    Beschreibung: A study, made to calibrate the ultraviolet spectra of stars to within an absolute accuracy of 10%, is summarized. Data were taken by a 13 inch UVR telescope onboard several rocket flights. Calibrated and existing ground based data are in reasonable agreement. Calibrated results are presented in graphical form.

    Beschreibung: A report on the initial performance of the IUE satellite, launched in January, 1978, is given. Attention is given to optical performance, camera performance, background corrections, photometric performance, and data reduction. Samples of high-dispersion and low-dispersion spectra are shown. A remaining problem of proper separation of high dispersion orders in data reduction is discussed.

    Beschreibung: During the scientific commissioning phase of IUE several spectra were acquired from objects residing in the Solar System. The activities focused on testing numerous parameters which would indicate the usefulness of IUE for planetary science. It seems that IUE can successfully tackle many important questions and the data analysis and interpretation of the initial set of observations has begun.

    Beschreibung: Spectral observations of the stars Alpha Canis Majoris, Gamma Orionis, Kappa Orionis and Alpha Leonis have been obtained in the range 1150-4000 A, using rocket borne spectrometers. The payloads have a 13-inch diameter telescope, a rotatable concave diffraction grating, and three pulse counting photomultiplier photometers. The observations are systematically lower than those of Carruthers (1968) at 1270 A, of Smith (1967) at 1376 A, and of Campbell (1970) at 2150 and 2550 A. The data are also about 15 percent lower than the ground-based photometry reported by Schild, Peterson and Oke (1971). The OAO-2 short wavelength scanner calibration agrees with the alpha Leo observations, but disagrees for Kappa Ori and Gamma Ori.

    Beschreibung: The stray light performance of NASA's Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) has been calculated using the APART/PADE code. That code has been upgraded to handle off-axis optical systems such as DIRBE. Under observing conditions, sunlight is attenuated by 21 to 29 orders-of-magnitude; uniform diffuse illumination, by 6 to 9 orders of magnitude. The sunlight is attenuated by multiple diffraction at an external sun shield and by a forebaffle at the entrance to the DIRBE. Stray light is nearly a linear function of the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of the primary mirror at all wavelengths - or it can be made to be so by reducing the size of the field defining stop from 0.866 to 0.7 degrees square. For uniform diffuse illumination, half of the stray radiation comes from within 5 degrees of the center of the field-of-view. Particulate contamination of the primary mirror is expected to be a problem and special polishing and cleaning procedures are recommended - before mirror overcoating and again before flight.
