Notes: Summary A field experiment was conducted on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley in California to determine water use, crop growth, yield and water use efficiency of Acala (SJ-2) cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in 0.5 m spaced rows on a Panoche clay loam soil (Typic Torriorthents). Evapotranspiration was determined by water balance techniques utilizing neutron soil moisture measurements. All neutron measurements were made within a 3 m soil profile in 0.20 m increments. The measured evapotranspiration was compared to climatic estimates of potential evapotranspiration, and to calculations using a one-dimensional soil water balance model that separately computed soil water evaporation and plant transpiration. Crop growth was determined by weekly destructive plant sampling. Leaf area was determined along with dry matter components of leaves, stems, fruiting parts (flowers and squares) and bolls. Final yield was determined by machine harvesting (brush stripper) 720 m2 from each plot. Lint yields and fiber quality were determined by sample ginning and fiber analysis at the U.S. Cotton Research Station at Shafter, California. Three irrigation regimes were established that resulted in an evapotranspiration range from a high deficit condition to full irrigation at the calculated atmospheric demand. The measured evapotranspiration of narrow row cotton under a full irrigation regime was 778 mm, 594 mm under a limited irrigation regime and 441 mm under a regime with no post-plant irrigation. The evapotranspiration from these irrigation treatments was accurately simulated by a water balance model. that used inputs of potential evapotranspiration, leaf area index, soil water holding capacity and root development. The average lint yield from narrow row cotton with a full irrigation regime was 1583 kg/ha, the average lint yield from a limited irrigation regime was 1423 kg/ha and the average lint yield from a treatment with no postplant irrigation (fully recharged soil profile at planting) was 601 kg/ha. The full irrigation regime resulted in a dry matter production of approximately 16 t/ha while the limited irrigated regime produce 11 t/ha and the no-postplant irrigation regime produced 7 t/ha of dry matter. The fiber quality results indicated significant (0.05 level) differences only in 50% span length and micronaire, with the 2.5% span length, uniformity index, elongation and strength indicating no difference. Cotton lint yield was found to be directly related to total evapotranspiration although the relationship was slightly non-linear while dry matter yield was found to be linearly related to evapotranspiration. Both lint and dry matter yield were found to have a linear relationship to estimated transpiration from the water balance model calculations.

Notes: Summary The distribution and morphological aspects of the serotonin-containing neurons in the paraventricular organ of the carp, frog, turtle and chicken were studied by means of an immunoperoxidase technique using serotonin antiserum. In all species the serotonin-containing neurons were seen to have the appearance of the CSF-contacting neurons and to be distributed in the pars ependymalis and the pars hypendymalis of the organ. Particularly, in the frog, the serotonin-containing CSF-contacting neurons, mostly bipolar in shape, were also observed in the pars distalis. Their proximal processes protruded into the ventricular lumen through the ependymal layer with a globular- and triangular-shape. The distal processes projected ependymofugally to the pars distalis and formed a fine plexus in the neuropil of this part. The density of the serotonin fibers in the pars distalis was greater in the carp than in the other species.

Notes: Summary A newly modified and improved immunohistochemical method was devised for the demonstration of the serotonin neuron system in the central nervous system of the rabbit using serotonin antibody obtained by the immunization of rabbits, i.e., the biotinylation of serotonin antibodies, and the application of the two-step avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method. Using this technique, high background staining and nonspecific reactions were avoided, and extremely clear preparations were produced. The serotonin neurons of rabbit brain, which have a Golgi-like appearance, were followed to the fine terminals. This technique were also applied for electron microscopy, and satisfactory results concerning the submicroscopical distribution of serotonin were obtained.

Notes: Summary The direct innervation of the pial blood vessels by serotonin neurons has been demonstrated with a modified peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique in the mammalian central nervous system. The pia mater covering the ventrolateral surface of the medulla oblongata is innervated by numerous varicose serotonin fibers originating from the serotonin neurons of the lower brainstem. Scattered serotonin fibers were observed in the pia mater in every part of the brain and spinal cord.

Notes: Summary A new double immunohistochemical technique for the simultaneous detection of B-cells and T-cells was investigated, using tissue preparations obtained from human axillary lymph nodes and rejected renal allografts. The specimens were immunostained first for the demonstration of B-cells, by the immunogold-silver staining (IGSS) method using Leu-12 monoclonal antibody, and then for T-cells by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method using Leu-1 monoclonal antibody. With the present methods, both B-cells and T-cells were clearly detected and distinctively identified without cross-linking of antibodies or double reaction of enzymes.

Notes: Abstract Antisera were prepared against homogeneous serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) of an obligate methylotroph, Hyphomicrobium methylovorum GM2. Cell-free extracts of methylotrophic and non-methylotrophic microorganisms, rat and rabbit liver, which showed SHMT activities, were tested for immunological corss-reactivity with the anti-H. methylovorum GM2-SHMT. The extracts of only six methylotrophic strains showed reactivities These bacterial strains were all found to belong to the genus Hyphomicrobium on the basis of electron microscopy and C1-compound utilization. The cross-reaction test using the anti-H. methylovorum GM2-SHMT was also applied to various Hyphomicrobium strains. With the exception of H. neptunium, which has previously been recommended to be transferred to another genus, cell-free extracts of all the strains formed precipitin lines; some of them fused and the other spurred with each other. Thus, it was concluded that SHMT enzymes of methylotrophic Hyphomicrobium strains are immunologically related closely to each other and that the SHMT of H. methylovorum is an antigen specific for the genus Hyphomicrobium.

Notes: Abstract Gold particles containing plasma-polymerized styrene film were formed simultaneously by plasma polymerization and evaporation using an inductively coupled argon gas flow type reactor. Gold was used as the evaporated metal and styrene as the monomer. The plasma etching characteristics of the film were evaluated by O2 and CO2 plasmas using a reactor with parallel-plate electrodes. A structure of lines and spaces of 4μm width was successfully fabricated in the film on Si wafer by CO2 plasma etching through a mask pattern of plasma-polymerized resist. A self-developed pattern was obtained through the X-ray mask with polyimide substrate by synchrotron radiation. The molecular structure and atomic composition of the film were investigated by ESCA and TEM.

Notes: Abstract The effects of dopant addition on sintering, electrical conductivity, fracture strength, and corrosion resistance of polycrystalline calcium titanate have been investigated for a wide list of potential substitutional dopants. Significant improvements of electrical conductivity at room temperature and corrosion resistance in molten KOH at 450° C have been observed in the polycrystalline calcium titanate specimens doped with tantalum and niobium and cerium and chromium, respectively. These results are in comparison to pure, reduced material. On the other hand, no appreciable effect of dopant addition has been observed on sinterability and fracture strength of the polycrystalline calcium titanate.

Notes: Abstract The gyromagnetic ratios of the 4 1 + , 6 1 + , and 2 2 + states in186W were measured relative to that of the 2 1 + level by means of the transient field implantation perturbedγ-ray angular distribution technique. The nuclei in the states of interest were Coulomb excited using a beam of 220-MeV63Cu projectiles and recoiled swiftly through a thin, polarized Fe foil. The present measurements yielded ratiosg(4 1 + )/g(2 1 + )=1.04±0.07,g(6 1 + )/g(2 1 + )=1.03 ±0.20 andg(2 2 + )/g(2 1 + )=0.63±0.13. The sizable disparity between the measuredg-factors of the ground- and excited-band is examined within the context of the interacting boson approximation model.
