Beschreibung: Being situated in the immediate vicinity of the 1999 Chichi earthquake epicenter, 178 automatic-recording monitoring wells of the Choshui fan-delta provided a very valuable data set for testing whether the coseismic water-level changes in confined aquifers can be explained as a poroelastic response of well-aquifer systems to coseismic volumetric strain. This study demonstrates that the polarities of the observed coseismic water-level and river discharge changes are in good agreement with those of the static volumetric strain calculated by a dislocation model, using the well-constrained rupture model of the seismogenic Chelungpu fault. The puzzling "bull-eye" patterns formed by the equipotential lines of the coseismic water-level changes in the confined aquifers in the middle parts of the fan-delta represent pressure enhancement due to their being situated at the pinch-out ends of conglomeratic layers.

Beschreibung: The light-induced difference Fourier transform infrared spectrum between the L or N intermediate minus light-adapted bacteriorhodopsin (BR) was measured in order to examine the protonated states and the changes in the interactions of carboxylic acids of Asp-96 and Asp-115 in these intermediates. Vibrational bands due to the protonated and unprotonated carboxylic acid were identified by isotope shift and band depletion upon substitution of Asp-96 or -115 by asparagine. While the signal due to the deprotonation of Asp-96 was clearly observed in the N intermediate, this residue remained protonated in L. Asp-115 was partially deprotonated in L. The C = O stretching vibration of protonated Asp-96 of L showed almost no shift upon 2H2O substitution, in contrast to the corresponding band of Asp-96 or Asp-115 of BR, which shifted by 9-12 cm-1 under the same conditions. In the model system of acetic acid in organic solvents, such an absence of the shift of the C = O stretching vibration of the protonated carboxylic acid upon 2H2O substitution was seen only when the O-H of acetic acid is hydrogen-bonded. The non-hydrogen-bonded monomer showed the 2H2O-dependent shift. Thus, the O-H bond of Asp-96 enters into hydrogen bonding upon conversion of BR to L. Its increased hydrogen bonding in L is consistent with the observed downshift of the O-H stretching vibration of the carboxylic acid of Asp-96.

Beschreibung: The paper presents new information on the durability of a CATCOM catalyst operating at low-emission combustion temperatures (about 1527 K) with a liquid fuel, No. 2 diesel. Information on the activity of No. 2 diesel after 1000 hr of aging is given. In addition, a unique in situ activity test developed for monitoring the subtle changes in the catalyst activity of the CATCOM catalyst is also detailed. The study demonstrated the feasibility of using a CATCOM catalyst in catalytically supported thermal combustion for extended operating periods

Beschreibung: An analytical study of sound transmission into semicylindrical enclosures through discretely stiffened curved elastic panels is presented. The transmitted sound is estimated by solving the acoustic wave equation for the interior acoustic field, a Galerkin-like method being used. This solution is then coupled to the vibration of the stiffened panels. The response characteristics of these panels are determined by using a modal analysis where the modes are obtained by the finite element-strip method. Numerical results include spectra of the interior sound pressure due to white noise, turbulent boundary layer and propeller noise inputs.

Beschreibung: Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) technology has emerged as one of the most promising technologies for ultrahigh-speed integrated circuits. HBT circuits for digital and analog applications, data conversion, and power amplification have been realized, with speed performance well above 20 GHz. At Rockwell, a baseline AlGaAs/GaAs HBT technology has been established in a manufacturing facility. This paper describes the HBT technology, transistor characteristics, and HBT circuits for data acquisition and communication.

Beschreibung: Background material and a systems analysis of a multifrequency aperture - synthesizing microwave radiometer system is presented. It was found that the system does not exhibit high performance because much of the available thermal power is not used in the construction of the image and because the image that can be formed has a resolution of only ten lines. An analysis of image reconstruction is given. The system is compared with conventional aperture synthesis systems.
