    Publication Date: 2024-02-17
Description: The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis activity by the international marine carbon research community (〉100 contributors). SOCAT version 5 has 21.5 million quality-controlled, surface ocean fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) observations from 1957 to 2017 for the global oceans and coastal seas. Calibrated sensor data are also available. Automation allows annual, public releases. SOCAT data is discoverable, accessible and citable. SOCAT enables quantification of the ocean carbon sink and ocean acidification and evaluation of ocean biogeochemical models. SOCAT, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2017, represents a milestone in biogeochemical and climate research and in informing policy.

Description: Upper-ocean velocities along the cruise track of Maria S. Merian cruise MSM106 were continuously collected by a vessel-mounted Teledyne RD Instruments 75 kHz Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in three different configurations: 1) broadband mode with 4 m bins and a blanking distance of 2.0 m, with a total of 128 bins, 2) broadband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 4.0 m, with a total of 100 bins, 3) narrowband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 4.0 m, with a total of 100 bins. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's gyro platforms and the navigation data were used by the data acquisition software VmDas internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (configuration 1: 0.65° +/- 0.5915°, configuration 2: 0.78° +/- 0.5198°, configuration 3: 0.67° +/- 0.6996°) and scale factor (configuration1: 1.0075 +/- 0.0117, configuration 2: 1.0075 +/- 0.0087, configuration 3: 1.0007 +/- 0.0157) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The average interval was set to 60 s.

Description: Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems. Usually, the systems are changed after 6 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 6.5 m depth, salinity is estimated within the interior measurement container from conductivity and interior temperature. Temperature and salinity were calibrated against CTD values from 7m depth. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

In:  Supplement to: Fiedler, Björn; Fietzek, Peer; Vieira, Nuno; Silva, Pericles; Bittig, Henry; Körtzinger, Arne (2013): In Situ CO2 and O2 Measurements on a Profiling Float. Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 30(1), 112-126, https://doi.org/10.1175/JTECH-D-12-00043.1
    Publication Date: 2024-02-01
Description: In recent years, profiling floats, which form the basis of the successful international Argo observatory, are also being considered as platforms for marine biogeochemical research. This study showcases the utility of floats as a novel tool for combined gas measurements of CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and O2. These float prototypes were equipped with a small-sized and submersible pCO2 sensor and an optode O2 sensor for highresolution measurements in the surface ocean layer. Four consecutive deployments were carried out during November 2010 and June 2011 near the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory (CVOO) in the eastern tropical North Atlantic. The profiling float performed upcasts every 31 h while measuring pCO2, O2, salinity, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure in the upper 200 m of the water column. To maintain accuracy, regular pCO2 sensor zeroings at depth and surface, as well as optode measurements in air, were performed for each profile. Through the application of data processing procedures (e.g., time-lag correction), accuracies of floatborne pCO2 measurements were greatly improved (10-15 µatm for the water column and 5 µatm for surface measurements). O2 measurements yielded an accuracy of 2 µmol/kg. First results of this pilot study show the possibility of using profiling floats as a platform for detailed and unattended observations of the marine carbon and oxygen cycle dynamics.
