Notes: Abstract A producer-independent, problem-oriented, group-education programme with 2-day meetings on drug treatment in primary health care (PHC) was developed and evaluated. Initially, it was tested on a selected group of general practitioners (district physicians), using a non-exposed group as control. A comprehensive questionnaire was used to test changes in attitudes. There was a significant change in attitudes concerning both general opinions on drugs and drug use, on information about drug treatment, and on use of drugs in selected therapeutic areas. Also, the district physicians became more critical towards information from pharmaceutical companies. Prescribing patterns tended to change in accordance with the attitude changes. Subsequently, the programme was offered to all district physicians (about 550) in the southern Swedish health care region for a 10-year period, with 20–25 district physicians per 2-day meeting. The impact of the programme on the prescribing of a selected group of drugs (antibiotics) was assessed by voluntary registration of prescription by the participants, by regional prescription analyses and by analyses of drug sales data. There were significant, consistent, and sustained changes in the prescribing of antibiotics. The study supports the view that, if drug prescribing in general practice is to be improved, producer-independent, problem-oriented, face-to-face, small-group education on drug treatment is worthwhile.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of estramustine phosphate (EMP) was studied in five prostatic cancer patients given single i.v. and oral doses of EMP in a cross-over study. Plasma and urinary concentrations of parent drug, estramustine, estromustine (the estrone analogue), estradiol and estrone were followed for 32 h. The elimination of intravenous EMP from plasma was biphasic. The mean volumes of distribution were small, being 43 and 108 ml/kg for the central and peripheral compartments, respectively. The plasma clearance was 64 ml/kg/h, and the half-lives of the two phases were 0.16 and 1.27 h. Metabolism was the major route of elimination of EMP. It was readily dephosphorylated and oxidized to yield the cytotoxic metabolites estramustine and estromustine. Estromustine was the main metabolite in plasma. When given orally EMP underwent extensive presystemic dephosphorylation, which started in the gastrointestinal tract. The relative bioavailability of estromustine after administration of EMP-capsules was 44%, which reflects incomplete absorption of EMP rather than first-pass metabolism of estromustine. The terminal half-life of estromustine was 10–20 h, which suggests that EMP might be given once or twice a day.

Notes: Growth of thick epitaxial SiC layers needed for high power devices is presented forhorizontal hot-wall CVD (HWCVD) reactors. We demonstrate thickness of epilayer of 100 μm andmore with good morphology, low-doping with no doping variation through the whole thick layerand reasonable carrier lifetime which mainly depends on the substrate quality. Typical epidefectsare described and their density can dramatically be reduced when choosing correctly the growthconditions as well as the polishing of the surface prior to the growth. The control of the doping andthickness uniformities as well as the run-to-run reproducibility is also presented. Variouscharacterization techniques such as optical microscopy, AFM, reflectance, CV, PL and minoritycarrier lifetime have been used. Results of high-voltage SiC Schottky power devices are presented

Notes: We report observations of coherent elastic and rotationally inelastic scattering of N2, O2, and CH4 from a 10 K Cu(111) surface, kept clean by pulsed laser heating. The related sharp features in the measured angular distributions decrease drastically in intensity at elevated target temperatures. At low temperature rotational transitions reduce the elastic scattering probability by about an order of magnitude. This effect is weak for D2 at the impact conditions of concern. Quantum scattering calculations for N2 and D2 show that this difference is primarily caused by the large difference in rotational constants and the associated rotational transition energies of these molecules. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure types of Rh7Mg44 and Mg6Pd are described by means of packing octahedra and tetrahedra. The host structure common to the two types is a cubic intergrowth of two different building units. One unit has the Mg atoms arranged as the anions in Keggin's ion (PW120403-), and the other is an octahedrally capped block of the pyrochlore structure.

Notes: A structural model for a quasicrystalline material of approximate composition Al65Cu20Fe15 is presented. The validity of the model was tested by comparing the optical diffraction of projections of the model with experimental electron diffraction patterns of crystal fragments.

Notes: Some crystallographic packings of identical infinite cylinders are described. It is shown how certain crystal structures are related to these packings when the cylinders are replaced by rods of atoms or groups of atoms (coordination polyhedra). Emphasis is placed on the densest cubic rod packing and structures based on this principle, which include garnet, Th3P4, β-Mn, Ag4RbI5 and bixbyite.
