    Notes: Many sensors have been applied to the problem of measuring neutral atomic oxygen fluxes in low Earth orbit. The techniques used to date tend to suffer from several key disadvantages, variously: large mass and power budgets, large size, high cost, the ability to make only one measurement and poor time resolution. In this article preliminary results from ground-based testing of a novel atomic oxygen sensor based on a semiconducting metal oxide are reported. Such sensors are simple and relatively cheap while also requiring small power and mass budgets and, most importantly, are reusable. The sensors have been used in laboratory experiments to investigate the axial variation of atomic oxygen flux in a pulsed laser atomic oxygen source; the results compare well with readings taken with a carbon-coated quartz crystal microbalance. A small instrument based on these sensors has been designed and built for application on the UK's STRV-1c microsatellite. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have constructed a vertical-cavity, surface-emitting laser with a voltage-controlled quantum well absorber in the upper mirror stack. If the lasing wavelength of this device is designed to be slightly longer than the absorber band edge, sharp negative differential resistance can be obtained in the absorber under lasing conditions. We present strong experimental evidence that this behavior arises from redshifting of the absorption excitonic peak due to the quantum confined Stark effect. Design criteria are proposed for applications including high speed modulation and self-pulsation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Requirements for the activation of Cl conductance have been investigated in pig jejunal brush border vesicles. The stability of ATP as a substrate for protein kinase activity, the stability of the phosphoprotein product of protein kinase action, and the choice of buffer system used for vesicle preparation were studied as variables which affected the outcome of in vitro activation attempts. Arsenate was selected as the most effective agent in protecting ATP from hydrolysis by the phosphatase activity in this vesicle system. Brush border vesicle protein appeared to prevent the accumulation of phosphoprotein in a cAMP-dependent protein kinase reaction, and vesicle protein only had phosphate acceptor activity when KF was added as a presumptive inhibitor of phosphoprotein phosphatase. A Cl conductance response to a potassium gradient and valinomycin was present in vesicles prepared in buffers containing tetramethylammonium. Cl− conductance activity was not increased in this system by the addition of ATP, dibutyryl cyclic AMP, and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase. There was no Cl conductance response to a potassium gradient in vesicles buffered with imidazolium-acetate. Incorporation of ATP, AsO 4 3− , and F− into these nonconductive vesicles by homogenization, followed by addition of dibutyryl cAMP, produced substantial conductance activity. Maximal activation of Cl− conductance was obtained with vesicles prepared in imidazolium-acetate buffering, using precautions to stabilize ATP and phosphoprotein prior to conductance measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Analyses of the time-integrated fluxes of solar energetic particle events during the period 1965–1990 show that the differential distribution of events with flux F is given by a power law, with indices between 1.2 and 1.4 depending on energy. The power law represents a good fit over three to four orders of magnitude in fluence. Similar power-law distributions have been found for peak proton and electron fluxes, X-ray flares and radio and type III bursts. At fluences greater than 109 cm−2, the slope of the distribution steepens and beyond 1010 cm−2 the power-law index is estimated to be 3.5. At energies greater than 10 MeV, the slope of the distribution was found to be essentially independent of solar cycle, when the active years of solar cycles 20, 21, and 22 were analysed. The results presented are the first for a complete period of 27 years, covering nearly 3 complete solar cycles. Other new aspects of the results include the invariance of the exponent with solar cycle and also with integral energy.

    Notes: Abstract Power spectral analyses of the time series of solar proton events during the past three solar cycles reveal a periodicity around 154 days. This feature is prominent in all of the cycles combined, cycles 19 and 21 individually but is only weak in cycle 20. These results are consistent with the presence of similar periodicities between 152 and 155 days in the occurrence rate of major solar flares, the sunspot blocking function (P s ), the 10.7 cm radio flux (F 10.7) and the sunspot number (R z ). This suggests that the circa 154-days periodicity may be a fundamental characteristic of the Sun. Periods around 50–52 days are also found in the combined data set and in the three individual cycles in general agreement with the detection of this periodicity in major flares in cycle 19 and inP s ,F 10.7, andR z in cycle 21. The cause of the 155 day period remains unknown. The spectra contain lines (or show power at frequencies) consistent with a model in which the periodicity is caused by differential rotation of active zones and a model in which it is related to beat frequencies between solar oscillations, as proposed by Wolff.

    Notes: Abstract NE/SQP (Refs. 2–3) is a recent algorithm that has proven quite effective for solving the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP). NE/SQP is robust in the sense that its direction-finding subproblems are always solvable; in addition, the convergence rate of this method is q-quadratic. In this note, we consider a generalized version of NE/SQP, as first described in Ref. 4, which is suitable for the bounded NCP. We extend the work in Ref. 4 by demonstrating a stronger convergence result and present numerical results on test problems.
