Notes: Summary The pH and temperature for the optimum activity of trypsin from the midgut ofSarcophaga ruficornis andMusca domestica was 7.5 and 8.0 respectively and 50°C. The enzymic activity increased with the increase in incubation period and enzyme concentration.

Notes: Summary 5 pairs of median and 1 pair of lateral neurosecretory cell groups occur in the protocerebrum of maleDysdercus koenigii, a hemipteran pest on Hibiscus esculentus. The lateral neurosecretory cells (LNSC) are in a state of peak activity when the male engages itself in copulation. 24 h later, the LNSC are found to be inactive, but they again resume their activity 96 h after commencement of copulation. Such males soon start mating if they find another receptive female. It is believed that the secretion of LNSC in maleDysdercus koenigii is responsible for the onset of the urge for mating just as in female insects.

Notes: [Auszug] THE presence of heavy ionization tracks has often been observed in Wilson chamber photographs; those due to the omission of α-particles from radioactive impurities can be easily eliminated. The rest are due to nuclear disintegrations produced by cosmic rays. Usually they emerge from lead plates ...

Notes: Abstract  Here, we present two new neuron model architectures and one modified form of existing standard feedforward architecture (MSTD). Both the new models use self-scaling scaled conjugate gradient algorithm (SSCGA) and lambda–gamma (L–G) algorithm and entail the properties of basic as well as higher order neurons (i.e., multiplication and the aggregation functions). Of these two, compensatory neural network architecture (CNNA) requires relatively smaller number of inter-neuronal connections, cuts down on the computational budget by almost 50% and speeds up convergence, besides, gives better training and prediction accuracy. The second model sigma–pi–sigma (SPS) ensures faster convergence, better training and prediction accuracy. The third model (MSTD) performs much better than the standard feedforward architecture (STD). The effect of normalizing the outputs for training also studied here shows virtually no improvement, at low iteration level, say ∼500, with increasing range of scaling. Increasing the number of neurons beyond a point also shows to have little effect in the case of higher order neuron. The numerous simulation runs for the problem of satellite orbit determination and the complex XOR problems establishes the robustness of the proposed neuron models architectures.

Notes: Summary For screening better types among 10 strains with the help of the D 2 statistic, an experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications. 10 plants in each plot were randomly selected and observations were recorded on final plant height, heading duration, effective tillers, number of grains per panicle, yield per plant and 100 grain weight. The observations were analyzed and found to be significant at 1% level. In the study of distance relations the contribution of grain number per panicle to D 2 values was found to be maximum. Again, this technique also helped in grouping the 10 strains into four clusters, viz. A, B, C and D, of which B possessed six strains out of 10; A possessed two and C and D one each. Group A comprised 2 selections from the same cross. Group D was composed of a selection from a cross involving Dular and Taichung Native-1 as parents. Group B possessed Dular, two selections from a cross involving Dular as one of the parents, Dharial and N.C.-1626. The constituents of A are expected to be transgressive segregates. Group A was maximally distantly related with D followed in order by C and B. The distance between B and C was small. Group D was found to be the best of all strains studied, followed by B, C and A.

Notes: Abstract Mineralogical studies on five plastic fire clays of India have been carried out by DTA, TG and electron microscopy. Studies were done on both ‘as received’ and ‘〈1 μ fraction’ of clays. Results indicated that all the clays were predominantly kaolinite in nature and showed the main endothermic peak between 540° and 590°C and the exothermic peak between 920° and 985°C. A large exothermic peak at 810°C and a weight loss of 5.35% between 700° and 900°C in case of Barachatarma clay indicated the presence of graphitic carbon in the same. Both Neyveli and Badampahar clays contained illite and goethite. Electron micrographs of Mohuamilan and Neyveli clays showed hexagonal flakes of well-ordered kaolinite. Some tubular particles were seen in Chittorpur, Neyveli and Badampahar clays in addition to the kaolinite particles.
