Notes: Abstract We present a method for the computation of temperature distribution in samples with a stratified structure provided the layers are perpendicular to the axis of a cylindrical photoacoustic cell and the interfaces of layers are motionless. We have modified the so-called matrix method which is frequently used in geophysics for computations of wave fields in stratified media. This method enables us to express explicitly the temperature distribution in the form of multiplication and addition of matrices which are made of constants characterizing physical properties of the medium. We have demonstrated numerically the utilization of this matrix method on two simple examples: the absorption saturation of one layer with a variable coefficient of absorption and the interference of two heat waves from different layers.

Notes: Summary An analogy of the Hellinger-Reissner functional for the Stokes problem is constructed and the way of determining its minimum by means of spherical harmonic vectors and tensors is described. The variational method is applied to a Newtonian mantle in which the body forces were estimated on the basis of global inversion of gravitational and topographic data. The method is then generalized to the case of a realistic rheology (power-law creep), and prospects of the generalised method are briefly discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper deals with some problems connected with the evaluation of the temperature gradient topocorrections for the purposes of the Earth's heat flow measurements. Some errors, occurring in the routine use of the method, suggested by Jeffreys and Bullard (JB method), are discussed. An example of simple topographic features is used to compare this method with the results obtained by a numerical solution of the heat conduction equation (NS method) by means of the finite difference method. The calculations have shown that the NS method is more precise, but its results are very sensitive to the approximation of the surface used. A stepwise approximation of the surface used in a 3-D model of a real mountainous region causes artificial oscillations of the surface values of the topocorrections, and the accuracy of the obtained results is comparable with that of the JB method. Thus, we are faced with the problem of a more appropriate approximation of the relief without the mentioned negative consequences to the superficial values of the topocorrections.

Notes: Summary Descriptions of the processes of crystallization and cooling of a planar intrusion body and its environs are compared by applying the frequently used Jaeger-Carslaw, adjusted Feoktistov-Feoktistova nad modified Lovering methods. These comparisons indicate that the mathematical complications of the Feoktistov-Feoktistova method are outweighted by its better accuracy as well as by the fact that the process of computation is the same for any time and any ratio of thermal properties of lava and neighbouring rocks. The comparisons imply that for dimensionless time, τ≳0.7, the modified Lovering method can be practically used also in the close surroundings of the contact.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The effect of an irregular contact of two different rock types on the surface heat flow was analysed for the Zlatý Kopec region in northwest Bohemia. The 2-D geothermal model of subsurface structures was compiled according to measured values of the thermal conductivity and heat sources and by using isobaths map of the metamorphite-granite boundary. The heat flow was computed numerically from the temperature distribution obtained as a finite-difference solution of the heat conduction equation. It was found that the heat flow variation, corresponding to the most probable model, amounts approximately to the half of the actually observed changes. The surface heat flow is affected strongly by the thermal conductivity contrast between the overlying metamorphites and underlying granites and, on the contrary, it is little sensitive to the heat production difference between both rock types. It seems, therefore, that, despite the big heat production contrast observed, the main source of the heat flow variability are thermal conductivity inhomogeneities.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Mass heterogeneities in the Earth's mantle are derived from the spherical expansions of the core-mantle boundary topography, the surface topography and the external gravity field. The obtained density distribution provides the body forces driving the convection in the mantle. Assuming Newtonian rheology, the convection is modelled by solving the Stokes problem in the region extending from the top of the D"-layer to the base of the lithosphere. The derived model of mantle motions favours the concept of whole-mantle convection; its pattern connects the shape of the core-mantle boundary with surface tectonics.
