    Notes: The polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) initiated by SOCl2 in benzene and nitrobenzene solvents was studied at 32°C. Rp is first order with respect to SOCl2 concentration and also to NVC concentration up to a certain NVC concentration, after which it falls. Rate and the molecular weight increase with increasing dielectric constant of the medium. The rate and molecular weight are depressed by the addition of amines, thiophene, and water. The degree of polymerization is independent of SOCl2 and NVC concentration. A conventional cationic mechanism has been suggested, and a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed in conformity with the findings.

    Notes: The polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) initiated by PhMgBr in benzene was studied at 32°C. Rp is second order with respect to PhMgBr concentration but increases with NVC concentration (up to 0.06 M) and falls thereafter. Rp and Pn are depressed by the addition of thiophene and water. Modifiers such as benzaldehyde, butanone, and ethylene glycol practically inhibit the polymerization. Carbon tetrachloride and carbon dioxide, when passed through the NVC solution first, enhance the Rp and Pn increases with increasing PhMgBr and NVC concentrations, respectively. Rp increases with temperature, but Pn shows a maxium at a certain temperature. A cationic mechanism has been proposed where the polymerization is initiated by RMg+ cations produced from the ionization of PhMgBr by the Ashby and Smith mechanism.

    Notes: A new polymeric azodye has been synthesized from carbazole by diazotization of its derivative N-methylcarbazole-3,6-diamine and subsequent coupling reaction with 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl-3-sulfonate-Na)-propane prepared from bisphenol-A.     Notes: Copper(II)-exchanged-13X molecular sieves, prepared from four copper(II) salts, namely, sulfate, nitrate, chloride, and acetate, and their activities in the polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole at a fixed copper ion exchange level were studied. From the kinetic characteristics of polymerization it was established that the variation in activities of the Cu-exchanged sieves is due primarily to the difference in the pH of the original salt solution, which is responsible for the varying degree of proton exchange with the zeolite during copper ion exchange. A first-order dependence of the rate of polymerization was observed with respect to H+ ion concentration of the original copper-salt solution. It was further established that the rate of polymerization of exchanged copper ion, at a hypothetical zero proton concentration, is low. A mechanism of polymerization of NVC on copper-exchanged-13X zeolite was suggested on the basis of the results obtained.

    Notes: A few redox systems containing thiourea as reductant have been found to be quite effective in initiating vinyl polymerization in aqueous media and polymers obtained in the process have all been found to contain amino endgroups to various extents by the application of dye techniques. Quite a few oxidants have so far been utilized for this purpose; among them are ferric chloride (Fe3+), ethylene dibiguanide complex salts of tripositive silver (Ag3+), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), persulfate (S2O82-), bromate (BrO3-) + hydrochloric acid (HCl). In case of oxidants Fe3+ and Ag3+, amino endgroups are mainly incorporated in polymers; but in case of oxidants H2O2 and S2O82-, fragments of oxidants are also incorporated as hydroxyl and sulfate endgroups. BrO3-, however, forms a very efficient redox-initiating system with thiourea, as is evidenced by its capability of polymerizing even hydroquinone-stabilized water-soluble vinyl monomers at very low temperature (∼0°C.) and at a quite rapid rate. Besides amino endgroups, sulfonate endgroups have also been detected in polymers in this case, and the relative extents of these two types of endgroups depend generally on the acid concentration of the system. Evidences so far collected indicate the generation of S—C(=NH)NH2 radicals in the system by oxidation of isothiourea, HS—C(=NH)NH2, and these are incorporated in polymers as endgroups. Sulfonate endgroups may be generated by oxidation of these amino-bearing endgroups. Suitable initiation mechanisms have been suggested in each case.
