    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Precipitating electrons Ee〉10 keV and Ee〉30 keV and protons Ep=150 to 300 keV are analyzed using data obtained from the low-altitude polar-orbiting satellite Interkozmos-17 after the magnetic storm of December 2, 1977. On December 3, an isolated substrom occurred, and strong electron precipitation was observed in the midnigt sector, while the sequence of substorms of December 5 expanded its longitudinal extent from 22 MLT through the morning to 12 MLT. The different character of the precipitation, in the two cases mentioned, is discussed in relation to the changes of conditions for the generation of cyclotron instability as well as to the effect of particle injection. Proton precipitation occurred only in the night sector, most probably just inside the plasmapause.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The monthly means of the geomagnetic index aa and of the relative sunspot numbers were used to analyse the quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO) in geomagnetic activity related to an analogous variation in solar activity. Statistical methods of time series analysis were applied: autocorrelation and power spectrum, cross-correlation, complex demodulation, and the digital filter technique. The aim of this investigation was not only the detection of QBO in geomagnetic activity, which has been done by various authors, but also the determination of the time variation of the period, phase and amplitude of these oscillations in the given time interval with reference to the results of Apostolov [2] and Apostolov and Letfus [4]. The following main results have been obtained: The characteristic period of QBO in geomagnetic activity is shorter and varies in a narrower interval than that in sunspot activity; the lifetime of the oscillations is about 22 years and roughly coincides with Hale's cycle; the amplitude of QBO in geomagnetic activity has its maximum on the decreasing branch of the sunspot cycle; the QBO in geomagnetic activity follows the analogous variation in sunspot activity with a delay of 2 to 6 months for various solar cycles, as compared with the 3 to 22 moths for the raw, unfiltered data. The causes of the differences in the characteristics of QBO in geomagnetic and sunspot activity are considered and it is shown that these differences do not contradict the solar control of this phenomenon.

    Notes: Abstract All existing data (∼6 years) on gravity wave activity, inferred from the nighttime A3 (oblique incidence on the ionosphere) radio wave absorption measurements in the lower ionosphere on 270 kHz at Průhonice in Central Europe, have been exploited to get information on the effects of QBO phases and the Mt. Pinatubo volcanic eruption on the gravity wave activity in the winter half of the year. There appears to be an enhancement of gravity wave activity in the two winters just after the strong volcanic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. This enhancement is remarkable for long-period waves (T=2–3 hours). No clear effect of the phase of QBO on the level of gravity wave activity has been found; a possible effect of QBO on the correlations between gravity wave activities in individual period bands is indicated. The results are limited by a relatively short data series; however, no more data will he available.

    Notes: Abstract The low frequency (LF) nighttime radio-wave absorption in the lower ionosphere has been measured at Průhonice (50°N, 15°E) in central Europe for over 35 years. Digital measurements, performed since summer 1988, allow absorption oscillations in the period range 10 – 180 mins, which are believed to reflect gravity wave activity, to be derived. Unfortunately, problems with the transmitter in recent years terminated the evaluation of gravity wave activity. The analysis of the available information (∼6 years of data) allows two conclusions to be drawn as to the effects of the solar activity on gravity wave activity: (1) there is no detectable effect of the solar ∼27-day variation on gravity wave activity; (2) there is an indication that the positive effect of the 11-year solar cycle on gravity wave activity in the winter half of the year is remarkable (lack of data in summer). The result concerning the solar cycle effect is, to a certain extent, preliminary, because the available data do not cover a complete solar cycle. A comparison with results from other stations and an interpretation of results are presented.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary By investigating the quasi-regular variations in ionospheric absorption along three distant radio paths with approximately one and the same equivalent frequency during the winters 1983/84 and 1984/85, an attempt is made to study the stratospheric-mesospheric relations at typical geographic mid latitudes. It is shown that the quasi-regular oscillations of ionospheric absorption, investigated in this paper, reach maximum development in each time series at one and the same time. This means, that if they are provoked by an external source when it starts acting, a spectrum of frequencies is generated rather than a definite fixed frequency. By studying the variation of the instantaneous amplitudes of the quasi-regular oscillations in ionospheric absorption with time, their connection with the amplification of the quasi-stationary planetary waves in the stratosphere with a zonal wave number 2 during the winter periods under investigation is shown.

    Description: Results of systematic analysis of propagation directions and horizontal velocities of Gravity Waves (GWs) and spread F structures in low-latitude ionosphere (magnetic inclination ~27° ) in Tucuman region, Argentina, are presented. Measurements were carried out by multi-point continuous Doppler system during one year from December 2012 to November 2013. It was found that meridian propagation of GWs dominated, and that southward propagation prevailed in the local summer. Oblique spread structures observed in Doppler shift spectrograms and associated with spread F propagated roughly eastward at velocities from ~70 to ~180 m/s and were observed at night from ~ September to ~ March. The velocities were computed for 182 events, and the azimuths for 64 events. Continuous Doppler sounding makes it possible to analyze more events compared to optical observations often used for propagation studies since the measurements do not depend on weather.
