Notizen: A series of mono- and dimetallic complexes of rack type containing a dinucleating bis-tridentate ligand and RuII-2,2′:6′,2′-terpyridyl (tpy) sites were synthesised and characterised. The 1H NMR spectra of the dimetallic complexes were correlated to structural features, and the crystal structures of the dimetallic complexes were determined. They provide information about the way in which the central substitutent affects the overall shape of the racks and the relative disposition of the metal centres, measured by the pinching angle of the bis-tridentate ligand and the convergence angle of the ancillary tpy units. The latter demonstrates that a CH3 group yields the least bent complex and indicates how parallel the tpy units are. The dimetallic racks exhibit metal-metal interactions mediated by the bis-tridentate ligands as indicated by electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. The bridging-ligand π* orbital and the dπ metal orbital are stabilised by complexation of a second metal. The results obtained provide guidelines for the design of extended racks bearing several metal centres in a linear arrangement, which also represent potential components of molecular electronic devices.

Notizen: The self-assembly of the pentanuclear double helicates Hh, Ha and He from the corresponding oligobipyridine strands Lh, La and Le and Cu1 ions has been investigated by NMR and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS). Where as Hh is assembled rapidly (in less than 20 min), He (about 20 h) and especially Ha (about 60 h) form much more slowly. The rate decreases strongly with increasing steric bulk of the substituents in the 4,4′-positions on the bipyridine units; this indicates that the search processes (wrapping, unwrapping) that lead to the final helicate are strongly hindered by the size of the substituents. The ESMS data give information about the species present in solution under different conditions and allow the formulation of possible formation pathways, which may involve, in particular, helicates of hairpin type.

Notizen: Organic photochromic systems represent a starting point for the elaboration of light-triggered molecular switching devices. The novel bispyridinium and bispyridine compounds 12+ and 6 were synthesized as their uncyclized isomers from 3,5-dibromo-2-methylthiophene in overall yields of 43 and 44%, respectively. The diarylethene photochromes 2 and 10-13, substituted with electron donors and acceptors, were prepared from 5-methylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde in 21-32% overall yield. All of the compounds were found to exhibit pronounced photochromic properties. Irradiation with UV light resulted in essentially complete photocyclization of the open forms to the intensely coloured closed isomers which could, in turn, be reconverted back to the open state with visible light of γ〉600 nm. The absorption maxima of the described compounds in their closed forms are shifted far towards, and even into, the near-IR region. Whereas no thermochromic properties were observed for the open isomers, the rates of thermal decolouration of the cyclized forms was found to be highly dependent on the nature of the substituents on the thiophene rings. It was demonstrated that reversible photochemical interconversion between the two photochromic states could be used to effectively switch a number of physical properties. Thus, the molecules 12+ and 12 represent two kinds of redox switches, the former in reduction and the latter in oxidation, in which electron conduction is switched on in the closed state and off in the open state. Compound 12 may also be considered to be a photoswitchable analogue of tetrathiafulvalene type substances. On the other hand, compound 2 displays a marked increase in nonlinear optical activity on conversion from the open to the closed form. Such systems are prototypes of photoswitchable molecular wires where electron conduction and push-pull interaction can be reversibly modulated by an external stimulus, namely, irradiation by light.

Notizen: The bisphenolic dithienylethene molecules 1a and 1b were synthesized in overall yields of 45% from 4-bromoanisole and 44% from 2.6-di-tert-butyl-4-iodophenol, respectively. The corresponding extended quinones 3a and 3b were also prepared. Photochemical studies showed that compounds 1 are photochromic; the open forms 1 could be converted with UV light of 312nm to the closed coloured forms 2 with photostationary states lying at essentially complete conversion (〉 98%). The 1a-2a system was found to exhibit good resistance to photofatigue and thermal stability for both photoisomers. Cyclic voltammetry studies involving the 2/3 couples showed that whereas 2b undergoes irreversible oxidation at + 0.85 V (vs. SCE in THF), the hydroquinone 2a is reversibly oxidized at an E1/2 of + 0.72V (in MeCN, quasi-reversibly in THF at + 0.81 V); this reflects the differences in deprotonation behaviour of the generated QH2/2+ species. The large difference in oxidation potential between 1a and 2a allows the photochemical switching of redox properties. In a complementary fashion, redox switching of the photochromic properties within the 2a-3a pair is possible since 3a is stable to visible light. Owing to this unique behaviour, the triad consisting of 1-3a represents a novel molecular device with mutually regulating photo- and electrochromic behaviour. In addition, the ability to interconvert between the three stable states makes the system well-suited as the basis for an optical memory system with multiple storage and nondestructive readout capacity through a write-lock-read-unlock-erase cycle.

