In:  Supplement to: Castillo, Paterno R; Batiza, Rodey; Stern, Robert J (1986): Petrology and geochemistry of Nauru Basin igneous complex: Large-volume, off-ridge eruptions of MORB-like basalt during the Cretaceous. In: Moberly, R; Schlanger, SO; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Washington (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 89, 555-576, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.89.122.1986

Beschreibung: The 16 samples of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 89 basalts that we analyzed for whole rock major and trace elements and for mineralogic compositions are identical to some of the basalts recovered during Leg 61. Leg 89 samples are mostly olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxene sparsely phyric basalts and exhibit a wide variety of textures. These basalts have lower TiO2 at a given Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)*100 than MORB (midocean ridge basalt). We recognize three major chemical types of basalts in the Nauru Basin. We believe that different degrees of partial melting, modified by fractional crystallization and possibly by magma mixing at shallow depths, can explain the chemical differences among the three groups. This petrogenetic model is consistent with the observed downhole chemical-chronostratigraphic relations of the samples. New 87Sr/86Sr and U3Nd/144Nd analyses of basalt samples from DSDP Site 462 indicate that the Nauru Basin igneous complex is within the Sr-Nd isotopic range of ocean island basalt. Thus the Nauru Basin igneous complex resembles MORB in many aspects of its chemistry, morphology, and secondary alteration patterns (Larson, Schlanger, et al., 1981), but not in its isotopic characteristics. If it were not for the unambiguous evidence that the Nauru Basin complex was erupted off-ridge, the complex could easily be interpreted as normal oceanic layer 2. For this reason, we speculate that the Nauru Basin igneous complex was produced in an oceanic riftlike environment when multiple, fast-propagating rifts were formed during the fast seafloor spreading episode in the Cretaceous.

Beschreibung: During R/V T. Thompson cruise TT-192 around the the Mariana and Volcano Volcanic Arcs 60% of the dredge recoveries contained ferromanganese deposits. Substrate rocks consisted of intermediate to mafic volcanic rocks, volcaniclastic rocks, volcanic breccia, and minor limestone. Volcaniclastic rocks were dominantly sandstone but ranged from mudstone to conglomerate. Ferromanganese deposits occur in five ways: Yellow-brown to black ferromanganese encrustations on rocks; brown, grey, and black ferromanganese oxides cementing volcaniclastic sandstone; stratiform, stratabound Mn oxide rich layers that are pale to dark grey, rarely brownish-grey, with a submetallic luster; cobbles of dark grey submetallic, irregularly shaped masses of manganese (Mn nodules ?) and weatehered black cobbles rich in magnetite. A selection of these deposits was chemically analysed including major and minor elements, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements. The chemistry determination was done by Induction Coupled Plasma analyses done by J. G. Crock, and K. Kennedy at the U.S. Geological Survey laboratories in Reston, Denver and Menlo Park respectively. Water and CO2 determinations were done by wet chemical techniques.

Notizen: Late Miocene (7–9 Ma) basaltic rocks from the Monbetsu-Kamishihoro graben in northeast Hokkaido have chemical affinities to certain back-arc basin basalts (referred to herein as Hokkaido BABB). Pb-, Nd- and Sr-isotopic compositions of the Hokkaido BABB and arc-type volcanic rocks (11–13 Ma and 4–4.5 Ma) from the nearby region indicate mixing between the depleted mantle and an EM II-like enriched component (e.g. subducted pelagic sediment) in the magma generation. At a given 87Sr/86Sr, Hokkaido BABB have slightly lower 143Nd/144Nd and slightly less radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb compared with associated arc-type lavas, but both these suites are difficult to distinguish solely on the basis of isotopic compositions. These isotopic data indicate that while generation of the Hokkaido BABB involves smaller amounts of the EM II-like enriched component than do associated arc lavas, Hokkaido BABB are isotopically distinct from basalts produced at normal back-arc basin spreading centers. Instead, northeast Hokkaido BABB are more similar to basalts erupted during the initial rifting stage of back-arc basins. The Monbetsu-Kamishihoro graben may have developed in association with extension that formed the Kurile Basin, suggesting that opening of the basin continued until late Miocene (7–9 Ma).
