Beschreibung: High performance CCD imagers with 800 x 50 resolution elements were fabricated using a coplanar, double polysilicon, electrode system. The imager was developed as a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of an 800 x 800 array for application to deep space photography where data rates of 10K to the 2nd power and operating temperatures of -40 C are required. The performance is discussed and comparisons made to the existing 400 x 400 imager.

Beschreibung: Results from an intercomparison of techniques to measure tropospheric levels of carbon monoxide (CO) are discussed. The intercomparison was conducted as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Global Tropospheric Experiment (GTE) and was held at Wallops Island, VA, in July 1983. Instruments intercompared included a laser differential absorption method and three grab sample/gas chromatograph methods. The intercomparison consisted of simultaneous measurements of ambient levels of CO and controlled injections of CO from a common manifold. Results from the techniques exhibited a high degree of correlation among themselves and with changes in the CO mixing ratio. The results suggested a level of agreement among the techniques of about 15 percent. However, a day-to-day bias between the techniques was observed, which resulted in differences between techniques as large as 38 percent.

Beschreibung: A liquid helium cooled infrared telescope (IRT) was to be flown in July 1985 on Spacelab 2. The instrument is designed to measure both diffuse and discrete infrared astronomical sources, including the zodiacal light, galactic, and extragalactic components, as well as to evaluate the induced Orbiter environment. The focal plane contains ten photoconductive detectors covering six broad bands from 2 to 120 microns. Each detector has a 0.5 by 1.0 deg field of view optimized for detection of extended sources of IR radiation. Except for the 2 micron detector, the system noise is limited by the sky background noise. The measurements planned for the IRT use the 1 meter base of the Plasma Diagnostic Package (PDP), an already existing SL 2 experiment, as the glow generating surface. The measurements are repeated changing the position of the PDP, the attitude of the Orbiter, and the ram direction in an effort to remove both the thermal component of the PDP emission and the cosmic background radiation.

Beschreibung: Thinned, backside-illuminated, p-channel CCD images are under development which can exploit the surface potential in VUV applications, yielding enhanced quantum efficiency to wavelengths as short as 1100 A. The current goal is production of large-format, 5-micron pixel imagers for spectrographic and imaging VUV spaceflight experiments. Model predictions of the effect of device design on quantum efficiency, well capacity, and crosstalk are presented for such 5-micron-approaching pixel sizes.

Beschreibung: A high-efficiency, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging spectrometer has been constructed and tested. The spectrometer employs a concave toroidal grating illuminated at normal incidence in a Rowland circle mounting and has only one reflecting surface. The toroidal grating has been fabricated by a new technique employing an elastically deformable submaster grating which is replicated in a spherical form and then mechanically distorted to produce the desired aspect ratio of the toroidal surface for stigmatic imaging over the selected wavelength range. The fixed toroidal grating used in the spectrometer is then replicated from this surface. Photographic tests and initial photoelectric tests with a two-dimensional, pulse-counting detector system have verified the image quality of the toroidal grating at wavelengths near 600 A. The basic designs of two instruments employing the spectrometer for astrophysical investigations in space are described, namely, a high-resolution EUV spectroheliometer for studies of the solar chromosphere, transition region, and corona; and an EUV spectroscopic telescope for studies of nonsolar objects.

Beschreibung: An experimental study was undertaken to examine the feasibility of using ion-implanted filaments doped with either an alkali metal or noble gas for in situ recalibration of onboard mass spectrometers during extended space missions. Implants of rubidium and krypton in rhenium ribbon filaments were subsequently tested in a bakeable 60 deg sector mass spectrometer operating in the static mode. Surface ionization and electron impact ion sources were both used, each yielding satisfactory results. The metallic implant with subsequent ionization provided a means of mass scale calibration and determination of system operating parameters, whereas the noble gas thermally desorbed into the system was more suited for partial pressure and sensitivity determinations.

Beschreibung: In 1968, Dicke had suggested that multiple-pinhole camera systems would have significant advantages concerning the SNR in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy if the multiple images could be somehow synthesized into a single image. The practical development of an image-synthesis method based on these suggestions is discussed. A formulation of the SNR gain theory which is particularly suited for dealing with the proposal by Dicke is considered. It is found that the SNR gain is by no means uniform in all X-ray astronomy applications.
