Notes: Conclusions 1. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate, inhibited by NO, was investigated. The weak inhibiting action of NO is due to an interaction between the monomer and inhibitor, leading to the formation of a nitronitroso derivative of methyl methacrylate. The latter was isolated and identified. 2. An analogous effect of deactivation of inhibitors in the interaction with the monomer is also observed in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of alkyl nitrites as a result of the formation of an alkyl nitrite-methyl methacrylate molecular complex.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The influence of the alkali metals Na, K, Rb, and Cs on the catalytic properties of the system V2O5−TiO2 has been studied in the oxidation of o-xylene. When introducing the promoter into the catalyst, and as the alkaline nature of the metals increases, the initial selectivity to partial oxidation products increases. A correlation is observed between the selectivity and the acidity of the surface, which was determined in a model raction of cumene cracking. The most acidic sites of the surface are assumed to be responsible for the destructive oxidation of o-xylene. The rate of oxidation of phthalic anhydride remaines constant when the nature of the additive varied.

Notes: Conclusions The authors investigate the coagulating action of a uniform electric field on chamotteclay suspensions. There is found to be an optimum value of the electric field strength as the important technological parameter determining the loss of aggregate stability of the suspension. Two-stage electrical treatment changes dilute suspensions to concentrated ones with moisture contents of up to 38.3%.

Notes: Conclusions The deposits in the study are multicomponent polydispersed suspensions characterized by a solid-phase concentration of 3.79–17.7% density 1–1.09 g/cm3, and a pH of 8.2–11.9. When the deposits are left to stand for 10 days they become compacted up to 40–70% of the original volume. The size of the aggregates of the dispersed phase change from 5 to 50 μm with a predominant particle size of 5 to 20 μm (64–79%). The electrokinetic potential of the phase is from −1.5 to −12.8 mV for various batches of deposits. The dispersion medium of the deposits is characterized by a pH of 8–11.5; a density of 1 g/cm3; viscosity of 0.001 Pa·sec; an electrical resistivity of 7.8·10−4 to 44·10−4Ω−1·cm−1; and a concentration of dry residue up to 1490 mg/liter. The dispersed phase of the deposits has a density of 2.16–2.52 g/cm3 and consists mainly of oxides of silicon, aluminum, calcium and a very small amount of oxides of titanium, iron, magnesium, and manganese. The addition of polyacrylamide to the original deposits in amounts of 25 to 400 mg/liter leads to a reduction in the electrokinetic potential of the particles, to their aggregation, and to spatial structure-formation. With the addition of polyacrylamide in amounts of 100–250 mg/liter to the deposits, the size of the aggregates decreases 15–30-fold by comparison with the untreated. The addition of PAA does not significantly affect the chemical composition of the dispersed phase. The data in this paper have been used to plan the cleansing equipment at the Zaporozhe Refractory Plant.

Notes: Conclusions The coagulating action of aluminum sulfate and of the combination of it with polyacrylamide on a suspension of chamotte and clay, leading to a significant increase in particle size of the dispersed phase, was investigated. The presence of a threshold value of the addition of coagulant as an important production parameter determining the unstable suspension type sedimentation of particles was shown. To disturb the stability of the systems and to accelerate the clarification process of waste waters contaminated with chamotte and clay the necessary additions of reagents are 25–50 mg/liter of aluminum sulfate and 5 mg/liter of polyacrylamide.

Notes: Conclusions Effluent containing clay and chamotte can be treated satisfactorily in a clarifier with a suspended layer of sediment. The content of suspended matter in the clarified effluent does not exceed 13 mg/liter. The flow velocity in the suspended layer and the concentration of the layer do not vary with the original concentration (within the investigated limits) of the solid phase in the effluent but depend on the height of the suspended layer and the physicochemical properties of the suspension. The sediment produced in the clarification of the effluent is readily dehydrated. The stay time of the sediment in the installation upstream from the dehydration equipment should riot exceed 15 min.

Notes: Conclusions The residue dehydration process depends upon the properties of the residues and the form of treatment of them. The optimum residue filtration conditions under vacuum are vacuum 0.067 MPa, length of filtration 2 min, and the use of belting fabric. The productivity of the vacuum filter is from 48.8 to 91.8 kg/(m2·h) and the moisture content of the residue is reduced from 82.3–86.5 to 59.3−58.1%.
