator.

    Description: This article presents the results of a fit of a model of the Martian satellite orbits to earthbased and spacecraft-based observations. An assessment of the orbit accuracies is given and the orbits are compared with those obtained by previous investigators.

    Description: Voyager-1 and 2 long exposure images were studied in a search for previously undiscovered satellites in the Saturn system. The technique used was to overlap the images with common view areas, thereby including increasingly higher-resolution images of nearby exposures with those taken at greater distances during approach. No definite identifications were made of new satellites. However, five objects were apparently detected by the survey and the orbits associated with each of the recorded photographic 'streaks' were calculated. Techniques are discussed for applying the Space Telescope to confirm or disprove the satellite status of the observed objects.

    Description: Orbital elements are presented for the ten small satellites discovered by Voyager 2 at Uranus. These ten new satellites, whose provisional IAU designations are 1985UI and 1986UI through 1986U9, lie for the most part in equatorial, circular orbits; the most notable exception is 1986U8, the outer epsilon-ring shepherd, whose eccentricity e = 0.0101. Unlike the Voyager discoveries at Saturn, which included two co-orbiting satellites and three librators, the ten small Uranian satellites all have quite different semimajor axes.

    Description: An attempt is made to provide a constraint on the combined mass of Janus and Epimetheus from an analysis of Voyager I and Voyager 2 data and ground-based observations obtained during the 1966 and 1980 ring plane crossings. The results of the analysis presented here suggest that the total mass is 2.59 + or - 0.26 x 10 to the 21st g, the mass ratio is 3.61 + or - 0.01, and Janus' density is 0.67 + or - 0.10 g/cu cm. The low density of Janus is attributed to its porosity rather than composition.

    Description: Data sets from the Voyager and Pioneer flybys of Jupiter and the Galilean satellites are employed to characterize the Jovian magnetic field and the effects of the Io torus on transmissions. Both optical and Doppler radio data are considered, except for periods when the Jovian radiation environment disturbed the oscillator stability of the radio transmitters. Account is taken of small accelerations of the spacecraft by tidal forces of a single rising satellite, density differences in the Great Red Spot producing a columnar gravitational change, and three unknown objects in the inner Jovian system. Correction parameters are developed for the effects on the S-band data induced by the Jovian plasmasphere inwards from the Io torus. Calculations are then made of the planet and satellite masses, gravity harmonic coefficients, and orientation of the rotational pole. Large reductions in the uncertainties in previous mass estimates are obtained.

    Description: To investigate the large scale topography of the Jovian satellite Io, both limb observations and stereographic techniques applied to landmarks are used. The raw data for this study consists of Voyager 1 images of Io, 800x800 arrays of picture elements each of which can take on 256 possible brightness values. In analyzing this data it was necessary to identify and locate landmarks and limb points on the raw images, remove the image distortions caused by the camera electronics and translate the corrected locations into positions relative to a reference geoid. Minimizing the uncertainty in the corrected locations is crucial to the success of this project. In the highest resolution frames, an error of a tenth of a pixel in image space location can lead to a 300 m error in true location. In the lowest resolution frames, the same error can lead to an uncertainty of several km.

    Description: During detailed analysis of Voyager 2 pictures of the Jupiter ring, a starlike object was identified in the plane of the ring. The same object was subsequently found on a higher-resolution frame and proved to be a satellite of Jupiter. This satellite has a circular orbit whose radius is 1.8 Jupiter radii, a period of 7 hours and 8 minutes, and a diameter of less than 40 kilometers. It is located at the outer edge of the Jupiter ring.

    Description: A study was carried out to determine the feasibility, with current technology, of performing aperture synthesis using two telescopes orbiting the earth in coordinated orbits separated by approximately 10 m to 1 km. The objective was to determine whether there is a practical alternative to a very large, deployed, servo-controlled submillimeter telescope (i.e., the Large Deployable Reflector) for obtaining high-resolution submillimeter images of astronomical sources. It is found that suitable classes of orbits exist which can provide good UV coverage over the entire sky and the real-time correlation of wideband signals can be performed in orbit using current technology. The most difficult task appears to be the real-time determination of the orientation of the baseline vector in a stable coordinate system. A plausible scheme has been identified for the determination of an arbitrary direction to within 0.003 arcsec in an astrometric coordinate system. This scheme not only makes submillimeter interferometric image reconstruction possible but should also have numerous other applications.