Notizen: Two efficient methods are described for the selective modification of all six primary hydroxyl groups of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD, 11). One, using an indirect strategy, involves protection of all 18 hydroxyl functions as benzoate esters, followed by selective deprotection of the six primary alcohol groups. The other, using a direct strategy, involves selective activation of the primary hydroxyl groups via a bulky triphenylphosphonium salt, which is then substituted by azide anion as the reaction proceeds. A number of modified α-cyclodextrin derivatives have been prepared and fully characterized, among which are: the useful intermediate α-cyclodextrin-dodeca (2, 3) benzoate (3); hexakis (6-amino-6-deoxy)-α-cyclodextrin hexahydrochloride (7); hexakis (6-amino-6-deoxy)-dodeca (2, 3)-O-methyl-α-cyclodextrin hexahydrochloride (9), hexa (6)-O-methyl-α-cyclodextrin (13). The direct substitution is shown to be even more efficient for β-cyclodextrin (16), giving the heptakis (6-azido-6-deoxy)-β-CD-tetradeca (2, 3)acetate (17), while the indirect strategy fails. The compounds are characterized by extensive use of 13C- and 1H-NMR. spectroscopy. The steric and statistical problems of selective polysubstitution reactions for the cyclodextrins are discussed, and possible reasons for the observed differences in reactivity between α- and β-cyclodextrins are examined. The dodecabenzoate 3 presents a very marked solvent effect on physical properties (IR. and NMR. spectra, optical rotation); the effects observed may be ascribed to an unusually strong intramolecular network of hydrogen bonds which severely distorts the α-cyclodextrin ring and lowers the symmetry from six-fold to three-fold.

Notizen: The optically active macrotricyclic cryptands 1 and 2, containing the binaphthyl group as chiral unit, have been synthesized. These compounds contain lateral cavities which may serve as anchoring sites for polar groups of the substrates and a central, chiral cavity large enough for including more or les completely the bulk of a molecular ion. Their complexation properties towards molecular ions give evidence for the occurrence of two types of processes: (a) direct complexation of primary ammonium cations, like phenylethyl ammonium chloride, occurs with either 1 or 2; (b) cascade binding, involving first complexation of an alkali cation followed by pairing with a molecular anion, takes place with 2. Process (b) may be considered as a metallo-receptor model system where binding of an anionic substrate is dependent on initial binding of a cation. In both cases (a) and (b) weak resolution of chiral racemic substrates has been observed by extraction and transport (through a bulk liquid membrane) experiments. This indicates that in the complex the bulk of the substrate should be located close to the chiral unit and therefore more or less in the central cavity. In the case of cryptand 2, the resolution achieved for the (±)-mandelate anion is markedly affected by the nature of the complexed cation.

Notizen: The crystal and molecular structure of the complex formed by the ionized bistartro-[18]-crown-6 receptor molecule 1 with the ethylenediammonium cation, is described. The macrocycle is roughly planar, the carboxy groups of each tartaric acid residue being in a diaxial relationship and extending above and below this plane. This conformation allows ‘lateral’ interactions with bound species to occur. The substrate is sandwiched between two macrocycles, with one of its NH3+ heads anchored to the polyether core, and the other one in contact with the two carboxy groups of the neighboring molecule.

Notizen: A chiral macrocyclic crown ether exhibits an enantiomer-selectivity of 2.6 for α-phenylethylammonium ion when incorporated in solvent polymeric membranes. The sequence of selectivity of these membranes clearly differs from that of lipophilicity for the different biogenic ammonium ions studied, indicating a significant structural contribution.

Notizen: The crystal structures of four anion cryptates [X- ⊂ BT-6H+] formed by the protonated macrobicyclic receptor BT-6H+ with F-, Cl-, Br- and N3- have been determined. They provide a homogeneous series of anion coordination patterns with the same ligand. The small F--ion is tetracoordinated, while Cl- and Br- are bound in an octahedron of H-bonds. The non-complementarity between these spherical anions and the ellipsoïdal cavity of BT-6H+ is reflected in ligand distortions. Structural complementarity is achieved for the linear triatomic substrate N3-, which is bound by two pyramidal arrays of three H-bonds, each interacting with a terminal N-atom of N3-. The formation constants of the complexes formed by BT-6H+ with a variety of anions (halides, N3-, NO3-, carboxylates, SO42-, HPO42-, AMP2-, ADP3-, ATP4-, P2O74-) have been determined. Very strong complexations are found, as well as marked electrostatic and structural effects on stability and selectivity; in particular the binding of F-, Cl-, Br-, and N3- may be analyzed in terms of the crystal structure data. The cryptand BT-6H+ is a molecular receptor containing an ellipsoïdal recognition site for linear triatomic substrates of size compatible with the size of the molecular cacity. Further developments of various aspects of anion coordination chemistry are considered.

Notizen: Molecular catalysis of ATP-hydrolysis by a number of protonated macrocyclic polyamines 1-9 has been investigated by 31P-NMR spectroscopy, and marked rate enhancements have been obtained. The largest acceleration is produced by the [24]-N6O2 macrocycle 1, and the process displays the following properties: 1. protonated 1 forms very stable complexes with ATP, as well as with ADP and AMP; 2. it enhances the rate of ATP-hydrolysis by a factor of 103 at pH = 8.5; the rate of hydrolysis is constant over a wide pH-range, from pH = 2.5 to 8.5; 3. 1 is more efficient than acyclic analogues; 4. the products of the reaction are orthophosphate (OP) and ADP, which is subsequently hydrolyzed to OP and AMP at a slower rate; 5. at pH 〉 6.5, a transient species is detected, which is tentatively identified as a phosphoramidate intermediate, resulting from phosphorylation of the macrocycle 1; 6. the reaction presents first-order kinetics and is catalytic. The mechanism of the process is discussed in terms of initial formation of a complex between ATP and protonated 1, followed by an intracomplex reaction which may involve a combination of nucleophilic or acid catalysis with electrostatic catalysis.
